I just played the origin recently, I am certain it is said, most likely by dairhan.

Odd. I play a female and he doesn't say that...hmm...he says you have more options but I don't see how you inherit the castle when Fergus is there. It's really odd that.

I actually remember him saying that to my M.Cousland too.  Gender specific maybe?

Wait...where is it said you're more likely to inherit than Fergus? I didn't see that anywhere. Hell one of the options as you're running away is to tell Fergus that he is the new Teryn.

While I don't remember who says it (someone does, though that could just be them trying to flatter you. Maybe Dairren?), the fact remains that you have not officially been named heir regardless of what your parents intended and so, as the oldest, the title seems to automatically fall to Fergus.

Good. I didnot want to start insulting him.

What is the line exactly? Because that to me is really odd given that Fergus is not only older but already has a wife and heir.

But if you're more capable then your parents may decide to leave it to their more talented child. If you die heirless, Fergus has a kid.

Yeah but being more talented in combat =/= being better equipped to run Highever.

I think when you speak to him, you give him the line "Lets talk about me" (or something like that) you can get that line plus one about teh Couslands being second to the throne in Ferelden.
Personally I think hes just trying to get into the PC's pants.  There is more to the running of a Teyrnir than martial prowess and while the PC would be educated in that as well, I doubt they would be handing the reins over to him/her when their firstborn is as capable as their youngest in the day to day running of the teyrnir.
Perhaps the PC is being given a chance to 'prove' themselves as they would doubtless be the 'spare' in case anything happens to Fergus (he IS riding off to war after all) and it will be up to PC to ensure Oren gets trained to take over in the event he/she never has any children of their own.

Just looked it up in the toolset. It's a rumor but your parents don't actually say anything about it. He also goes on to talk about how your father is well liked and should've been king. People talking obviously.

This doesn't make it any more/less likely your parents would give you Highever. Just that people preferred you over Fergus...for whatever reason.

The VO notes are him being sincere though and not sucking up.

I said more talented child, not more talented in combat child. No one's telling you they think you might become the heir because you could kick Fergus' ass. And it's just a rumor you hear from one person anyway.

PC: What have you heard about me, exactly?
Dairren: Everyone says that you're more likely to succeed the teyrn than your brother is. That the Cousland line has never been stronger. I don't know about here, but outside your castle, people discuss your family a great deal. Some say your father should have been king instead of Cailan. But it is just talk, I think, borne of affection for your father.

And none of that is actually about how the PC is so much better than Fergus. The only thing they actually get into is your martial prowess. (And that's during your convo with HN mom). You can be downright nasty to everyone you meet, and no one speaks of any acts of leadership or wit that you've shown to make the people think such.

I tire of BW games ego stroking of the PC. no BW I don't want to be the most awesomest and specialist thing eva. It gets really old. -_-

They say that they think you'll inherit instead of Fergus but they don't say it's because you're a better fighter. It might not even happen. I don't think it's Bioware stroking the player's ego so much as Dairren doing it since you kind of asked him to. Maybe you just seem to be the more capable (not just in combat) child. And even if Fergus were the better fighter, Duncan still would have come for you since Fergus is the firstborn married father.

He was sincere. I doubt he was trying to bolster the PC's ego. Just the whole origin was.

How did you ask him to stroke your ego? You asked him what he'd heard about you. That could be good or bad.

Duncan didn't come for the PC. He came for Gilmore. The PC would've been off limits if the attack hadn't happened and Duncan didn't know what Howe was planning. Now he might've preferred the PCbut the reason he was there was Gilmore.

And Duncan went there for the best fighter. And if Fergus had been in your position he would've recruited Fergus instead. Duncan didn't have a choice between the PC/Fergus. Rather a choice between the PC/no one at all.

Nope, he says the PC was always his first choice. But didn't want to force the issue.

Duncan tells the PC (when you are about to be recruited) that it was "in truth you I came for" when you ask about Ser Gilmore.  He also puts in his desire to recruit you at teh very start of the Origin though he doesn't press it because he can't afford to ****** off the second most powerful nobleman in the country.
LOL Ninja'ed by KoPImage IPB

I also get a kick out of that whole conversation.  My FemCousland always flirts with Duncan at the start of the origin and he gets so flustered its cute Image IPB

He came for the PC but wasn't going to get them...? Really?

That first choice always hit me as a "I'd prefer to get X but I'll settle for Y." when there's no chance of getting X.

If Fergus had been the better fighter he would've come for Fergus I suppose...

Still Duncan conscripting the PC would've gone very badly for him if he had done it without Howe's attack. I doubt he planned on actually recruiting the PC.

He wasn't planning on conscripting the PC. He promises Bryce he has no intention of pushing the issue and will settle for Gilmore...until the massacre.

Maybe. Duncan strikes me as pretty ruthless considering he recruited a shleb like Jory who had a pregnant wife back in Highever.  Hell, PC's dad is bled white in the larder and he is all "I wanna make your kid into a GW so I won't bother to help them unless you agree to that."  Granted he can force the issue but at that point I think even Duncan was trying to avoid total assh*lery

Then why go all that way for the PC when he knew the answer was going to be a no?

Storywise it makes more sense that he came for Gilmore liked what he saw with the PC and would've preferred them but didn't push the issue until he saw the perfect opportunity.

Duncan is a bit of a douche. Though forcing the issue when Bryce was fine would've probably turned a lot of nobles against him. In the position he was already in that wouldn't have been wise.

He took Jory because Jory was in a tournament put on by a lord when Duncan came visiting and Jory won. Jory was recruited, not conscripted, because he thought being a Warden would be glorious.

Daveth was conscripted out from the noses of the Denerim guard when he pickpocketed Duncan.

He didn't go "all the way" there.  It is presumed Duncan travels about doing whatever, finding recruits whereever he can find them.  He was in Highever, Bryce knew he was looking for recruits and suggested Gilmore as an 'appeasement' to Duncan to keep him from asking for PC Cousland.  Since he didn't have the means to press for his 'first choice' Duncan was content to see if Gilmore would be as suitable.
I am presuming since Jory was also recruited from Highever, Duncan could have already been in the region.  The tournament is mentioned if you play a Male Cousland (where you discuss meeting Dairren in the melees)

If Duncan had his eye on Jory, he would have conscripted him if recruitment didn't work. Jory is a knight only, not a noble, so the political implications of conscription are much lesser.
