To make your explosions just a little better, you can script in a quick fade to black and then fade from black. Use the code for white for the function, that way the whole screen flashes white for just an instant. (can't remember the number, but it's in the "ga_fade_to_black" script if you need to reference). If you fade the screen to white for about .5 seconds, it adds a nice effect at the end of a big explosion.
Sunjammer's visual effects browser is very useful to find the effect that best tickles your fancy.
Making explosions a little more awesome.

Yes that's a good idea. If you throw in a knockdown animation as well and some smoke visual effects afterward, that'll add to the impression.

Cool. I'm envisioning a typical encounter unfolding so:
**BOOM**
Server: "You are on the floor staring at the ceiling. Your ears are ringing. You are stunned for 4 rounds."
Player: WHAT!?!?!?! Damn it!!!
Party: Nice job dumb ass!! You just rang the dinner bell.
DM: Summon Pit Fiend.
**BOOM**
