O'right. Here are my computer specs first:
Pentium D OC at 2.91
Windows 7 64 bits
NVidia 8600 GTS

To get rid of some of some of the lagging I got a fair results
with those settings, and I just want to share with others my findings. For Nvidia owners, but maybe that can work
for ATI.

The in-game settings:
1280x800 (16:10)
Graphics: High
Antialaising: Off
Texture: Medium
VSYNC: Off
Framebuffer: Uncheck

From the dragon.ini:
[VideoOptions]
ResolutionWidth=1280
ResolutionHeight=800
FullScreen=1
UseVSync=1
GraphicsDetailLevel=2
AntialiasingLevel=0
TexturePack=1
EnableFrameBufferEffects=0
DisableMRT=1
DisableAspectRatioCorrection=0
RefreshRate=60
UseTrilinearFiltering=0
UseTripleBuffering=0
UseDesktopGamma=0
Gamma=0.5
EnableShadows=1
AnisotropicFilteringLevel=0
ForceLowSettings=0

Now here is the hard part. The rest of the graphics are controlled by the Nvidia driver
not the game. To do that open your Nvidia Panel:
Set PHYX to OFF
Go to manage 3D+program settings
add your .exe for the game= daorigins.exe
here are my settings:
Anisotropic filt. = off
Anitaliasing Gamma= Off  ----changed 19-11
Aliasing mode = Override
Antiliasing set= 2X
Antiliasing Transp. = Off ----changed 19-11
Texture clamp= off
Max. prerender frames= 0 ----changed 19-11
Multidisplay = Single display
Text. Filt. Anisotropic = off
" - Negative LOD = Global setting
" - Quality = Performance
" - Triliniear = Off
Threaded opt. = On
Triple buffer = Off
Vert. Sync. = Force off

There are still some lagging when there is too mugh particle effects, but that can't be helped. Otherwise the game seems more fluid that way. Hope it helps, made it a little bit better for me...

Oh yah, and disable any real time Antivirus and Antispyware porgram. Generally Right-clicking on the icon on the taskbar does the trick. It goes without saying, so to speak...

you might try changing your graphics to medium on that card instead... even if you have a 512mb version of that card it's fairly old and isn't really up to running the game maxed out

also, disabling shadows (shadows=0) in the .ini will do amazing things for slugging framerates

As does disabling any programs requiring buffered disk access - mainly file sharing programs. Because the game uses 100% cpu constantly, the buffering requires some hardware interrupts (that have higher priority than 3D rendering for data fluency) which causes micro-stutters.

I've been trying to figure out why my bf's PC is having so much trouble with a poor framerate on his PC. I had the game first and was playing it just fine with graphics maxed out with the below stats:

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
3GB RAM
Pentium D 820
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
1680x1050 resolution (now running 1920x1080 and still no problems)

I just gave him my 22" monitor and I'm on a 23" with absolutely no problem. He can't run his game with the graphics turned any higher than low. His stats are:

Vista Home Premium
AMD Athlon Dual Core Processor
3GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9300GE (up to date drivers from the NVIDIA website)
1680x1050 resolution

His system is comparable if not better than mine, but he's having a lot of trouble. I also noticed that his Dragon Age installation doesn't show under the Start -> Programs Menu. The Character Creator does, but not the game itself so I was thinking that maybe the problem was a bad installation.

I understand that workarounds are being provided like during down the resolution  and graphic detail, but I can't figure out exactly why his runs so much worse than mine.

yeah, if you're running torrents in the background or downloading stuff, you may well experience issues

Malaren, your bf's system is NOT comparable, as the graphic card is the culprit. 9300 GE is absolutely incomparable to GF8800 GT. Don't let the series number fool you ;)

The 9300E is an inferior card to the 8800 GT, he needs a new GPU if you want to see better performance

Wow, really? I assumed that b/c it was a 9300 that his was a better card. Wish I had known that yesterday when I was actually going to buy him a new card but didn't b/c I thought his was better. No wonder I couldn't fix it, lol. Thank-you so much guys.

Beleive it or not, very little difference. The game is at least lookable, but from medium to high not much impact...I play at a lower resolution to have more details and AA. I compromise one way for another.

But regarding the particle effects I found no way to turn this around...there is too much particle emitters at times, especially in combats or in weather effects. Unless they have done this with PNG transparent textures (Which would be a very bad idea). The only ones who can fix this is Bioware, by giving us a mean of control on particles.
