As far as I can tell, this question hasn't been asked yet. Much has been made of Bianca. Its firearm-esque status adds to Varric's Tony Soprano persona. It has a blade that comes out for melee combat. Given that DA2 seems to emphasize the independence of the companions (that they're real people apart from the PC), it seems unlikely that Varric would submit to using a weapon besides Bianca.

But then, you'd think Sten would have insisted on using his sword after the Warden reclaimed it.

Besides lore-related reasons, it just seems like a lot of wasted effort to put so much emphasis on a weapon but then make it optional for Varric.

Occam's Razor suggests that Bianca is Varric's only weapon. Can the developers confirm/deny this?

Is a crossbow really the best melee weapon for close in fighting?

I'd think the guy would be okay using a dagger . . .

I am hoping at the very least there will be some means to keep Bianca on par with other weapons as we progress through the game.

I second this.

and I hope this also holds true for Hawke's weapons.

For example, lore wise, for mage Hawke, you could say that the Staff of Parthalan ( the trailer staff ) is Hawke's "signature weapon."  It is after all a family heirloom and sort of implies her "destiny" ( to finish what her ancestor Parthalan worked towards and free the mages? ).

As such, it would kind of suck if Hawke's staff, like Varric's Bianca, were quickly outclassed by better weapons.........

I imagine it might level up as Varric levels up. This could be done by Varric taking it to a smith for modification, or by runes. I think visual changes would be awesome whenever a weapon was upgraded, but if runes are our only form of modification there might be no visual change, which would suck. I would prefer mechanical modifications like new sights for increased accuracy or a silverite blade attachment for better melee damage.

Varric will switch to a different weapon, but only after coming home one night to find Bianca in the arms of someone else. Two someones even. In the end, he couldn't blame Bianca, he plamed Isabela and her horndog double daggers who had stolen his woman.

*nine months later*

PC: Hey Varric, look at this awesome weapon Isabella gave me! It's like a giant crossbow that shoots tri-glaves!

Varric: Nnn-nooooooooo! *breaks into tears*

Maybe Bianca is a Marjoleine's Recurve kind of weapon? A really powerful, high-end weapon that can only be used by Varric and we only get after completing his companion quest?

But yeah, I never quite got the point of adding signature weapons (or armour) to a game when you're only going to use them for a fraction of the game's duration.

Reminds me of Sten's sword in Origins. After running all over Ferelden trying to find this dang sword, I was expecting it to be something awesome and that it would become Sten's best weapon. Instead it just turned out to be a lower tier item with nothing worthwhile about it.

No, Bianca will be Varric's only love interest.

While Bianca is too awesome for words, I don't think that Varric will be limited to Bianca if the player wants him to use other weapons. Varric should still be able to gain skill points in other talent trees if the player wants him to focus on dual wielding, but he'll miss out on Varric's special skill tree (which should focus on long range fighting like Isabela focuses on swashbuckling). As for Bianca herself, she should be adjustable through runes (if Im reading things right) as well as through V's skills/talents

I imagine a charming heart-to-heart where you talk with the crossbow about sharing him.

That's what the bayonet is there for.

I hope that, if Bianca cannot be swapped, it can be at least optimized with runes.
Considering the "fixed equipment" on companions and contrasting with the armor progression explained in another post, I'd be expecting NPC gear to slightly scale with level, to compensate their lower configuration options.

God, I thought we were talking about Assassin's Creed 2 for a moment there.

Oh god...I hope not. If they applied this static inventory system to Hawke and to weapons, I'd go from "buying the game most likely" to "never in a million years, so F you Bioware."

Before you get all "its not different from the old system, just 'streamlined'", know that it will make a difference to loot w****s like myself.

Well weapon slots are visable on the screenshot we have for Isabela's inventory so I'm sure we'll be able to equip different weapons for them. I think this has been confirmed by the devs as well.

I'm more worried Bianca will be Asala like and will be made obsolete as time goes on. Would be awesome if she got her base stats upgraded after a time jump!

Maybe if your weapons could level up with you. You level up and the base stats for the weapon you have equipped levels up, and you can choose what points on your weapon to level up, like the damage base, or the speed to hit... Or you could buy items to make the weapon better. People have mentioned runes, but what if there was something like, Bianca comes with a sinew cord pulley, but that can be upgraded to a steel chain pulley. Or Staff of Parlathan comes with an iron sword blade, but it can be upgraded to a silverite sword blade, etc.

I'd like something like the upgrade system from KOTOR to make a return. Better implemented, though, because K1 had, what, six or seven upgradeable items and even less actual upgrade items, and K2 did the exact opposite by drowning the player in craftable loot.

Besides runes, I hope character specific weapons can keep pace with the rest of the items and weapons in game. Maybe there'll be upgrades to buy during the game, like attachment things. I want to see Bianca completely blinged out by the end of DA2.

I'm also really wondering if special weapons are going to be the norm for companions, or if Varric is special.

Also, will Bianca, being a crossbow, do damage based on the same attributes as crossbows did in Origins? Crossbows were pretty weak, and Bianca seems like a fairly intense weapon.

I"m hoping you can get the weapons upgraded in more than one way, too. It'd be nice if a smith could change a weapon from, say, steel to red steel, then (later) red steel to silverite.

I can't take Bianca serious since Assassins Creed already has a sword named Bianca.

You know, I read that as some sort of euphemism, and then my brain kicked in and tried to work out how.

I feel like my brain just called me an idiot.
