So like uh... mages can just piss off...

There was a staff in the Quartermasters store that was worth roughly 125 gold. 25 Gold was the most I had ever collected. Urgh.
Also, if I hadn't actually bought the current staff I'm using, I'd still be using the silly Tier 3 staff I got when I left the Tower at the end of the Mage Origin :|
Now, magical longsowrds I find a few of, and I've found three or so magical daggers. Magical sets of armor I've also found a few of (though I admith the two best sets did come in the DLC).

before I became an AW though, I did find it hard to get good robes/hoods etc. eventually (after AW status), I came across some really nice robes which now morrigan and wynne use. good stats/resists/regen etc.
and yes, if you have to go with non-cloth .. light armor sets are the best way because as someone mentioned here, you can sometimes get -fatigue because of set status. which is nice if the armor has the right stats mages need.

It's all the aging console can handle. You expect it to act like modern hardware with modern shadows and controls when it's what, 4 years old now? A 4 year old computer couldn't play it very well either. Not like I like anyhow with everything maxed out and turned on to max at 1920x1080 or even higher... The 360 is old and honestly, junk. I haven't turned mine on for over a year now... all I did use it for before then even was just streaming netflix... For gaming other than some sports games, it's just not capable enough. You don't have the controls... Honestly, I couldn't imagine playing this on the 360... I need my countless hot keys and combinations. 12 little buttons (14 if you include start and select) just don't cut it. I have 10 just in the spellbar alone.
If it's all you got. Sure, but other than that, this should really be played on the PC. (and if you want to use your huge TV, any PC worth a darn can easily be plugged right in to them today...)

Agreed. Rogues were hard to equip, particularly dagger wielding rogues.
Also, what was with the piles and piles of medium armour? Chainmail (not heavy chain), splint, scale everywhere. Who wears that stuff?
This was really my only complaint about the game. A lot of the drops were crap. Push all the way through a thieves' guild, kill the boss, open the chest at the end and find a regular dagger... I can't count how many times I opened a chest and smacked my forehead. 'Woohoo! All that work for a lesser spirit balm!'
This is my pet peeve with every bioware game I've ever played. The one thing they don't, and never have had a handle on, is loot. The loot in all their games is lackluster, mundane, and sparse.
There is nothing more unsatisfying for a player, than to run through some huge gauntlet of mobs, defeat a tough boss, open a chest, and find some worthless piece of crud common gear.

I barely played NWN, and never played any other Bioware game after it until DA:O, but the Baldur's Gate series had some seriously awesome loot. Try fighting through Watcher's Keep and then tell me the loot wasn't good.

I'm not syaing we should go back to that, but damn did it ever make choosing between magical longswords hard!
On the subject as mage hats and robes - they are both as ugly as sin. The Tevinter style robes on my female char look alright (and I don't count the skimpy chainmail as "alright", that's a stereotype I avoid), but ... well, it's a bit ridiculous. Don't even get me started on the hats.
On the subject of loot - Planescape Tormet had awesome loot - I'm not even talking about some of the awesome physical loot that goes into your inventory (Modron Cube, anyone? Lady of Pain doll? So awesome! I personally loved the weird shaped diary thing), I'm talking about some of the stat increases that you get ... and, if I'm honest, I actually consider some of the plot revalations loot. I honestly found myself wanted to know the answers to the questions (Whatcan change the nature of a man?) as much as the game characters did, which I have never experienced before then.

The mage hats anyone? Hats? They're terrible. Awful. I don't want to wear them, but they have good effects - so I have morrigan, for example, in her standard 'robe' and a mage hat. It's ridiculous. Someone needs to make a mod to re-do those horrific items. A circlet, a cap, ANYTHING but those nun hats.
definitely a lack of variety as robes go but with the DAO lore I can somewhat understand it.. but the headgear is absolutely awful looking.. I hope they give you the option to hide headgear so you can at least get the stats without looking like an idiot.

I agree that the diversity of mage robes is slim ... almost non existant ... but ... hey, I'll live.

Ever notice there is a great deal of leather armor... and a great deal of heavy armor... etc etc?
My mage is still walking around in the boots she got right around the time she was in the tower. Same with the robe that she ripped off Wynn. There's almost no mage gear in the game. Like none... it's bizarre. Even in the mage tower... there's almost no gear for mages... wtf, yo?
Consider this: Being a mage is a VERY rare trait: Only 2 of the 3 known races can successfully wield its power; further to that a mage is known about quite early on in their childhood! Very quickly this mage-child will be confronted by the templars/chantry to be "imprisoned" and "trained" in the Circle of Magi or else be killed. He/She/It may try to escape to live as rogue mages that will likely turn into abominations through blood magic or improper use of magic tearing the fade. We also know that the Circle of Magi exsists in almost every nation thanks to many conversations and codexs (Zev has a lot to say on this matter haha) with the HQ of sorts being possibly the Tevinter.
So. In a SENSE THIS IS BEAUTIFUL for role playing purposes. OF COURSE Ferelden doesn't have a strip mall just for friggin mages! They are usually living in the circle or on a tight leash from the Templars. You do not simply see mages having a stroll in Denerim Market.
From first seeing the First Enchanter in his gear you should start to generally understand that this is the universal approved uniform of the Circle of Magi. It is just as much a safeguard for YOU from templars AND the public to know "what" you are!..the people of these times are very suspicious and afraid of magic, just as some were towards technology/computers when it first came out (certainly not to this degree but yeah..) Any "unique" looking robe is usually worn by a malificar[SP?] of sorts I.E: Reaper Vestment! Hell Even the THOUSAND year old keeper of a certain place wears the same garb as ALL mages of the circle which implies he too was originally a circle mage
This all makes me feel it re-enforces the whole notion of the clothes being more of a cattle brand then providing any real usefulness besides covering you up

DISAGREE DISAGREE.
I for one would not expect the super-rare-glammering-sexy-sword[armor]-of-epicness to be found in every single damn chest that I pick! Esp since this would be CRAP if they came from locked chests: why should I get punished for not bringing along a damn rogue?! Would it make sense for such great items to be attainable so readily and easily in the world of DA:O?? Why should I bother slaying dragons/darkspawn if I can have a rogue and open a few chests??
Again for the world of dragon age: there are LOOTERS/thieves/scammers that have come long before you. Most places are picked CLEAN. There are certain ancient and sealed off places that do give you damn great loot. I for one have accumulated well over 450G in my first playthrough from npcing this junk and buying the rarer equipment or forging them (wade). Infact wade gives you a great set of suprerior splintmail looking armor and if your AW it gives you great bonuses and a beautiful -7% fatigue to boot!
I have not played other bioware games at all but I do feel the scaling of gear is somewhat appropriate to the progression/difficulty level of the game. Yes yes we can nitpick here and there but we do because we love their creation in the end.
Although no mater what anyone could possibly say: The mage hats are terrible, a crime, for shame for shame
But yes, in general, they could have been more creative with the unique looking robes and possibly even the staves but there are development/budget issues obviously. More then highly likely the next installment of DA:O will have us drooling Lyrium.
tl;dr: mage hats are ugly and the mage clothing are more of a tramp stamp by the circle of magi.

Now obviously magic isnt "low" really, but magic items are obviously rare.
Personally I never thought of having not enough loot for my mages ... they are typically my main power, so I have spend only little thought on getting them better gear.

I just hope then in DA2 they set it somewhere or at a time when mages are more "free" to do what they want.
