In Diablo one game variation is the Naked Mage--players simply never clothe their mages in any equipment beyond a staff. Probably such a thing would be doable in Dragon Age as well. With mages so powerful, who needs clothes?
So like uh... mages can just piss off...

They don't need to make the mage robes super powerful to please people. Just make more variety. Hell have a vendor who sells very basic senior enchanter robes in 8 different color variations and folks would be happier. The robes with the feather shoulders are hideous. Only poncy tevinter idiots wear those. Add some robes with real hoods and so much of the fan base would be very pleased.
They don't have to make stuff powerful, they just have to make more stuff that looks cool but they have always sucked at this. I used to make fun of the NWN 1 armor and call it the men in tights game so much back when that game first came out I even pissed off some devs. Of course I loved the game, and have been an avid fan of Bioware games since the beginning but I can still make fun of their crappy designs all i want.
In DA:O there are alot of different and cool loooking heavy armors but the other armor types got shafted.
So many people seem to love hooded robes, and hooded cloaks, yet there are none.

I think rogues get the best of both worlds...I found all kinds of daggers for two handed rogues and nearly nothing for my mage...
And what is with the hats in this game? The mage hats have silly feathers and look soooo crappy...They make the mages look like chickens.

There are the hoods and there are the conehead hats, for mages. The hood types aren't too bad. My male mage found one and wore it.
There are first enchanter robes that are better than senior enchanter robes.
Avernus has robes (+ for blood mages)
There are a number of staffs. One is very, very expensive, one is a reward early on. Most are okay.
There are tevinter robes, chasind robes, (and there are at least 3 types of tevinter robes).
Doing a few of the main quest lines will net you other robes, and armor for rogues. Sometimes it's about timing. Check Wades AFTER your first set of drake scale but BEFORE your second set. Don't talk to him about scales. Just ask to see what he has. There are items in there only available between set #1 and set #2, before you ask for set #2. The best Rogue set in the game.
Do the various quest lines. Loot everything. Steal everything (I've gotten staffs that way you can't ever find for sale.) I haven't been banned from the city yet. But the guard did say he had his eye on me.
The stuff is out there, but it isn't just sitting on the countertop. You have to do some work for it. Solving puzzles instead of fighting often gives better outcomes, and sometimes better loot.
Reading your journal and reading the codex entries can sometimes clue you to pick something up you would have missed. Some of those items are "epic."
Just saying.

Or you could just take up the Arcane Warrior specialization and look totally badass in full plate armor while still being a wtfpwning character..
