I'm worried about streamlining and simplification. Mass Effect 2 was streamlined significantly and was far worse for it. With so many changes taking place in DA2, I fear this will happen again.

Something minor in regards to immersion:

Will there be ways to interact with clutter within the environment of the game? For example (+ first and foremost) books, i.e. something similar to the Baldur’s Gate /TES/Gothic series – or will the codex cover this in a way similar to what was done in DA:O?

I'm concerned about the emotional depth of relationships with my companions, especially those that are romanceable. I want to feel giddy when things are great, and be like WTF when my partner decides to do something like end the relationship (exactly how I was when Alistair broke up with my elf). I want to FEEL something from my companions. When Carver gets squished by an ogre, I want to feel the anguish of losing my only brother. I think you get the idea.

I think, personally, that this could be addressed by having the wheel options be labeled a little more clearly, because that right there is an example of lack of clarity.  To some (the writer of that particular bit of dialog), "Sigh" means "I'm really effing frustrated right now!" and to some others "sigh" is going to mean "I've resigned myself to the stupidity, just finish your story already."

So, labeling the wheel as "frustrated" or "resigned" instead of "sigh" would be a lot more helpful.  But from what they've talked about, they have done this at least to some extent by including a "tone" marker with the conversation options.

Well seeing that im on the edge of cancelling my preorder because everytime something is leaked / shown i get less and less interested in the game.



So here is my laundry list!



*PC version have not had anything (that i have seen) shown yet. It worry me that it will turn into a ME2. "Lack of graphic options / keybindings (like "space" had 3 things on one button). So yeah the lack of information in general about the PC version.



*Tactics and combat... Well... It looks more and more like a hack and slash. Like one person put it "Some times i just want to button mash my way past content! And now i can do it!" And then someone somewhere said "There are still tactics in the game" yet... if you can just button mash your way past stuff. Why even bother with tactics in the first place?



*The wheel of DOOM and misunderstandings. So here i would like to see lots of fast and small examples on "i pick *SIGH* as a option and thne i want to see how and what the character do. Because when i press "SIGH" i dont want him to yell out "YOU IDIOTS ME KILL U ALL NAOW!"



*The AI i would like to see a video showing the improvments on the AI... In DAO... Enemies and friendly targets was about as clever as a stone. They got stuck on things and on each other.



*PC version... UI, controll, menu, graphic settings and so on.



*That the game is "dumbed" down... Less choices on items, abilities, skills and so on... Not sure how you will prove this O.o

Pretty much this.  I do have a laundry list but Top down camera is at the top of it so I'll go with that.  We've been told top down camera has been pulled out but that you can roughly approximate it.  Can we see this rough approximation in action?  The cynic in me thinks you guys have been avoiding showing it because it's a bad approximation.

I have a pretty lengthy list of concerns, but most of them seem to have already been voiced:

-The graphical redesign seems to have left us with monotonous barren landscapes and uninspiring armor (at the very least)

-Resource allocation to hot-rodded art and a combat overhaul seem to have impacted time to work on content, particularly with a short schedule, so it seems like we are losing game length and breadth compared to Origins.

-The game is going to be releases in 3 months and we've still seen incredibly little of it, yet there's a Signature Edition that seems to encourage us to buy the game sight unseen. It doesn't inspire confidence in the product.



I think those things have kind of already been covered. So my one concern is this:



With such a short timetable, it seems like a good bit of effort and time have gone into adrenalizing the combat system. I felt it 'worked' in DA:O and just needed to build from the capable foundation, refining the effectiveness of the various lines and necessitating a more thoughtful and satisfying approach to combat. Instead, it comes across as though we are getting something very different, akin to a musou. Because it seems like such a departure, I worry that it will be unpolished and at least as flawed in new ways as the original system. I worry that combat is going to feel like a shallow beat 'em up, succeeding at neither the tactical combat DA:O promised, nor the in-depth combat (with combos and intricate play) that a proper slash-em-up demands to hold the player's attention. I worry that, in moving away from a tried and true style of gameplay that Bioware has nailed time and time again in favor of a style they've never really properly pulled off (JE inclusive), there just wasn't enough time to do it justice.



And I don't think it was necessarily a fully intentional decision. I worry that we are getting pretty much the only DA2 that we possibly could have, and that in the end, if it doesn't perform as anticipated, the blame won't properly fall on the people who forced the developers to shift the game into the current format, but on the developers themselves who had no choice but to try to play the cards they'd been dealt.

Jeez, my problem seems pretty petty now considering what kind of hang ups you guys have with the game. I just don't like Facebook exclusive content(because I don't like Facebook) but it's not even that big a deal for me.



Now I feel like I wasted a post because I don't have any real concerns about the game. good job BW?

My Dragon Age 2 Concerns
1. Paraphrase with Dialog Wheel. First off I’m disappointed in Bioware’s apparent attempt at one size fits all for this option going forward. First the ME series, now DA2 and ToR. It can’t be budget issues if ToR is using it as well. Why don’t I think this is a good option? The Wheel is Ebil! Paraphrase has been so far horrible in my book. (Me and Me2 as examples). When I am role-playing a character I want to know what I’m going to say (before I click). I know many like the potluck/surprise me way but I think it’s terrible from a RP standpoint.

2. PC UI- I would like to feel like I am playing a PC game, when I am um…playing a PC game? Back again to Me2 I think it was really bad even compared to me1 which was ported by another company yes? I want many options, I want many hotkeys available, and I want mouse wheel and options to tailor them to my liking if at all possible. The wheel also intrudes on a clean PC like interface. It takes up a lot of room and obstructs the view at times.

3. Companion equipment- I like to be able to “dress up” my companions in whatever I choose for them to wear depending on my play style for that game run. I don’t just go for +stats, many times I like to use what looks good on my character as well as the companions. (Example ancient Elven armor looked great on my pc, Zev and Lel but had lousy stats.) I understand that now the companions all have unique armor for looks and “personality”. I didn’t like it in ME2 and its doubtful I’ll like it here even if I can still choose rings/belts. It’s just a bad idea to limit people in an RPG like this. For those that don’t like the micromanagement they can leave Leliana in her chantry robes the entire game, but it still leaves the option open to others who do not want to see that.

4. PC Tactical camera- There has been many conflicting and changing vague admissions on this. All the way from it was removed in the early days to it’s the same with tweaking to its not the same to we are not sure yet? I don’t know how anyone playing mage or with a mage in party can target aoe’s well without the tactical camera similar to DAO. It’s also nice to pause, draw back on occasion and view the battlefield to plan strategy.

5. New Art direction – I do not like it. The darkspawn all had this cool grimace in DAO and now they look to me at least like undead more than anything else. I’ve said it before but undead lost the appeal long ago with so many undead games/movies out they just are not scary anymore nor unique. The environments that I have seen “leaked” or otherwise also seem very unappealing.

6. Toolset – This really is needed since it’s apparent that it’s popular in retaining and prolonging the life of a game as well as unofficial fixes to things Bioware cannot complete due to console title update limitations. I will be sad panda if the toolset doesn’t get updated for awakenings/da2.

7. class and specialization limited selection – I understand the need to make classes more distinct, however I just don’t think it’s a good idea to limit people in this strict class restrictions that we know about so far. DW warriors could have had some slightly different talents than rogue rather than taking it away entirely. Warriors cannot use range weapons? Why? Are the not weapon masters as well? Again instead of removing it some things could be different for each class. Specializations, well we don’t know much. But there was a preview that talked about the rogue’s and if that’s the only ones they have it isn’t appealing to me. Many of my rogues were archers and Bard + Ranger fit the best. None of these others do anything for that type of class selection. (That we know about so far).

8. The idea that the entire game is narrated by an unreliable narrator worries me. I am not sure how this will play out, it may seem like the game is already done and I’m along just for the ride and the ending…oh it was all a dream creep up on me. Also the game and levels/quests might be more restricted, more compact and linear than normal and I really do not like that. It may turn out this concern is wrong which would be a nice surprise. (For a change.)

9. Human only- I understand many/most? Like humans only as a playable race, I do think it is a step back to not allow multiple races. The dwarves in DAO were the first dwarves I liked to play. (I honestly loved them in DAO) They were awesome. I also think the Dalish were interesting. The city elf origin in DAO was excellent but city elves themselves…meh I really didn’t care for it as a playable selection. Others loved CE but as with anything choices are good. I am guessing other races would not make sense to become champion of Kirkwall, Cornwall or whatever it is. Which is fine as long as other DA games (If any) don’t forget the other races.

10. No word on System specs and DRM for PC version. Yes this worries me greatly.

Horrible class system... reduction to chliches and no freedom in choosing weapons. It ain't getting worse than that what was announced.


Except for that I can't think of anything else that really bothers me. May some  things turn out badly, it can't be told before playing the game, but the class system is plain boring and a huge step backwards in RPG-development.

I'm worried about the environments, mostly. Kirkwall seems so sterile, empty, and unlively. The time when Laidlaw (I think) said that the "extra details" in the world will be skipped over for the sake of tech performance and that the team is going for a more minimalist approach had me even more worried.

Major concern, as already stated by others, is the PC version,

mainly the console port like we got with ME2, horrible control layout, lack of a overhead camera,

static armor for companions(what about their weapons) no toolset(no need for mods if we can't change armor or weapons), etc.

Why change from the more traditional rpg to this h/s hybrid, I love GOW but what's wrong with looting the dead and carry around three times my body weight worth of stuff

This is my primary concern as well.  I understand that the consoles are where you guys put most of the work this time around, and that's great because from what I've read it was needed.  But I'm worried that the changes you're making to accomodate the console will mean crappy game play for the PC this time around.

I know you've said that the versions are being developed side-by-side, but the PC players are getting restless, and I'd hazard a guess that most of the complaining being done on this forum is from PC players terrified that their gameplay is being gutted for the console and casual gamers, whether it's justified or not.
 
So what I'd  really like is to see some PC gameplay footage featuring real combat (not the exagerated combat from the beginning), and conversations.  Preferably before January 11th.

Edited to add - I agree with most of the points that firey Dove made a few post above, everything except points 1 & 9, I don't mind the dialogue wheel and only being able to play as a human.

I realize that Bioware has console customers and that they are an important market. But what has always made your games so much fun and worth the investment for me was the ability to change certain aspects of the game to suit my tastes and play style. Jade Empire was my least favorite game, and got the least play time just because it could not be modded.



I am especially disappointed in the way it was decided to handle companion armor - for me, an important nay central, aspect of the game was to change their look, especially with all the talented modders out there. While I appreciate that Bioware artists and such invest a lot of themselves in the "look" or characters and armor, the reality is that you can't please everyone. Modding allows the PC player to adjust the "look" to suit them.



Don't like the hair options; oh look, someone has created a hair pack.

Don't like a particular LI's face; sure enough, there are 20 different options.

Want to dress your companions more conservativly, more outrageously; fantastic - there is everything from are maille bikinis to classic full plate armor.

Don't like the fantasy style swords; look at these fantastic, historically accurate two-handers, broadswords, and medieval daggers!

Combat too fast or two slow; some bulging forebrain has created a brilliant mod that adjusts to the level you want.



The chance that we might not have these options has made DA2 the first Bioware game I have seriously contemplated not buying. All the other changes are fine because if you let us mod the game, we PC players can change it the way we want. I am very concerned that we will no longer have these options.

Companion outfits.

Not being able to change them is just weak. It was ok in ME2 because it's the future, they can hand-wave the absurdity of going into battle without armour as biotic defences or hardened skin weaves or something. But in fantasy, we know how armour works. We know that going frontlines with a heavy sword and shield in normal clothing is retarded. We like collecting armour and we like customising our characters and seeing that customisation. At least give us like four outfits for each character to choose from.

Without companion outfits we're on a linear journey which will look the same each playthrough, it's just weak.

And yeah, it's a little rude to say but the characters in ME2 looked better. They had far more interesting, defining outfits than the ones we've seen so far. Citing 'they give Oscars for wardrobe design' in an RPG is a weak argument anyway, but when they're as bland as the ones we've seen it's just faintly embarrassing.

If I have to pick just one, I'd say what worries me the most is game length, or to be more precise, the length of one playthrough. I'll elaborate through comparison - a playthrough of Origins would take me at least 70 hours, which means it keeps me entertained for 7 to 9 days. A playthrough of Mass Effect 2 took me around 25 hours, which means it entertained me for two and a half days (which made me glad I only rented the game). Basically, it would be nice if fears about optional quests (among other things) being cut due to short development time and game length suffering as a result could somehow be alleviated. :)

Other than that I'd like to support the people who mentioned PC related concerns, replay value concerns, class concerns and companion outfit related concerns. Thanks for reading. :D

Having just played Fable III, the beginning of that game was incredibly rushed. There was no time to get your bearings. It didn't start arranging right to me until I made my first promise, but then it was too late for me to really care about the world or why I was supposed to be leading a rebellion.

I'm afraid the game will feel too much like "go here, do this" and not slow down, or that the relationships between party members will feel phony because there's only a little bit of time to get to know them over the course of ten years. So while they might be attached to me because we've known each other for a decade, all I can think about is the forced conversations we've been having geared to make me attached to them.

That said, I'm intensely, intensely glad we're going to be warned about the timeskips.


This. I'm also afraid that the time skips might 'skip' too much and cause the entire thing feel rushed and the relationships with party members shallow. I don't know if it'll be possible to demonstrate the time skipping aspect before launch without spoiling too much, but I'd be interested to see how it works in practice.

  • How deep and engaging is the gameplay?
  • Is the game length more than 20 hours?
  • How big are the outdoor areas and is there any streaming technology for managing them?
  • I hope the main story is not as cliched and derived as in DA:O.

I hope that DA2 will kick ass. Thanks to Bioware for keeping the genre alive.

Combat.



I know combat is kind of a big thing to say is my one concern, but it's the truth. I'm concerned the difficulty will be too easy (Nightmare in DA is a joke), that the speed of combat will be too fast (forcing me to pause every couple seconds to keep track of what's going on, instead of only pausing when I saw something bad happening like in DA), that targeting of AoE's will not work well because of the lack of overhead tactical camera, that companions will be less useful because of forced armor and specializations, that the classes will be so restricted that there's no point in replaying as a different class more than once or twice, and finally that the animations are so ludicrous (imo) that I won't be able to stand them.



I managed to enjoy ME/ME2 as action-adventure games because the combat was fun, and I imagine I'll be able to do the same with DA2 if the combat is fun, but I'm very worried that it won't be (or rather, that it'll be fun like Dungeon Siege 3 looks like it will be fun, in that it makes me want to buy a controller to hook up to my PC...which is definitely not what I look forward to in the Dragon Age series.)

I'm worried that DA2 will not deliver on the idea that made origins great, loads of choices.



The story stayed the same in general throughout origins, but the tiny choices of, "Should I kill these werewolves or not" made the game great.
