I've probably said this before, but I've used Texmod with my Radeon HD 5770 with all of Jean-Luc's Ultra textures running.  Never had a single problem except the load time - which can be a few minutes, but who really cares - and what people describe has just not happened to me.

The game with occasionally drop from 50fps to 35fps (in one or two places like the district where you first encounter Samara), but zippie-doo-dah, it's barely noticable.

I can't be the only one.

Maybe people just have crappy cards/processors?

I recently upgraded from a 5770 to a 6870.

Funny thing is, the fps that the game drops to remains the same.
I use the ultra pack. A total of 32 texture mods are loaded at one time.

With the 5770, at 1920x1080, in the CIC, without any mods loaded but still loaded through textmod I'd get a min/max/avg of 51/61/57.447
With all my mods loaded I would get 14/28/21.362

There was no noticeable difference between loading one mod and loading them all.

Now here's where it gets strange. With the 6870 (a card that essentially doubled my FPS in all other games), the game will drop to nearly the same fps as the 5770, a min/max/avg of 16/30/20.

These cards are not simply bad. That's definitely not it as the vast majority of people have fully functioning cards and they still have problems.
The problem is not unique to ATI/AMD cards. I have seen two Nvidia users who had the same problem (witha GTX 260 btw). I have also seen people with single 6xxx cards and crossfire 5770s who have had no problems at all.

It's not a CPU issue as those with both Intel i7, i5, and AMD Phenom II processors all have had problems.

One theory I have is that it has something to do with the catalyst control/AMD VISION control center/[Nvidia equivalent]. One person mentioned forcing Catalyst A.I. off and having that increase his fps by at least 50% of the drop.

I am going to run a few tests with different configurations to figure out what is going on.

Okay, so some results of a few tests on a HD 6870.
Benchmarks are of a stroll around the CIC following a set path. All are at 1920x1080. All changes made stack unless otherwise mentioned.

Loaded through texmod, but no packages loaded: 54/62/59.763

Stock AMD VISION Engine settings: 15/31/23.048 (a drop of around 61.21% ohgodwhyyyyy)

Disabling surface format optimization: 15/34/23.415 (no major difference)

Turning catalyst A.I. Texture Filtering to Performance: 16/35/24.018 (no major difference)

Turning AMD Optimized Tessellation off: 16/34/23.957 (no major difference)

Tessellation on to use application settings (yes this is different from the 'AMD Optimized' setting and still stacks): 15/33/23.243 (no major difference)

Wait for vertical refresh set to always off: 15/31/23.411 (no major difference)

Anisotropic Filtering forced to 2x (taken off 'use application settings'): 16/34/24.631 (no major difference)

Anti-Aliasing forced to 2x (taken off 'use application settings'): 15/29/21.34 (Minor decrease in performance, reverting).

Open GL Triple Buffering enabled: 16/35/25.568 (Minor difference mostly attributed to the fact that the Open GL buffering increases framerate with virtualsync. This is good for ME2 because of the godafukkindammit forced vsync that makes standard benchmarking so difficult).

Uninstalled VISION engine control center: 16/30/23.981 (no major difference)

Essentially, I no longer think it has anything to do with the catalyst control suite.

It doesn't (I think). My suspicion is that it has somethiong to do with ME2's light rendering/bloom/etc. tehcniques, because I get far less of a framerate drop withthe original and they use a different light renderer.

IMHO, try turning off the Bloom without turning off the entire Post-Process Effects option in the config.ini (because that'll also turn of other things like color managment and Depth of Field). Otherwise, try turning off the entire Post-Process and see how it goes.

My bet is still on Bloom, though.

Well, not quite to an ingame shot but I'm getting really close. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw a release within the next 6-12 hours.

I'm contemplating a redesigned version where it only covers her right eye, similar to how Garrus wears his visor.

That would be really nice indeed, 'cause I find the vanilla one cover too much of her eyes which is a good feature I would like to keep seeing on Miri's face :)

Can't wait to see the polished mod from you, JeanLuc! :D
