I found that Neeska survivability went up like threefold once i used one of her feats to give her shield proficiency.
Confession: I have never played MotB

What's the point of a meleeing rogue if you're not gonna dualwield for insane sneak attacks though? I personally just have em use ranged weps since the AI loves to turn around and smash anything that comes up to flank them but very rarely disengages from melee to go chase an archer/caster no matter how close they are as long as they're not in melee range.

I also give Neeshka range weapons and the appropriate feats and she manages to get a good number of sneak attacks in and not take a lot of damage. About MoTB I agee w/ many other posts about going through the OC first. Your starting equipment is better and it just seems to make more sense..... for me.

No one said otherwise. The point is that you have to spend a lot of time playing the OC, but you'll play exactly the same game as if you don't. So if you want to play the OC because you enjoy it, cool, do it, but it won't change anything in MotB.
The starting equipment will be replaced very soon, and IIRC, you lose your weapon at the start of MotB.
And about Neeshka, it's been a long time since I played through the OC, but I don't recall having a lot of problems to keep her alive. Her usefulness is a different matter, but at least she was alive, with no need to micromanage her.

Lol, you do. When I loaded in a druid Safiya was all "I brought you weapons!" but I couldn't use any of them xD; So I had to run around without. The stance was actually pretty cool.
