I found the planet where you try to get to the prothean artifact to use the trinket to be an uphill struggle.
This planet has gotten easier the more times I have done it. Tricks are to go for the trinket first, follow the vegetation greenery up the mountains as paths, and then once you use the trinket go out the back and into the red zone to get picked up and replaced at the map starting point. This means you only have to fight one way through the mountains instead of driving back out which for some reason is much harder to do. Saves a bunch of time and headaches.
I have also found that on almost every map the designers built, almost roads or better driving areas. I have learned to use the map elevations and to look at the terrain to see where to drive, often the most direct path isn't the best and taking a slight detour means huge time savings.
Yeah, I redid that mission sunday night and if you go to the ruin directly from your starting point and then just return the way you came in it's not bad at all. Before, I think I made the mistake of getting the module first then directly heading for the ruin, that is more of pain in the ass.
Actually if you go out the back of the ruin and head into the red area of the mini-map, Joker will come on and say you went right off the grid now we are going to have to bring you back, and then drops you back at the original starting point of the map. This means you can take about 10-20 seconds to run off the map and be put back on the central plain where you started before heading to the ruin. It saves time and a bunch of headaches of trying to get back up the mountains.

Wow, here just the other night, nearing the end of my 4th me1 playthru, i was thinking how terrible chasca, and most definitely NODACRUX!!,were. In my opinion though, elatania wasn't that bad.

The planet with the space monkies and the prothean site you use the amulet at.I found none of the other planets in any way difficult since you could plan your routes with the map but god the trek to the prothean site sucked.Walking a tightrope with a 6-wheeled apc is no fun.

NODACRUX. DEAR GOD, NODACRUX. It has endless holes and incredibly steep mountains Dx, my Mako was not made for abuse of this kind!

This is Nodacrux:

Oh look, isn't that cute?
*ahem*
This is Casbin:

You get stuck in a hole? That's it, you're screwed. No hope.

While it's not difficult to to drive around on, much of it is pretty flat, Altahe has the craziest mountains. They're like daggers.

The planet with the biotic cult. Those mountains were ridiculous.

Now I am nostalgic for ME1.
But I know if I play it I will be compelled to collect every item and mineral, and that takes more time than the missions practically.
To anyone "from the future" that might read this, do yourselves a favor and get a map guide if you intend to try and get all the minerals / writings / turian markings / medallions.

I'd like to know who designed these terrains, particularly the plethora of mountainous ones where the peaks are shaped like cathedrals. Sorry for not answering the question. Just venting.

I'm with visciouscargo, I just don't get why every planet is so mountainous. It's ridiculous. ME2 might not have had the same degree of freedom in exploration but at least you didn't spend half the game just getting to your destination. Skyrim is flatter.
Otherwise I'm mostly enjoying ME1 tho.

Two things help deal with most planet terrains in ME1. First is using the relief maps to work out the flattest routes to the mission objective. Second is not giving a rip about exploring to get all the minerals and ancient artefacts - getting absolutely everything once is enough, and I don't even worry about getting the less accessible loot.

Worst one is that green one with the insane mega cliff you have to drive around, post-Feros completion. Think it's with scientists in a bunker. Whatever that is, to this day, I still get stuck on that damn planet trying to get up that hill.

I used to like to explore, to find the artifacts and go prospecting but the mountains and getting stuck and flipping over just drove me nuts. Eventually I relied on the map exclusively, but that takes some of the fun out of stumbling across something on your radar.

I agree with the general view that the planets with the most mountains (and even more importantly the steepest mountains) are the ones that present the most difficulty. The mountains were basically the main difficulty I encountered when traveling over the various non-mandatory planets of this game.
However, my favorite planets, leaving aside the mountain issue for a moment, are the ones with plant life and clouds.
