Every 5 minutes I experience slowdown in Mass Effect 2 for about 10-15 seconds, then it wears of untill the next timed slowdown.

I have no idea what is causing this, I am using Direct X 9, with an nVidia 8800GTX with the latest drivers.
My operating system is Windows XP Professional 32 bit.

I am running the game off of Steam .

There is no issue in Mass Effect 1 so its not PC slowdown, its only in Mass Effect 2. I had this problem before and I fixed it with a system restore because I had suspicions that a program was causing it, but now i haven't installed that program and the issue has resurfaced and this time I have no idea why. I can't do a system restore now because I don't know when to restore it to and I'd lose too much data anyway. I need a solution to this problem it's driving me crazy, Mass Effect 2 is approaching unplayable for me.

sounds like you have something running in the background which is pulling system resources. You said you were running it off Steam, is steam attempting to download and install patches for other Steam games you have?

Well no its not, the only other Steam game I have is Mass Effect 1, and it's fully up to date. I don't think that is the problem nothing is being downloaded. The slowdown is on a schedule, every 5 or so minutes it slows down for about 15 seconds, its like it happens at specific intervals.

Does it happen at exactly the same spots in the game?

No, it happens anywhere at specific intervals. No matter where I am it will occur after a set amount of time. Every 5 minutes, no matter where I'm at it occurs right on schedule.

Sounds like it is a problem with your system running ME2, drop the resolution and settings to see if that makes a difference.

I had something similar like that happen to me. Turned out it was my graphics card.

The game kept lagging. Even after I exited the game, it seemed like something sucked the life right out of the computer.

Nope my system is fully capable of running the game I have an 8800GTX card and an Intel E6600 Dual Core Processor. I can run the game at max settings easily. But I tried lowering the resolution and settings, but the slowdown still came right on schedule as it always does.<_<

Defrag your hard drive and increase the swap file size.

If you can, also try swapping out your video card. It feels to me as if its a video card problem.

I defraged the hard drive and increased the swap file size, it only made it worse as far as I can tell. The lag is much more prevalent now instead of just being controlled outbursts.

I have no idea what is causing this my computer can easily run the game but its lagging like freaking crazy for no damn reason, Mass Effect 2 is the only one doing it it makes no sense.

I can't take this anymore, it is ruining the immersion for me. I'm going to try reinstalling the game.

Reinstalling didn't work...

I think I've come up with the only logical conclusion to what is causing this. Harbinger must be ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL of my PC. No other reason seems to be any more valid.

This is getting really tiresome...

Open up Task Manager. Set explorer process priority to Above Normal or High and Affinity to just one core.

As soon as you start the game, minimize it and set Mass Effect process priority same as explorer, but leave affinity as is.

If the problem is too deep under the hood of system, won't help much.

There are certain third party applications, that run in the background, and have memory leak issues that chew up alot of systems resources. Use msconfig to disable everything except what you need to make the operating system work. But leave your graphics platform enabled (with ATI its the Catalyst Control Centre, dunno what nVidia call theirs).

Try running disk check. Google for more info on chkdsk or just "disk check Windows XP". Make sure you read it all and follow the necessary restarts.

It only happens in Mass Effect 2, and yes I tried disk checking along with defraging.

It's still alive and kicking.

This is a perplexing one. Since you are running it iff Steam, try starting Steam in offluine mode before you play the game.

If you can, try swapping your nVidia card out for an ATI one, alot of nVidia users seem to be having troubles lately, and not just with this game.

Perhaps your OS hits a brick wall built by itself. Try using restore again. Can't say XP is the most reliable OS in this respect. As far as I remember, it really likes to crap out when it gets too full of itself. That software could have just accelerated the process.

I have an older nVidia model, the 8800 series came out several years ago, so I don't think its succeptable to the recent problems nVidia users are having. I would like to get one of the new ATI Radeon HD 6000 cards, I've heard they are complete pwnage. Unfortunately I don't have the money for such an upgrade.

As far as system restore goes, it's not an option because I no longer have a restore point that goes back before this issue resurfaced, and it's not an option anyway because I've created far too much new data since then that I can't afford to lose.

Ugh damn you Harbinger.

I'm really hoping that my eventual upgrade to Windows 7 fixes this, it's my forlorn hope that might actually have a shot at working. In fact, I strongly think it will fix it, so I may not be screwed after all, just gotta keep saving up money for that upgrade. Almost there, I'll let you guys know.

But keep up with the possible solutions, until then this thing is still here causing me grief.

At least I finally beat Mass Effect 2, so I'm not playing it every day now. But the problem is still there and I want it (ahem *does best Arnie voice) terminated. ASAP.

I'm running ME2 under XP64 on an ATI HD4870 video card. If it is your video card I dont think upgrading your OS will help much.

Do you have a friend with an ATI card they would let you borrow for a few hours?

Upgrading from XP to 7 has potential to help a lot. After all, the driver models and resource management are like day and night.

Sorry I kinda forgot about this topic, but yeah it's just getting worse and worse, the slowdown is no longer isolated in Mass Effect 2, now Mass Effect 1 is getting it too. I'm guessing it's a problem with my graphics card like you guys said, I guess I'll just have to deal with it till I can afford to upgrade my PC.
