I'm gonna make some new textures for the toolet, but I can't find a utility that converts .png, .bmp, etc into .dds format.

I'd prefer it to be a FREE piece of software, but around $10-$20 U.S. bucks is doable.  I've tried all of the free licence .dds tools at cnet.downloads.com but they don't have the capability to convert files INTO .dds

Any suggestions?

When you say all the free license tools does that include Nvidia's DDS tools or the GIMP? I believe both of those can do what you're asking. Not certain, mind, but pretty sure.

hey Duck,
ianam
but there's some guy called Bluehair who's made a couple of free DDS programs:
DDS Converter (2.1)
http://eliteforce2.f...Converter;29412
(comments at the bottom of the page are .. interesting;
also, the downloaded file lacks an extension, it's a '.exe' installer)

Instant Texture Viewer (1.0)
http://eliteforce2.f...re_Viewer;25643

nVidia also has some interesting tools:
http://developer.nvi...ture_tools.html

I haven't used any of them, I just did some Google searches for "png to dds"
I'm just gonna install one of the viewers, so i can see the pretty pictures ..

.. a bit later, Bluehair's ITV works good (I'm going with the nVidia stuff tho), so I'll assume his DDS Converter works alright too. It's got good reviews, plenty of downloads, and says it imports & exports DDS, TGA, JPG, BMP, PNG and PSD.

I just tried a SaveAs on a .tga in GIMP, Dno.
- didn't see any .dds option there .. hope that Bluehair knows his stuff.

www.xnview.com/en/xnview.html

One-click image previewing and conversion without ever needing to open an image editor. I couldn't live without it.

Thanks for the replies! I'm currently testing xnview & I'll give the nVidia stuff a look-see when I am done.

I think Paint.NET can also open, save and edit DDS files just like TGAs, BMPs and other formats - and it's totally free, too.

For GIMP you just change the extension and thats the kick. Done deal. But you need the DDS plug in - which is as easy as copy paste.
