How will my PC hold up?

Hey all.  This is my first post on the boards.  I signed up about a week ago, and have enjoyed reading through the forum and checking out everyone's characters.  I just uploaded my first character last night, but the portrait still hasn't appeared on the site -- maybe it didn't work properly?

I'm posting to see if I can get some advice on how Dragon Age will run on my computer.  I'm more excited about this game than anything in the past ten years, to the point that I'm starting to find it hard to sleep this week.  So I want to make sure I'm ready for it when it comes.  Here are my specs:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+ 2.41 GHz

2 GB RAM

Nvidia Geforce 7950 GX2,  512 MB of memory (Four of them running in... quad SLI?  PCI express slots, I think.)

Basically I just got this computer from my brother's house last night.  He hasn't used it for over a year.  I was originally planning on playing the game on xbox 360, but seeing the limits of that version I just couldn't bring myself to miss the PC version.  The computer is about three years old, but when he bought it, it was ridiculously expensive.  The kind of money no sane person spends on a PC.  I realize I could make a better game machine for pretty cheap by building my own with new parts, but I don't have the money right now.  I do have the money to put 100 or 200 bucks down for a video card upgrade.  So my question is, with the slightly outdated parts, is it worth sticking a new video card in there, and if so, which one comes the most highly recommended for Dragon Age?  (It's really the only PC game I'm interested in playing until Starcraft 2 comes out, so I don't need a good all around video card, just one that will run Dragon Age as well as it can, and hopefully compensate for my other specs.  Thanks so much if you've read this far, and thanks again if you can take the time to respond,

Alex

It'll handle medium settings just fine, possibly high settings too depending on how well SLI scales in DAO. I would wait see how it runs before upgrading.

It should be fine, the processor is a bit low- the graphics cards won't be your problem. Especially if you have 4 running SLI PCIexpress, because that means you are Shader 2.0 Compliant.

I think.

Anyway, should be fine: the processor would be my only worry but it passes the minimum so most likely you can play it prettily.

You could always throw down 500 bucks for a pc builder kit from tiger direct.

Does require building experience but that right there is one of the best deals you'll find.

I mean you can def do better, and you'll need to buy and install an OS but it is an option.

You should be set all around. And just a quick FYI, SLi refers to using 2 nvidia cards, not using 4 sticks of ram ;)

I think he means 4x graphics card with 512 MB ram tbh not 4 sticks of ram

Very possible, but highly doubtful. Games are just beginning to take advantage of a single SLi config, 4 cards would just be overkill and a waste.

It would be, but that is what was going on 3 years ago with the $3,000 computers.

Gaviteros is right, I do indeed mean four graphics cards all connected. The tower case is HUGE, rather heavy unpainted metal, and has a clear plastic window all along one side so you can see a cut away view of all the components.

No one seems to think replacing the 7000 series Nvidia cards is a good idea. I guess it depends on how the game makes use of the four card overkill. It's a weird combination -- a really deluxe version of outdated technology.

I was under the impression that everything geforce 8000 series and beyond was a big jump forward for graphics card technology. Those cards are so cheap now, and even recent stuff like an ATI Radeon 4870 or a 5770 goes for like 140$. Very tempting.

I will definitely wait and see how it handles the game before upgrading. Maybe once the game is out there will be an opinion on whether an Nvidia or ATI card is better suited to the game. I'm hooking it up to my 42" HDTV, which seems to cut off the edges of the screen in 1280x720. So I'm going to have to run it in 1920x1080, unless I can find a way to fix the screen getting cut off (it happens to the windows desktop, too -- I can't find a setting to make 720 display properly). Definitely going to upgrade at some point if I can't run it on high settings. I just hope a graphics card can get me there, with a processor a little under the recommended requirements.
