This week, we present Aveline, one of Hawke's companions in Dragon Age 2. Aveline Vallen is a soldier, a master of sword and shield, and a tireless guardian. Then, visit the Gallows, a ghastly memento of Kirkwall's slaving past.

Aveline looks pretty awesome! I'm interested in seeing how her character grows, and if she has any Chevaliar-trained trees. Her husband dies on the way out of Ferelden doesn't he? I wonder what gets her to stay in your party then.

The Gallows is very... Well. The name fits. It's pretty intimidating. Being dragged in chains to see that in full work with the executions.. that would be horrifying. I'm guessing this is the main gate into Kirkwall?

Edit: Carver! :lol: And a new companion in the background! He/She/It is .... huge. They're casting a lighting spell it looks like. Seems almost bigger than Shale was!

Erm can't quite make out what the description is trying to say about aveline, that she's no paladin but a realist? Seems a bit vague. Still like the art and screenshots.

"Protect what matters with everything you have. Or you’ll have nothing. And deserve it."

Apparently she doesn't have an armor, just a blacksmith's outfit.

So, Aveline is a permanent party member? I hope she's not the second LI, or if she is, I hope there's more than 2 female LIs.

BTW, Carver be seen in the background of this screenshot, though it looks like Hawke is a mage, so this theory could be true:

if ( Hawke == mage )  Carver lives;

else Bethany lives;

Everything looks nice, and I'm looking forward to see her in-game :)

Also, the weapon and shield design look incredible! I think I'm gonna *cough* borrow that shield from her after I recruit her :D

Her design reminds me of Alias of Westgate. While I would have preferred hear in at least a suit of chain, the whole sword & board while lightly armored thing is okay with me. I might be biased though, having played just such a character in a P&P game once. :P

Anyway she looks good. I feared she might be a Chantry zealot; being married to a templar and all.

Eh, I'm not too keen that the tank of the party isn't in any armor- that just seems silly. And the graphics from those screens aren't anything to write home about really which is a bit disappointing.

The Gallows art was very nice though- but as more environments are revealed it seems like most of DA2 is going to be in Kirkwall and no where else? Thats not bad necessarily, but I just hope there are a good number of areas to explore.

The whole motto is kinda silly. So, if you have nothing what will you protect? If you have only your life will you protect it with your life? If you only have one pair of smelly socks would you protect em with your life?

Ugh... I really, really hope that isn't her 'iconic' outfit.. it's... well, anything but iconic. Besides as brock says the tank wearing a blacksmith's apron seems a bit silly really.

The shield's nice though, seeing some improvement due to larger texture sizes I guess.

Edit: @Gremlin I think the point is if you're at the stage where you have nothing but your life, you already haven't been fighting to keep what you have with everything you've got so effectively it's your own fault. Her character sounds interesting I don't think I remember having any "good" realist characters.

If I'm reading Aveline's description right, she cares a lot about protecting certain people, but doesn't care about anyone else. That's actually pretty interesting.

I really like Aveline's design. It's less extravagant than what Hawke is wearing.  And who does the environment renderings? Very nice.

Also the gallows look interesting. I wonder what purpose they will serve in the game.

Smelly socks matter?
The way I interpreted it: "If you don't protect what matters with all you've got, you'll lose everything, and it'll be your own fault."

Also, love her concept art. It's so full of personality.

My first thought was, 'oi, she's running around in an apron?'

Then I thought, 'well, at least she knows her place is in the kitchen'.

Not sure that's the message Bioware wants to send, though.

Sorry, but no. That kind of 'armour' works for someone expecting a knife fight... or a stack of dirty dishes. Otherwise it's just hampering your running speed as you flee from anyone who brought something bigger than a knife.

She starts in clothing. She'll almost certainly get armor during the course of the game.

Aveline looks nice. I'm looking forward to seeing Isabella from the first game in the second. She looks to be great in DA2.

i wish people would read into stuff more.. All the characters start in the clothes on their backs, because in reality, you don't walk around everywhere in full armor, if you can even afford it.

just like in real life, if a soldier gets attacked at home, he may have a weapon but he won't have his armor on and ready to go.
