My opinion on Lt. Jacob Taylor constantly changes with each Shepard I play, but most of them find him to be an OK guy. He strikes me as a very difficult character to hate, even if you don't care greatly for him. But some people really dislike him for some reason, and this isn't just a feeling I get. The two major character polls I've run into have supported this.

XX55XX's Character Survey 5.0 shows that his average rating out of 10 is 4.3. No other squadmate besides Morinth(3.3) was below 5.8 and in Major Truth's ME survey(Page 8, question 26), nearly half of the poeple who answered gave him a below average rating.

I've heard the various reasons why people dislike Jacob (his dialogue is bad, he's boring, his storyline is bland, etc.). But what I've been wondering is what could be done to rectify this.

Just what would it take for those who dislike Jacob to change their opinion on him? I'm not saying that Jacob is like Lebron James, but every time I see people bashing him on the forums, I see him on a TV screen asking "What should I do?"

So...What should he do? What do you think it would take for Jacob Taylor to no longer be such a disliked character?

I personaly would have liked it to see him interact with his son...you know...show some emotions. I think it worked well with Thane and made the character more likable...something like that would have worked or would work for Jacob too...however it may would have been to much family hick hack in Me2 then.

Okay, someone needs to make a video of Jacob using the audio from that Lebron commercial.

Making Jacob, better? I don't know. I thought he was pretty alright. Hmm, maybe have him try to pursue Miranda again? We know there's some history there, but it's only very briefly touched upon. This could allow for more scenes showing Jacob having to open up rather than being his usual stoic self, or at the very least just give us more to see of him. It'd be pretty interesting to see Jacob as a romantic rival for Shep when it comes to Miranda's affections, should you choose to romance her.

All the main characters are very underdeveloped in Mass Effect 2 as it is. We needed more scenes of them acting like people, rather than them simply telling their histories and then clamming up.

Well, it'd be a start if BioWare would not have FemShep act like a cat in heat around him.

Agree with Mike, Maybe have the intitial squadmates like Kasumi and talk about things on the ship. One thing i've noticed is that alot of Femshep players don't like Jacob basedon how Jen Hale dialogue sounds when she's talking to him, she's either flirting with him with paragon dialogue or just being outright ****y to him with renegade dialouge. Jacob's writing could use some fixes (mainly a certain line from the paramour scene that's become a meme) They had the chance to fix Jacob with him LoTSB dosier but all they put in was him working out, his workout routine, and his last contact with him father before the gernsback went missing. obviously the writers don't care about Jacob.

Yes, besides the awful sounding FemShep dialog, Jacob's OK in my books.

I didn't have a problem with Jacob - I started out romancing him, but for Thane eventually. Still, Jacob is the only one who ever asks Shepard how she feels - and means it. I also liked how easily he slipped into bro territory - no hard feelings. I can forgive a little bad writing, because he's a good soldier, leader, and friend.

I actually like Jacob so the only thing I would've change is just Taylor opening up to the player some more. That and replace his pistol with an Assault Rifle. I know he was more straigtlaced, so it would be cool to hear him recount some of his earlier work with the Corsairs or his dealings with Cerberus.

For a start they could make him use assault rifles and actually look interesting like in Mass Effect Galaxy. And also make him less critical. Seriously, Thane is incredibly polite, and dying of a terminal disease. The last thing he needs is Jacob randomly insulting him.

Well considering they're going on a suicide mission, I think it's understandable that Jacob voices worries over trusting an assassin with his life.

Well he doesn't have to be a dick about it. Even Ashley is fairly civilised with her racism. At least compared to Jacob randomly outbursting.

Even if Bioware give him decent dialogue for ME3 that wont be enough to redeem him from the mess that was in ME2. Its going to be very hard for me (and a lot of people) to take Jacob seriously again.

I liked Jacob until the "pissing yourself in dark pants line". Then when you try to talk to him and get the "Already, I don't like forcing these talks" response. Too much attitude and not in a good way. I was impressed that his father's ship was named after the guy generally considered the "father of science fiction" and who the Hugo award was named for. Jacob got a little cooler for being peripherally associated with that.

Tali had a similar outburst towards Jacob. I'm not saying Jacob wasn't rude, but he had every right to voice his insecurities in someone, especially when a mission like this requires that everyone to get along.

Oh, and Ash isn't even close to being a racist.

Jacob really isn't a 'randomly outbursting' kind of guy.

One thing that bothered me is how they set up all these conflict for Jacob to have. The alliance, Cerberus, Thane etc. But almost nothing is done about it, he even seemed completely indiffrent to what his father did after the mission.

But if I had to make a list about things to change about Jacob.

1: Have him deal with some of his issues and not just mention them.

2: Have him say a less rude "I don't have any available dialog now, please check again later."

3: Have him say less stupid lines like "I don't think assiting Garrus is a good idea", "Let's sell the Geth", "Let me into the ventalation shaft".

4: Everything romance related. I don't think I rolled my eyes at something that much ever since I had that demonic possesion 10 years ago.

Cookie for refrence.

Well turning off auto flirt and making his romance less like a badly written porno would be a big help.

Also I’m not sure if he is meant to come off as unfriendly but he does. It’s weird I get this mix of honest, decent guy and passive aggressive ass vibes from him. I suppose he’s meant to come across as straight talking an “intense” but something always seems off in they way he talks. Nothing he says is openly hostile and he never really says anything particularly dickish when compared with what others say but allot of what he says just has a bit of a hostile or arrogant tone to it witch makes me really want to deck him. Yet I don't feel that way when Jack or Zaeed are being ****s
“I’m not a big fan of forcing these talks” “ahhh we covered this already didn’t we?” “you want to get friendly with everyone that’s your business” ect

I didn't have too much issue with Jacob as much as I couldn't stand the way FemShep was so skeezy around him! I mean, UGH! I hated talking to him for fear of what would come out of her mouth. It was just... wrong.

As for his attitude, well, if I can put up with 'tudes from Jack, Zaeed, etc, then I can handle Mr. Taylor's just fine. :-)

I hope your joking about Ash lol. She basically goes up to you and says "I hate all the aliens on this ship, something about dogs and bears, etc. etc. As for Tali, at least she just had an evil stare thing going on, and not shouting at a guy with space cancer.

No she says she isn't comfortable with Aliens having free rein on a military ship, there is a big difference. She doesn’t want Aliens having free rein on a military ship because they could use the opportunity to gather Intel on the alliance military and tech which could bite the alliance in the ass if they ever went to war. She thinks that the alliance shouldn’t count on allies staying allies and that is understandable. The comment on bears and dogs was more about levels of association. If you had the choice between saving a member of your own family or a complete stranger who would you pick? Most would pick their faimly (assuming there were no other factors, same age same gender, same effort in saving them). Do you care more about what happens in your city or another city? Your country or another country? Eventually you end up with do you care more about your species or another? Even if you treat other species like equals if given the choice to try and save your own species or leave your species to die to help another most would pick their own. I suppose you could still call that 'racism' but its reasonable racism that pretty much everyone has to varying degrees.

That said I do think Ash was racist but she wasn’t that bad and people make too much of a big deal about it. Nothing like say what those Terra Firma protestors were like.

I'd just like to interject once more and say that the scene with Jacob and Tali was really funny. I've seen people really harp on Jacob because of that, calling him "insensitive" and other inaccurate things. He was taking the ******, when Tali was being very hostile. Made me laugh.

Jacob could be very witty and insightful, and he was always pretty straight forward with Shep, which made him pretty cool in my books. I think they were trying to make him more reserved, and introverted (Although at the same time had an air of cockyness about him, kind of a mix between Kaiden and Han Solo) and in a game where we get most of our character development from one-on-one conversation that can cause problems.

Jacob doesn't need salvaging, he just needs more opportunities to show his character that dont involve just a straight conversation with Shep. By that I mean doing things rather than saying them. That's the problem with Mass Effect 2 and most Bioware games in general, I think. When they're not in a fight or talking to the player character, the squad-mates are usually completely static.

Edit: Also of course Ash isn't a racist. That's just being ignorant.
