Now, I know sincosleep did the DPS comparisons while using the pistols, so I know which has a theoretically higher DPS, but that's not the point of this thread. The question is thus:
In situations where you're NOT just trying to strip the armor from something with ridiculous protection, like Elite Mooks, YMIR mechs, or Tela Vasir, which do you prefer to use, and/or which do you think is better?
Personally, I use the Phalanx for the accuracy with the laser sight, which turns it into a mini-sniper rifle, but I realize the Carnifex has a higher RoF. But the clip on the Carnifex is also painfully small.

Aren't both clip sizes 6 each? and i don't know because while they both have roughly the same damage the phalanx looks cool and has the whole laser sighting thing going for it, not to mention it sounds freaking sweet aswell, my only problem is that its nigh on impossiable to use when targeting fast moving enemies such as Vasir, and the Carnifex actually has a animation where it packs away unlike the phalanx which just stays in its set gun position.
All in all i think it comes down to which one you think looks the best, which in my oppinion is the phalanx however when trying to hit fast moving targets or when your snap shooting then the carnifex is much better.

I use the Phalanx on my Vanguard until I have my bonus weapon usually. It works as a replacement sniper rifle as you said. For general play though, I prefer the Carnifex or the Predator depending on the class. My Widow/Mantis Infiltrators seem to do better with the Predator due to the general lack of overall ammo with the Carnifex.

Personally, if I'm not using it exclusively to armor-strip uber enemies, the only heavy pistol that I can use is the Predator. If I'm whipping it out to take out a YMIR's yellow bar and then afterward I'm switching back to my Shotgun/SMG/Sniper/AR, then the Carnifex has plenty of ammo... but if I'm facing a stream of Loki Mechs (say, on Garrus's LM), then anything other than the Predator is going to run dry at an inopportune moment.

I prefer the Phalanx for superficial reasons. There is no sound in the game more satisfying than that distinctive BLAM BLAM BLAM.
Gameplay-wise, it's difficult to really say. Each of the three has their merits, but each excels in a specific situation.

Like the phalanx mainly for vanity reasons, have long loathed the Carnifex design.
It's been good for damage but has too slow a RoF, while the Predator is reversed so, can't really make up mind as I rarely have to take the pistol out

Meh, I like Carnifex for aesthetic reasons, but I almost always use the Predator over the other two anyway, so, don't mind me!

Personally, I prefer the Predator, because it is accurate and has a large ammo capacity. The only problem with the Predator, that it causes not so much damage. But it can be compansated with Adrenaline Rush and headshots.
The Carnifex and the Phanalx are used by my squad members.

Do people use heavy pistols much? Most of the time I just stick with the SMG (Locust is gettable straight away), AR and/or sniper rifle, as appropriate.

If you play as an Engineer/Adept/Sentinel you must use heavy pistols until you get the bonus weapon (I think the assault rife is the best choice), if you want to survive on higher difficulties.
For example: last time my characther was a Sentinel, and I used the SMG to weaken the heavy mech's shields, and the heavy pistol to take out its armor.

Ah. The only classes I've played on hardcore and insanity are soldier and infiltrator, so I haven't had much experience in using pistols.

Yeah, the soldier really does not need pistols, only when you are out of ammo. I never played as an Infiltrator, but I think an Infiltrator can take a good use of heavy pistols, because they are more effective in close range combat than the sniper rifles.

I used the Phalanx almost exclusively with my Adept, until I got AR training. Even then, I still used the Phalanx, just less often. You could literally go through the entire game with that gun alone; it's such a beast.

I'd take Carnifex over Phalanx. But I prefer Predator over these two anyway.

I don't like the Phalanx. It is OK for squadmates, because they never run out of ammo.

I prefer the Phalanx for sentinal and adept. Mainly though I just like the laser sight and the sound. I generally avoid using pistols for rpg reasons, I think all the pistols are too good...

The laser only works in low-lighted areas (like Omega or Ilium). It's very difficult to us it in sunlight, like on Horizon.

I like to use the Carnifex for more aggressive, in-your-face gameplay due to the higher RoF and I think it feels better if you need to hipfire it too. The Phalanx however is lovely for a more cautious gameplay due to it's accuracy and larger amount of ammunition.
But I seriously love the feel, sound and look of the Phalanx. It's simply satisfying taking down any enemy in the game with that facebreaker of a gun.

I love the Phalanx. I dont even touch the Predator or the Carnifex. I put the Carnifex on squaddies, though. Phalanx is perfect for sniping if you dont have an actual Sniper Rifle. The slow RoF is easy to work around, and 2 or 3 headshots is usually enough to take down most low-rank enemies.

I actually like both weapons.... but the sniper scope on the phalanx just beats the other IMO

I use the Phalanx primarily as a sniper rifle replacement for classes that don't have it. I actually don't like using it for the very stupid reason that it doesn't collapse down when not being used and it looks stupid hanging at my hip on full size.
