How large is the writing crew for DA2?

I know that David Gaider is the one who is most mentioned and we have a pretty good idea of what he is like. Sometimes he is badass

but sometimes he is sad.

But is he the only writer for the Dragon Age games? Is there a crew given assignments, do particular people write particular NPCs (if Sten, Alistair and Zevran had the same writer I'd be surprised), and how much of the world/characters is purely creative and how much of a role does marketability play?

If anyone could shed some light on these questions that would be great. The process of writing a large RPG is something I'm fascinated by.

Gaider is not only the sole writer, he is responsible for the entire game!

..or so people seem to think.

The rest of the writing team is Sheryl Chee, Jennifer Hepler, Mary Kirby and Luke Kristjanson, and they had an intern, Tonia Laird.

As for characters in DAO:

Alistair, Morrigan, Zevran, Shale - David Gaider

Sten, Loghain, Dog - Mary Kirby

Oghren - Jay Turner/Sheryl Chee

Leliana, Wynne - Sheryl Chee

I wonder where that Sad Gaider picture was taken. It looks like Medieval Times or something.

I'm gonna guess a Bioware convention booth of some sort. What he's so sad about we may never know.

Edit; interesting that it's such a specific team. I wonder if there's a rivalry over which character is best received by fans etc

It's the DA:O booth at a con. 2007-2008, I think.

He doesn't look so much sad as sleepy.

I doubt it's rivalry so much as surprise and/or amusement.

And yeah that does look more like "end of the day at a con and my feet are killing me" than sad.

As for DA2 we know so far that: Mary is writing Varric, Sheryl is writing Isabela, and David is writing Cassandra. Unless I missed something re: Bethany/Carver/Aveline?

Good to see the writers getting some love, they seem to do above and beyond the call of duty around here sometimes and I for one have found coming here much more fun since I discovered they post now and then. Plus writing for games like this facinates me as well, so I'm always interested in finding out little tid bits of inside info here and there.

I might be wrong, but I think Luke was writing Aveline and Jennifer, Bethany.

I would so take it at least a bit personally if the fans didn't like my characters. How could you not, after putting so much effort into writing them and making them distinct?

And sorry but that picture is the epitome of sad. I haven't seen a dude sitting on a wall look that sad since Humpty
Dumpty.

I thought Luke was maybe writing Carver? I don't remember reading who was writing Aveline but I do recall hearing that Jennifer was writing Bethany.

I don't think it's a surprise that the two most popular characters are love interests that are important to the plot and created by the lead writer.

BioWare fans seem to fall into... patterns.

I only hope that Jennifer mind****s me again.

Interesting, thanks! Seems like more writers in the mix this time around? At least from a character perspective.

Yes, though they were both on the DAO staff too. AFAIK, Luke has worked on almost every Bioware game going all the way back to BG1.

I get the impression that they all collaberate and bounce ideas off each other rather than try to have the best character. I remember DG saying that he asked one of the others what to name Ander's cat and he went with the first suggestion he got. Another time he pointed out that when it comes to banters, regardless of who initially wrote it, it is ulitmately the responsiblity of the main writer to review the dialogue for the character they're in charge of and make sure it is "in character."

I do get a kick out of the idea of someone approaching Mary Kirby and saying, "So I thought I'd have the mabari howl during this scene, but does that fit his character? Would it be more of a gutteral growl instead? What do you think?" =p

Exactly. Just look at the party banter.
