Will the graphics for the ps3 be better than that of the 360's for me 2?

I have a feeling the graphics on the PS3 will be a tad better, but only because of the one-year gap. There have to be some improvements over the 360 and PC versions, similar to ME1 when it was ported to the PC back in 2008.

Maybe, maybe not. UE3 is notoriously terrible when running on the PS3, and I wont be surprised if it ends up looking a little bit worse.

ME1 looked better on PC because of the resources available. Same reason ME2 looks better on PC. The assets were all the same, but with a stronger system you can run at higher resolutions with better AA and AF to polish the IQ.

I don't follow the ole console world that closely (PC gamer here). However I was under the impression that games utilising the Unreal Engine tend to perform worse on the PS3 than they do on the PC/360.

With Mass Effect 2 being an unreal engine powered game I would expect Bioware to run into the same problems other developers have run into with unreal and the PS3.  Hopefully they will overcome these issues and get the game running as good as the 360 version.  However expecting any "extra" graphical niceness over the PC/360 version is probably being a bit too optimistic.

As EatChildren said with regard to the PC version, it looks better primarily due to the extra power available to PC gamers. I play ME 2 at 1920 x 1080 and get 60fps out of it, I really can't see the PS3 matching that or even coming close to it.

Exactly, charmingcharlie. UE3 has a history of terrible performance on the PS3, comparitive to the Xbox 360. I'll be surprised if the PS3 looks better, simply because it doesnt fit with UE3's past performance.

There might be some tweaks though. They may be able to get it running at a higher resolution, though I doubt it. Possibly re-render the CGI cutscenes in a higher res, thanks to the extra space on the Bluray disk.

PC version should still look better than both, with the CGI exception should they redo them.

Doubt it. UE doesn't run well on the PS3 for some reason.

I was beaten.

The PS3 is capable of making it look better. It's up to the developers to bring it up to par.

In raw hardware yes (except for PC), but as I and others have said UE3, the engine Mass Effect runs off, is notorious for performing pretty badly on the PS3. Im sure it will look good, but if the trend continues it will be hampered by the same issues other UE3 games have on the PS3.

I think it will look good. Maybe even a little better. But I doubt you'll get a graphically inferior product.

Up to developers, yes, but not BioWare. There's a well known (and previously mentioned) issue with the Unreal engine on PS3, so that's where one problem lies.

Also, the PS3 can be a difficult piece of kit to program for. ME2 is (I imagine) essentially being ported to the PS3, which would make maximizing the potential of the more powerful hardware much harder than if the game had been built from the ground up for the console.

Many multi-format titles run at lower resolutions or FPS, amongst other things, on PS3 than they do on 360 largely because of difficulties in working with the architecture. Of course, there are also converse examples out there, but they are much fewer.

I certainly wouldn't expect ME2 to look better on PS3 than 360.

Here's a novel approach: how about we wait 'till the game is actually out first? :P

Unlikely. Multiplatforms usually runs and looks better on the 360.

Like I said, lets waits until it actually comes out before speculating about it. That would be the most sensible thing to do. Lets not turn this forum into flamebait for pointless squabbles over "console 'X' is better than this" talk. It a good way to get a thread locked down. Jeez.

It's actually true.

Multiplats tend to be built on the 360, then ported to the PS3. PS3 exclusives always look a lot better, but when it comes to multiplats, the 360 usually runs the game considerably better.

you need to redo alot of code to optimize the game for PS3, so I dont think that will happend.

It will look same or worse then on Xbow 360

Again with the stupid assumptions. For those too stupid to read simple English let me say it one last time: LET'S WAIT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS! Damn thing isn't even out yet for crying out loud. Jeez.

You are in the past my friend.

Today PS3 games with the unreal engine look as good if not slightly better than the 360 version.

There are many Unreal engine games out there that prove the ps3 version is capable of great things

For example look at some of these games...

Batman: Arkham Asylum

Enslaved: Odyssey to the west

Unreal Tournment 3

Mortal Kombat vs. DC universe

Section 8

Blacklight: Tango Down

X-men Origins: Wolverine

Tom Clancy Rainbow Six Vegas 2

Borderlands

Bulletstorm (Not out yet, but granted, the ps3 version will be just as good as the 360 version)

All amazing looking games, and performs just as good as the xbox 360 version and maybe slightly better.

Oh and even the PS3/ PC excluisve DC universe online will be using the Unreal 3 engine.

So in the end....if something goes wrong...Its not the hardware's fault....its the developers ;)

Arkham Asylum does not look or run better on the PS3. It looks and runs worse. I'd also argue that Enslaved is in a similar boat, same for Dark Void (though Dark Void looks like crap anyway).

As for the others, you're probably right for most of them. I dont have an Xbox 360 or PS3, I just know about the issues developers have had trying to get multiplatform UE3 titles perform and look the same on both platforms, and in many, many cases the PS3 has unfortunately come off second best.

Fingers crossed BioWare do the best they can, but I'll be very surprised if it looks better than the Xbox 360 version. On par at best.

Let's put it this way. Call of Duty Black Ops, which is not UE3 but which sells enough that Activision has the incentive to optimize for both platforms, runs at resolutions of 1024x600 on the 360 and 960x544 on the PS3.

The PS3 is a b*tch to program for and unfortunately the middleware never got good enough to make up for that fact. I know some fanboys don't want to accept that but that's the way it is. I only got a PS3, no 360, and I'm happy with that. If you want the best graphics invest $150 in a good graphics card.

So I doubt that the PS3 version will look better per se. The question is if they invested some time to solve some of the issues of the retail version (some ugly textures especially) and fix some of the other stuff the same way the ME1 PC port fixed many of the 360's issues (especially the improved inventory).

The second question is if they're gonna backport those things to the other two versions (the 250 point Improvement Pack =). I'd especially like higher quality cutscenes and the texture fixes mentioned above. Pretty please.

UT3 ran pretty fine on my PS3. And it came out for PS3 before 360. I don't think it will have performance issues. If anything, the 360 version does. Ever since the new update the game lags even more than it did before. Matinee sequences don't work properly, and the audio isn't synced up.
