I palyed SOZ back when it first came out, but got so frustrated w/ the number of random Monster fights, I stopped playing about 1/2 way through. I also lost track and intrest in the main plot. Have any changes been made to SOZ to make it worth another try? ( I know the decision is ultimately up to me, but I would honestly like to read palyers' opinions).Thanks.

Thankfully on my first run through, I followed a party set up guide on a website, which made my SOZ playthrough enjoyable as I didn't have to deal with so many fights. What you need is a Ranger/Rogue party leader as the character you're going to use in the Overland map. Give him all the Rogue skills(disable device, open lock, hide, etc.) and skills like spot and survival(helps move quicker on the map). It would help if you had another character or the same with a high diplomacy skill rank as if you can't avoid an encounter, you can bribe them.

If your lead character has good Hide skill, you hardly ever have to fight the random encounters (also buy the +Hide items when you first arrive in Samarach). It's as simple as that.

I'm wondering though, does it HAVE to be your lead character? Some skills that my other party members have often come into play when I'm going around with my main character. Skills like craft alchemy and so on. I tried switching characters for the overland and it switched to their skills. Like my warlock, who had rubbish survival and hide skills moved through the map really slowly and got caught by every monster.

I'm guessing having your overland character not as the main character would still work if you use him as the overland navigator right?

The character who leads on the overland map need not be your main PC. The skills of the leader will be used. There are also mods available to alter the frequency of the overland map encounters.

Indeed.  But even without the mods, the patch lowered the frequency significantly.

I used this:  "SoZ Overland Encounter Reducer (v1.0)" from the vault.

http://nwvault.ign.c...s.Detail&id=250

It comes with files that lowers the probability of an encounter to 50%, 33%, or 0% of normal.  I did play SOZ before the 1.23 patch, so, I'm not sure how much better the default is than the original level.  I used the 33% file and thought it was perfect.  My ECL+2 PC did take a hit on XP by the end of the game.

It doesn't HAVE to be your main character. It is advisable though. Sometimes, especially during area/OM transitioning, the game will switch control to the default, main character. By the time the games finishes loading the transition it may already be too late to prevent an encounter if a spawn was/has been spawned near you. By having the "scout" as your main char you prevent this from happening.

I really find all the encounter reduction mods useless. If people played the game as intended, they would never need such a thing.

Exactly. If you can hide, you can choose your encounters. No need for mods.

I have played SOZ through many times.  Enjoyably!

The trading anoys me so I played it up to when I first meet sasani, changed the wagon to allow 999, and added enough of everything to handle all of the create-trading-post's and do that wierd guy that wants one of everything in Blacklake. and saved that one, and always start from there - so I miss the shipwreck, but that's about it.

I also never get involved in any of the situations that I encounter while wandering around, since they are basically all the same.

I also never take any additional members to my party of 4 as they seem to always get killed.

I also, now, do not do the nexus thing, and also do not do the search for merchant (Volo) thing.

I do establish all the trading posts and so wind up doing the complete Port Last thing.

So the game is playing the sasani thread and the circle of friends thread.  When sasani splits I go through the temple and up to the snake villa and whack away.

This makes it rather interesting and it moves right along, and I still have fun with all the tiny quests of Kelgar and Sa'sani, etc.

;)
