I installed a physical disc version of Mass Effect 2 along with all Cerberus network DLC, Kasumi's Stolen Memory, and Shadow Broker's Lair on my Windows 7 64 bit (more detailed specs below) laptop.  Until a couple days ago, it worked almost flawlessly.  Sure, it crashed a time or two in the 40+ hours I had put into it, but that happens with most any game.  Recently, though, it's started crashing a lot more often often, seeming to barely go an hour without crashing.

There was no trigger to this that I could discern.  I did save a game just before a crash.  Part of me wonders if it might have saved in some unstable state, but that's as close to a start point as I can pin down.  I can't recall if that was the first crash in the series, however.  Nothing in my computer has changed that I can recall.  My copy of ME2 is completely unmodded.  The crashing first involved the game closing and a message informing me of the crash popping up.  The last few times the game froze completely, requiring me to ctrl+alt+del to get out of the frozen game.  System details follow.

MassEffect2.exe v1.02

Are you running any programs in the background while playing the game?

I frequently run Firefox in the background, but that's been true since I started playing and is not a recent change.

Earlier today I was playing through cutscene-heavy section when I realized the game hadn't crashed, and I'd been playing for a while. I started to worry it might crash during a cutscene, but when I stopped to consider it, I realized I couldn't remember it ever crashing during a cutscene. After some though, I realized the crashes I could clearly remember happened when I, while holding the pause button, manually clicked on a power to activate it. It didn't crash every time I did so, but keeping this in mind, I made sure to use quick keys for the rest of my session, and the game went without crashing, something it hadn't done for a long time. I don't know if this helps things or confuses things, but I thought it would be an important bit of information.

I will add my own experiences to this thread. I also installed Kasumi and Lair to my computer. Prior the installations the game was the most stable - last playthrough it didnt crash even once.

Certainly the issue can be Lair as well as we both have installed it at the same time.

Crashes seem to be linked to that pause menu somehow alright - the crash occurs just as I've commanded characters to do something through pause menu. I've been also thinking whether it has to do with the amount of opponents. The crash generally does occur in the larger, longer fights, but then there are moments such as Zaeed's personal quest open air -fight that crashed twice and the number of opponents is not particularly high in
that area, compared to the fights where crashes typically occurred(ie. fan room of Mordin quest, room before warden in Jack quest, Archangel quest finale..).

I would not want to remove the dlc as the char is great, but I may have to if the crashes become more frequent as it really eats if you're fighting a marathon battle and the game crashes (this added to the pattern that I have first died about thousand times because of my lack of skill and then when I'm finally doing great the game crashes :D ).

I haven't encountere any cutscene crashing. They always occur midfight.

My setup:
Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU Q8300 @ 2.50GHz
4GB RAM
NVIDIA
GeForce GT 220
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
DirectX 10.0

I do not understand why but the game became stabile again when I copied the Shadowbroker dlc folder and removed it from the program files and then started the game without it and attempted to load a savegame (which it of course doesn't allow) and then exit the game and placed the dlc folder back to its original place.. Since I did that I have had 1 crash only and I finished the game smoothly. Before I had at least 2 crashes per hour.

Strange but can't complain - it worked for me.

I am experiencing a fairly consistent problem of crashing during team selection before a mission. Usually I will eventually get through it and the mission gets completed, but after the "cure the plague" mission and before Archangel mission while selecting the team it crashes now every time. I tried loading the 1.02 patch, but that didn't change anything.

I running Win 7/64 bit, with 12gb of memory, I920 processor.

Wonder if 64bit windows is the reason even though most things run better under 64 bit than 32 bit.

Dont know why or how this made my game stop crashing but hats off to you Drained_Warrior_

After about 45 minutes of completing the last battle in Stolen Memory (only to have it crash on me after the mission summery) I did what you recommended.  On my next attempt it was smooth sailing.

Thank you for sharing this odd fix Image IPB
