I've been recently plaing ME1 and there are tons of different ammo available, but I only end up using Tungsten against geth and Shredder against organics. Any practical reason to use other ammo for example cc reasons like in ME2?

I mostly play in veteran setting since i've understood that ME1 insanity is not really different, just more health / shields.

Some ammo (I think it's Pollonium rounds) prevents Krogan from regenerating. High explosive rounds can useful sometimes as well.

Any ammo with a damage over time effect should keep enemies like Korgan from regenerating. Other than that, there's no reason that I can think of to use a different ammo.

Well I usually put Inferno ammo in one team mate and the other gets the Poison ammo. Also almost all shotguns get the knockback ammo. The reason I do this is two fold. One the bonuses to damage is nice, and both ammo keeps krogan from regenerating which is especially nice. The other reason is so I know who is shooting me in the back so I can move them away, green flashes for poison ammo, red flashes for inferno ammo.

Now when it comes to my personal ammo, I always switch between shredder and tungsten except for Shotguns where I will use the knockback ammo on husk/creeper missions or high krogan missions. If you really don't mind the micromanagement then rotate tungsten/shredder for everyone, but I don't usually bother with the extra work.

This is essentially what I do too. Until recently, I was experiencing the overheat bug (on PC) so I avoided high explosive ammo. However, after a fresh install and a new profile, the bug appears to be gone, so I've tried it with rails on a sniper rifle, and it is pretty nice.

There were a few threads discussing this over the old forum. The conclusion was that all the damage-over-time and shield-penetrating ammo upgrades are not effective, because their damage bonuses are far less than the weapon's base damage. So it's faster to just "brutal force" it with tungsten or shredder VII.

You can't really go wrong sticking with tungsten and shredder. I'd agree with some of the comments that certain other types of ammo are occasionally useful. I tend toward sledgehammer rounds in shotguns for the knockdown (very useful against husks and creepers). For regenerating krogan, cryo, incendiary, proton, chemical, and the like will keep them from recovering.

So your best bet as KenLyns said is to just stick with the best tungsten and shredder you've got.

I've been playing through ME 1 again due to losing all my saves in a hard drive crash, and it seems to me that Tungsten and Shredder work best. Are husks organic or synthetic?

In ME1, I always used the incendiary/inferno ammo on almost all of the weapons.

The big exception is on the sniper rifles of those squadmates who do not have the skill for sniper rifles. For that, I use the biggest high-explosive upgrade I can get my hands on, so that as they're missing their target, they're still blowing up destroyable cover and still knocking their targets to the ground.

The HE rounds were great fun in ME, almost like firing a mini Cain every trigger pull. I enjoyed using them for the open outdoor missions against the Geth.

I found HE rounds fun on my sniper rifle on my soldier in ME1. Was always fun to snipe something in the head and watch it fly 20 yards.

I used tungsten, shredder, or sledgehammer on my assault rifle.  I did use the proton rounds for shield penetration but those stop upgrading after a certain point.

While I appreciate the power of Tungsten and Shredder, I found that I never remembered to actually switch ammo. I ended up having to choose between Cryo and Inferno, and went with Cryo because I could actually see what I was shooting when I zoomed in. The only exception was my Shotgun: I went with Sledgehammer rounds for the knockdown.

As for High Explosive Rounds, they're fun, but the slow Rate of Fire kills them for me.

Which is why I limited the HE to unskilled squadmate sniper rifle usage -- the fact that Tali or Kaidan can actually do something with their sniper rifle is worth the slower rate of fire.

Can't remember any more. According to the Wiki they are organic.

Why would you have squadmates use weapons they weren't skilled with in the first place?

Ah ok, should've checked that myself. I had grown a bit complacent about husks from ME 2, got a bit of nasty shock facing them in ME 1...

Switching ammo in ME1 was enough of a pain that eventually I just stuck to Polonium rounds. Does decent damage against everything, and is never completely useless.

Inferno rounds are good for rapid fire especially on pistols.

Sledgehammer rounds, lord do I miss them, have the bonus of stopping regen & knockdown. It was just not fair on a shotgun, you could run right up to the enemy & they could do nothing with you constantly knocking them down

Because in certain situations, you get better resultes than you would with them using the weapon(s) they are skilled in.

Say, on a hill and engaging foes around the entrance to a base... they're never going to hit from there with pistols, so why not give them HE ammo in their sniper rifles and let them fire bombs at the enemy?
