Well, here's where the confusion lies for me.  Mass Effect 2 has heavy usage of alpha maps, requiring DXT3 or DXT5, so that adds some filesize there.  More to the point though, I don't see any possible reason that a 1024x1024 texture map will still retain the immense amount of detail in a 4096x4096 texture map.  Even when I've tried to just cut the resolution down to 2048x2048, there was a MASSIVE loss in detail.

Also, while I do appreciate your help, I'd prefer you not post my textures for anyone to use.  I know the one you posted was just Shepard's specular map, but still.

Yes, you're right about the lack of quality retention. :(
I do have some screenshots, but they're not very interesting. At first I thought the bad performance was due to the large file sizes, but I think that affects mainly loading time. Frame rate is pretty bad regardless of the size of the textures, and the culprit is probably Texmod. Loading any texture, no matter how small, will seriously hurt FPS, from a capped 75 down to only 30. I wouldn't even mind the loading times if it weren't for the in-game performance.

Well, that's the weird thing. I haven't actually noticed any performance impact from Texmod, even with 8xAA. I do have utterly massive loading times, but the framerate hasn't really slowed.

I have a stupid question:

does Texmod have to run in the background while ME2 is playing? or can I alt-tab out to close it down once I am in the game?

As far as load times, I think the most I have ever had to wait with all the textures I use is the 5 or 6 minutes it takes from my screen to go from black and to the bioware animation. I do not experience any other loading issues, and as far as framerate goes, there hasn't been any kind of slowdown for me.

ME2 is launched through texmod.

This is the exact method I used to get it to work.

11 minutes, 25 texture modifications.

I don't have any changes in anything except game startup and that's normal. Framerate, loading times, etc. Everything seems the same except the new visual awesomeness I get.

Loading times are actually finicky. The loading times are determined by the .bik files in the movie sections. If your computer is fast enough, the level loads long before the .bik movie ends, but due to some coding or limitation, the .bik file has to play to the end.

The best workaround I've found is this ME2 splash screen that replaces the orginal .bik movie files. I get a loading screen that lasts for 3 secs and I'm back in the game.

Thank you for the link and the benchmark, Spartanburger. My framerate drops are very similar.
I guess we just have to hope this is fixed in a future version of Texmod and/or Catalyst driver.

And for our next release, we have a big guddamn hero, Zaeed Massani.

Download Here.

In the interest of being totally honest, most of that texture is actually the high resolution source texture that Bioware left in the game files, yet didn't use in the game.  I did add my own touch here and there, but at least 90% of the credit goes to Bioware themselves.

So, this leaves us with just Kasumi, Thane, Jack, Samara and Grunt to do now.

Nice. Good work as always.

I seem to recall that you were planning on doing a big-ish NPC pack at some point as well. Are you still planning on doing that, has it been moved to the back-burner, or have you changed your mind about it?

I am going to be doing an NPC pack, but that's waaaaaaaaay down the line.  I already know that Jack alone is going to take upwards of a week to complete (TATTOOOOOS!!!! *shakes fist*), and the NPC pack will take even longer.

That said, the NPC pack certainly won't be as detailed as the squadmates, but it will take a long time regardless.

Understood and fair enough. I will just be ecstatic when the science uniforms in their various colors (perfect example can be seen when you run into Gianna on Ilium) don't look like utter crap. ;)

They definitely don't need to be super detailed, but any level of detail is better than what so many of them are now. ;)

Anyway, your time, your project, your rules. I am content to wait patiently and reap the benefits of your awesome work when they arrive. :D

That's some really nice work, JeanLuc. One question though, would it actually be possible to improve the character's hair in this way as well? The different hairstyles (for femshep in particular) look too shiny and unrealistic, for example in the screenshot you posted here: imageshack.us/f/42/masseffect2201103182355.jpg/. It would be interesting if there was a way to improve those as well.

Jean, I have request that a lot of others may wish as well. With Grunt's update, would you be able to cover his exposed arms? The bi's and tri's not being covered when he's in a hazardous environment irks me because he has a helmet but still not entirely protected. If it's do-able it would be greatly appreciated.

He said Thane is next before releasing Zaeed. :P

Besides, creativity doesn't always care about your plans... X might be on your list while you suddenly are inspired to do Y instead. ;)

This is very true.  For example, today I was inspired to work on Jack's tattoos and if it weren't for the fact that I have to go to work, I'd keep going on them for hours, pain in the ass that they may be.

Sorry, I don't want to be annoying, but the Kestrel armor uses the default texture but in high-res, or it is high-res with another texture?
If it uses another texture, could you make a Kestrel armor with default high-res texture?

Same question to the the N7 armor.

Sorry if you can't understand, english is not my language.

These are amazing texmods. Thank you very much for creating them. :-) Are you planning on doing any other armor pieces?

Wow, awesome!:o

I can't wait to see the finished texture. But I have to say, I don't envy you. Those are some details on her...

A quick preview of how Jack is looking ingame. She still needs a lot of the smaller tattoos put in as well as some shading (right now, all the tattoos are fairly flat).
