If you feel your tank build might be the problem, you can use one of the respec mods here:  www.dragonagenexus.com/downloads/search.php .  They will allow you to reassign all attribute, skill and talent points so that you have a more effective companion.  You might also consider the Dog as a fifth party member mod.  This mod means that Dog acts like a Ranger's summoned pet.  With plenty of points in Strength and Dexterity and a few in Constitution, Dog is an excellent tank and the fastest of your party members in combat.  As I've always said, "No fair!  Four legs are faster than two!".

Let me add one more thing.  Health poultices and lyrium potions need to be the best you can afford to make.  The further into the game you get, the better they need to be.  Those little one bundle of elfroot and one flask potions simply don't do enough once you get past about level six or seven.  Your mage needs to be able to make at least third tier potions to make late game play easier.

Wynne also has regeneration. That is an assist to heal. But my tank still uses potions in really tough fights. I set the tank's tactics with a drink health potion. During the later part of the game, a 'lesser' health potion is trivial. I choose a greater potion. There's just too much health to restore.

You gotta improve your tactics instead of being lame and become a cheap cheater, that's all that there is.

Tank runs in, uses Taunt, Healer uses Shield on the tank, Mage throws AoE spells like there was no tomorrow.

Enemies dead.

It's really that simple.

And on a further note, healing is overpowered as hell since the cooldown is way too low. You can even heal 2 targets at the same time plus Rejuvenate plus Group Heal plus that life-saver-thing etc.
