Not sure why we are talking about Loghain again in this thread, but re. not winning any battles since the war with Orlais, that is not the case. He routs the attempted takeover of the Circle Tower in The Calling.

Ahhh I haven't read the book!!! ....at least I know that now <_<

I haven't read the Calling, Addai so will take your word for it. Then he hasn't wracked up any combat time (prior to Ostagar) for what is the time frame of "The Calling"? Twenty years ago?

I doubt that a man like Loghain hasn't seen any combat since "The Calling". Especially given Ferelden's political situation. He is in top shape and a great fighter once recruited. Not bad for a man in his fifties.

Roughly.  He is commanding general of Ferelden's armies.  Is he supposed to go out and invade people just to keep up his skillz?  LOL

Sorry, I just assume everyone has read them by now!  I added a spoiler warning.

The book did come out before the game and this is the spoiler section, you know. At some point, you're going to have to expect that people will talk about the books.

The spoiler section for the games not the books.

It even clarifies in the Dragon Age: Origins & Awakening Offical Campaign and Storylines (Spoilers Warning).

Nothing about the calling. The offical campaign I assume is what we got in the actual game itself.

Yeah but, again, it came out over a year ago. It's just not realistic to expect it to never come up, especially when the topic of conversation is the past of people who were in those books. And I think just the fact that this is a spoiler section means you can reasonably expect to see spoilers about things that aren't just the 'official campaign and storyline.'

Just pointing out that his whole rep is built on being a great tactician/general and he has actual little proven combat experience barring what he did in his prime 20-30 years ago. I would hardly call a man in his 50s 'in top shape'. Maybe 20 years ago he was 'in top shape' but not now. I would imagine he is in as good a shape as a man in his 50's can be. I will grant him that. He probably spars with his men as his army seems very devoted to him to help build morale and keep him in shape but this is very different from fighting foes who want you DEAD. Game mechanics wise you also get him too late in the game to build as a tank (barring mods which are not available on Xbox/PS3) and have to go with default Bioware build. And his default figure is the same for every other human male in the game, so technically I don't know what he is really supposed to look like. He calls Eamon 'fat' and Oghren calls Teagan 'pot bellied'. I've seen the potbellied in the game neither of them look like that.

How do you release Jowan's fool self anyways? Whenever I release him he runs up to Isolde and gets himself caught and I can never release Jowan without Eamon refusing.

You have to tell him "I never want to see you again" after you release him from his cell.

Oh. Thanks.

I have to try that sometime. ^_^

Yeah but the point is this a spoiler forum for the games not the books.

It's not unrealistic to see some but a spoilers warning is common courtesy seeig as how this forum isn't for discussing the books.

I know, I already know a few things about the book I'm just joking :) I already know about Fiona, Utha, the architect, and the fade like in Origins though I don't know why yet, so I'm already spoiled of certain things from the book, I need to find some time during the holidays to go to the US and buy it besides the christmas presents.

I usually do so but forgot.  I apologized.  The poster even said he was kidding.  Let's move on, yes?

Why quote me? I had already moved on. Just was making a statment about what you did was common courtesy and how the spoilers forum isn't for the books.

I'm a little confused.  Being in good physical shape has nothing to do with being a military tactician.  (Though in a Morrigan banter there is a comment about Loghain's physical condition.  :))  I really don't think you are going to get far arguing that his reputation is undeserved.  A ragtag rebel army that was on the run came back and defeated one of the strongest armies in Thedas, full of better equipped, armored, horsed knights.  When the events of TST start, the Orlesians even had the majority of nobles behind them.  Naturally Loghain and Maric did not do this alone, but no one can deny that Loghain's tactical mind contributed.  Ferelden exists as an independent country because of what they did, and he wasn't just sitting around for 20-30 years, either, but helping to run the country and keep it free.

Loghain is a good general. He just let his obsession with an old war nearly destroy his country.

I think she was just rebutting the claim someone else made that Loghain is in amazing shape or something (tbh I'm just skimming this thread).  He's a brilliant military mind (his takeover of Fereldan was very cunning), but canonically speaking Alistair is the better fighter, considering he beats him in DSC as well.

He's quite good at telling other people what to do!  Not so good at taking matters into his own hands apparently...

The capacity to command men is a very valuable skill, one that would be required in a time such as the Blight. I'll take that over physical prowess any day.

True. Though the blight needed someone willing to take matters into their own hands. If the Warden and Alistair hadn't Fereldan would've been lost to the blight.

Didn't help Loghain or Anora much though.

Made the sentence more accurate, Alistair was not necessary in any way.
And it was the Warden's leadership that was crucial, not necesarrily physical prowess, even if we ended up being a one man army.

Except Loghain doesn't really command anyone if you take him with you.  He's just another lackey with the Warden calling the shots.

That depends on how you play tbh.  Gilsa has a game she completed where she abandoned/killed almost every party member possible.
