I like the look of the slave statues more in the concept art. They're actually on chains and the slaver knight figures look like they're in control instead of just standing around trying to seem menacing.

Yeah, I like that Kirkwall seems to have more of a sense of scale than Denerim. And I'm loving how it looks in the concept art, but the in game shots look very...drab? It just seems like alot of the assets and statues and banners and such are being reused a TON.

I really wish the in game shots could match the colors and dramatic lighting of the concept art.

Do these statues have some kind of protection on them, otherwise you'd think that they'd get taken down when Kirkwall fell for the first time.

Or they'd get disassembled for scrapmetal/stone. Or did they left them as a part of open-air museum?

But Kirkwall makes the Caesars look like pikers when it came to making the populace feel dwarfed by the power of the state.

To be fair that's not hard when only one side has to worry about labour, laws of physics, technological limitations and budget.

Lol! Very true. Especially the 'laws of physics' part.

Kirkwall is definitely intended to impress, and it does that, but I think living surrounded by that kind of architecture would be very uncomfortale. Denerim looks like a place where people are intended to live, while Kirkwall looks like a place they're intended to serve. Which is likely the point.

It's still a huge improvement on Denerim in that department, but I'm hoping once we get to see more of the place that it'll match the awesome concept art as well.

Lowtown is what I would like to see next. The concept art shows it being cluttered, dirty, etc. Want to see how well that is realized in the game.

Yeah I'd like to see Lowtown, the rougher parts of big cities often prove to be quite visually interesting, if not beautiful to look at. I'm quite surprised that it seems like Isabela's quest starts in High Town, although I wouldn't be surprised if we first visit Lowtown and meet Varric in the pub there...

I just hope each area of Kirkwall ends up looking visually distinct. Obviously the overall architecture and stuff will feel similar, but I hope it all doesn't blend together. And this would go for other areas too outside of Kirkwall- I know they want everything hot rod samurai'd but I hope that doesn' mean everything ends up overly blocky and spikey such that everything ends up feeling to similar and blending together.

It reminds me of the book Naked Empire, of the Sword of Truth Series by Terry Goodkind.

Considering what happens when there's a ton of deaths and suffering, wouldn't it make sense to spread your official death and suffering out across the city? So as not to sunder the vale in one spot?

Tho I guess if they had a ton of mages they could maybe seal it up.

You're assuming that making a hole in the veil wasn't considered desirable.  As we've seen in the rest of the game, some magic that can't normally be performed CAN work close enough to a tear.

Plus we are talking about a originally Tevinter city. If the Chantry is to be believed they are the ones who actually physically entered the Fade through a Veil tear. Hell for all we know a Gallow in another city was used in this purpose.

"And here is the Carnival of Blood where happy Tvinter children would observe lions 'playing' with the slaves before dinner."

"Then there's the Festival of Agony! Every year, to celebrate the turn of the year, thousands of slaves were offered up to the Seven Gods. They were ritually sacrificed by having their hearts plucked out or sometimes a young priest would skin them and wear them while dancing through the town square."

Well High Town is where the rich live so I imagine that that place would look totally diffrent from Low Town. I mean at least I am expecting to see manors and palaces. Then there is a place where the poorest of the poor live (the elves) I believed they lived in or near a mine I believe a dev said that. As for the area around Kirkwall... I only know of a region called Sundermount where the oldest of the Arlathan elves went to sleep. So... Who wants to explore some elven ruins to find some goodys.

What I'm trying to say is, Kirkwall and the Free Marches will probably end up being great.

Just curious has Bioware said at all how we get around Kirkwall? Is it like Denerim where you get a city-map and hope around to different places in the city. Or is it more open?

It will probably be a Amn/Denerim kind of deal. Sections of the city.

Yes, but this time the sections would be bigger, right?

You have a city map to go around to sections of the city... which are sometimes large districts, spots within those districts that you've already found (and thus opened up as a destination on the city map) or specific instances of areas that you need to visit for an open quest but which aren't normally accessible.
