'Statues of tortured slaves fill the Gallows courtyard, a ghastly memento of Kirkwall's history. The statues are not monuments to the suffering of slaves. Every inch and angle of the courtyard was designed by magisters bent on breaking the spirit of newcomers. Executions here took place daily, sometimes hourly, and corpses were hung from gibbets throughout the yard. New slaves trudging in from the docks saw what awaited them.'

This is a new region in Kirkwall, why do I get the feeling we will have to do a quest that involves killing some reanimated corpsed and whatnot...

Also do they still use this place for executions?

I think they removed the corpses during the last millennium, so that won't be too much of a problem.

Do these statues have some kind of protection on them, otherwise you'd think that they'd get taken down when Kirkwall fell for the first time.

Well it's from Tevinter,so you never know for sure what's magical and whatnot.

The Tevinter in Kirkwall seemed to have the same notion about the purpose of architecture as Stalin, although they certainly had better architects. But Kirkwall makes the Caesars look like pikers when it came to making the populace feel dwarfed by the power of the state.

So far Kirkwall is much more both historically and aesthetically interesting then Denerim or other cities in DA:O. I am glad there will be such a focus on it in DA2.

I think they should put up a sign there that says "Pirates ye be warned."

I like that color scheme better than the in-game version.

To be fair that's not hard when only one side has to worry about labour, laws of physics, technological limitations and budget.

What does this have to do with greed?

Tevinter Magisters did buy a lot of slaves to act as bloodbags for powerfull Blood Magic...
But yeah, it should probably fall under lust for power, not greed.

Let's see: It used to be or still is a place where people where exucuted, not once a week or once a month. But daily and sometimes hourly. Not only that, but thanks to the way the Magisters designed the Gallows the slaves were living in a state of constant fear.

If the Veil isn't sunderd yet, then it will be soon I guess.

I wonder if, after playing DA 2, mage players will still talk about how wonderful the Imperium was and how they wished the Tvinter hadn't been cast down by the nasty Chantry.

I agree, and it makes sense too. From what we know Kirkwall has been closer to and a larger part of major events than Denerim - or Ferelden in general. The Free Marches might not be Tevinter, but they are still more 'important' than backwater Ferelden it seems. Well, Blights excluded of course.

I'm wondering what the plot will be surrounding slavery in DA2. We know Kirkwall has a long history with slavery, and that Elves still live in poverty there. I'm guessing it'll be involved in the plot to some degree.

Maybe the big problem the Chantry faces isn't restricted to Magi and/or Flemeth but the Elves are involved as well?

depends on the approach, if the Imperium is not 100% unified in the way they handle things like, say, the Camarilla was in V:tM (you could expect certain cornerstones to be in place wherever you went in a Camarilla dominated city...at least in general) then Kirkwall might just be the exception not the rule
