Mine must be updated.

******huge spoiler ahead******

I sided with the Order of The flaming Rose in The Witcher for my second playthrough. Toruviel, my beloved elf (one I bedded in my first playthrough) gets gang raped and hanged as a result of my actions. It was pretty shocking. I expected to see her in the next chapter, scolding me for my betrayal. Never even got the chance.

Red Dead Redemption almost had me in tears... Build up this character for several missions get me to care about him make me think there's a happy ending (I actually thought getting back to the family was the end) Give me boring tutorial like missions for the end then BAM!

that ending will resonate with me for years to come.

Yup I'm gonna go with this one.

But you really thought there was gonna be a happy ending!?!?! As soon as the game obviously continued storywise, I knew it wasn't over. Didn't know it was gonna be THAT over. I think it was pretty clever of them to kinda hide the true ending. Sweet sweet revenge.

Oh yeah... going evil and killing the blue chick with the wookie in KOTOR was horribly depressing. Christ, I could never play an evil character agian after that!

First off all Final Fantasy VII, I must have been about ten when I first played it... That one death made me into the gamer I am today.

Final Fantasy X I didn't really find that sad, it should have been sad but the only word I can think of for describing how I felt is pride. The characters were all based around deaths, but the way they all faced their fates and fought just took away the sadness and gave defiance. I really liked it but I wouldn't say sad.

Metal Gear Solid 4: That is how you end a game. The characters all got the endings they deserved (Ok Otacon still gets screwed over) That final scene between snake and big boss was amazing.

Heavy Rain: Get some of the bad endings to see the absolute destruction of a human being. If you want to see believable suffering then this is where you find it.

Shadow of the Colossus: Seriously the entire game is going down a depressing path which you know will end badly (for your character that is, the ending itself is amazing). You go round killing these amazing and beautiful creatures in order to fill a pact with a dark being. You see darkness literally filling your character each time you kill a Colossi, your faithful horse sacrifices itself to get you over a gap and you know that what you are doing is helping a almost certainly evil force. But you know that the character is doing it because it's the only way to save the person he loves. This game is a beautiful amazing tragedy. I'd say the entire game is the saddest moment in gaming.

Two have already been named: The end of Red Dead Redemption (mine was a *paragon* John Marston, he didn't deserve that fate!!!), and 'Shadow of the Colossus - words can't begin to describe my feelings during that game.

There's one I have to mention, though, since it was my first encounter with a tragic gaming moment. It's a scene from 'Final Fantasy Adventure' (also known as 'Mystic Quest') on the Gameboy - I know noone's ever heard of this game, and I don't blame them^^ It's basically a scene where you are saved by your companion from a collapsing ruin, only to find out that said companion doesn't have the power to follow you and thus dies before your eyes. As a kid, I was really and truly crushed and in tears... -.-

Red Dead Redemption - John Marston's death was by far the saddest moment I've ever encountered in a game. Even gunning down Agent Ross wouldn't make things better. By the time Dead Man's Gun was playing in the credits I was bawling.

Baldur's Gate 2 - Discovering Khalid's body. Poor Jaheira. Finding her husband's body was not something she should have endured.

Grand Theft Auto IV -  The Deal ending. Roman being gunned down at his own wedding was pretty shocking and by far a greater blow to Niko than Kate's death in the Revenge ending. I mean Kate's death was pretty sad but Roman's death was a very dark in comparison.

Dragon Age Origins - Sacrifice ending. The funeral for the Warden was pretty much a lump in the throat moment for all involved. Get's especially bittersweet when it's a female Warden who romanced Alistair. His last words are especially haunting: "You will be missed, more than I can say".

Jade Empire - Killing the Water Dragon. Yeah, it's the Open Palm decision. Doesn't make it any easier though, watching this magnificent creature die for all our sins against it. Epic. When are you going to make a sequel Bioware?!

Prince of Persia 2008 - The ending. Elika sacrificing herself so that Ahriman could be imprisoned once more is pretty sad to be sure. But the Prince freeing him so that she can live again is even more wrenching. Also gets my vote for one the greatest endings in a videogame.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - The ending. Gabriel has defeated Satan and freed all the lost souls denied Heaven. But Marie his wife, cannot be brought back to life as he had hoped. And despite his pleas for her to stay, Marie passes on. Made even more sad if you've watched the epilogue.

Mass Effect - Vigil. Finding the last remnant of the Protheans legacy is a pretty teary moment. Hearing him recount how the Reapers systematically wipe out their race is pretty haunting . Get double points for the sublime Vigil theme that's played in the background.

Mass Effect 2 - The Overlord Ending. Admit it. Even the most hardened Renegade among you were pretty appalled by David Archer's fate.

Final Fantasy X - The ending had me in tears. Auron saying goodbye and then becoming wisps of light was so sad. I was already a crying mess and then Yuna goes and tells Tidus that she loves him just before he has to leave. I went through so much tissue. :crying:

Dragon Age: Origins - Doing the Ultimate Sacrifice for the first time when in a relationship with Alistair. I didn't know that he wouldn't let me make the killing blow to the archdemon, so I brought him with me. I couldn't believe that he was willing to die just so that I(and Thedas) could live. Image IPB The writers really outdid themselves with this game.

Mass Effect 2 - Kaiden turning away from my Shepard was horrible. I was so sure he would join my team and help with the Collectors...dang him. :crying:

I had shivers there. Not even the paragon interrupt helped.

Dragon Age: Romanced Morrigan leaving after the battle. Even if I had an everybody lives ending and it seemed friendship with Alistair could be mended to a point, I felt really bad the rest of the day.

Mass Effect 1: "From the Wreckage", no matter how many times I play that moment, I always feel sad when it seems Shepard didn´t make it.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time: The ending. As the dark prince said, save the world, lose the girl. Thankfully The Two Thrones fixed it.

My saddest moments in gaming don't come from actual game content. Rather they come from buying a game that is hyped to be great; that I've waited a long time for only to realize it was a big let down. :-(

hm the very first time I actually felt sad in a game....I was a kid, maybe 9 or 10 years old. My brother and I were playing Phantasy Star 4 on the Sega Genesis.

The part were Alys died got us, especially me because I loved her so much as a character. She was something new, different and inspiring compared to all the other 2D game divas in early/mid 90's. We always held out hope that she would come back. When we beat the game and found out that she didn't we replayed it and power leveled the characters to level 50 or 60 and literally got *all* the skills and spells in the first part of the game that should have only taken oh...a couple hours to get through, to see if the storyline would change because we had better healing abilities, lol. Sadly, that was not the case.

On a little weaker note, there was also Dragon Warrior/Quest 7. I was a little upset when Kiefer, your BFF since early childhood, leaves you for an NPC, "because she's hot". Dude, bros before hos, c'mon! I kept his stuff for the first 60 hours of that game (you can easily clock over 200 hours in that game and still complete everything) only to finally give in and sell the junk because I accepted he wouldn't come back. The ending of the game kinda had me choking up though, if anyone here has played it and finished it.

Deus Ex Invisible War. Probably the most disappointing sequel ever.

I installed this, and fired it up in a fever of anticipation. Which immediately turned to dismay and horror. I uninstalled, and dumped it in the cupboard.

http://www.visualwal...nvisiblewar.htm

Then I read the above, re-installed, and gave it another go. I set myself the restriction that I could not kill humans (or allow them to be killed), although bots and greasels were fair game. I'm afraid half way through the game I extended this to include Templar paladins and Illuminati elite, because the silly buggers explode if you neutralise them. I probably should have stealthed past them, but that would have been hard work. Perhaps in a year or two ...

And Thomas Angelo's death in Mafia 1/2 by the hand of Joe Barbaro and Vitto Scaletta.

Out of some of the games I've played (spoilers):

Final Fantasy X ending- That left me in absolute tears. Damn it, they should have left Sin alive if it meant that would happen.

Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, 3, 4 & Portable Ops- MGS had Meryl's death scene, and since I am terrible at the torture scene I am always unfortunate to get it. And Sniper Wolf's death, that was sad.
MGS2 had Olga, Fortune and E.E's deaths. As if I didn't feel bad enough after Otacon and E.E's moment, up comes Olga and Fortune.
MGS4 left me feeling very remorseful over the end of Snakes story, "Here's To You" really helped make the mood for me.
Portable Ops had Elisa/Ursula's death and "Calling To the Night". I find Elisa's death and her vision heartwrenching considering what will happen later in the timeline, and "Calling to the Night" leaves me all teary-eyed. It always makes me think about all the soldiers that fought in wars. I always play it on Remembrance Day, perfect time to play it.
MGS3 on the other hand left me outright crying for a whole ten minutes. EVA's speech about The Boss was just heart wrenching for me. "Way To Fall" made me feel even sadder because it fits it so perfectly with The Boss and Big Boss.
Half Life 2: Episode 2- Eli, why did it have to be you? :crying:

Max Payne- The whole back story. Poor, poor Max. Straight away I have to feel sorry for him. Not to mention when you find out that his close friend betrayed him.

Oddly enough though it seems that compared to everyone else, Red Dead Redemption's ending didn't make me sad. Instead it made me very, VERY angry. My Marston was a good Marston and yet that pudgy agent goes and does that!? It was so satisfying when Jack blew his brains out.

I'm actually surprised a lot of people are saying FFX. Has no one seen the movie Ghost? The one with Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze and Whoopie Goldberg?

The ending was a rip off of that. =/

Dude, that was the whole point. Jack Marston blowing away Edgar Ross was the last thing John wanted for his son. The whole game John Marston wanted nothing more than to walk away from his violent past with a clean slate and raise his family in peace. But Ross took that dream from him along with his life. And as a consequence Jack took on the violent road his father once walked to get his revenge.

The hero is dead and his dream is in ruins. What can be sadder than that?

Leaving Kakariko Village in Ocarina of Time. The face that Saria makes before Link turns his back was heartcrushing to me, the first time I played it. There are propably more, but this one was the first game that evoked some sort of emotion/sadness in me, thus it's more memorable.

Yes - OoT definitely had me blinking back tears a few times. Mostly I remember the cutscene wherein Link enters the glade and sees the tree-stump where Saria had sat - now empty.  Those cartoony graphics were weirdly powerful.

"The deal" ending from GTA 4. I think the game was purposely trying to make things as dark as possible, the last mission and the epilogue took place during a thunderstorm.
