I haven't heard anyone mention getting started on Ultima I though... am I really the oldest person here? :)

Ultima? That's for the youngsters!
Seriously I started with Wizardry 1, so I think your Ultima beats me by a year or so... old man!  ;)

...  because you couldn't judge AoE on spells or (worse) pathing easily.  After the fourth time a character got murdered because I clicked for them to go straight through what looked like a perfectly good gap between two critters and they sprinted off and ran halfway across the room, incurring half a dozen AoO's, I got fed up.  If I can't tell EXACTLY what square a character is standing in and EXACTLY where they're going to move when I click, forget it.  I do NOT want to be fighting with the computer over what gets done when in a tactical game.

You sure we're remember the same ToEE?

My fireball spells, when I was looking for a place to target them, highlighted the creatures that were inside their area of effect, and even put a number above their heads.  Hitting my own people was never a problem in that regard for me.

Pathing could be a bit of a problem, IIRC (outside of combat, particularly in Hommlet if you dared venture off the roads going through town), but I also remember there being "paths" laid down on the screen from my character to the place I was sending him, and little "x"s if that path happened to go within some enemy creature's range, so I knew exactly when I'd be getting AoOd.

PoR2, on the other hand... that one I'm not sure about.  I know I got AoOd a lot in that one.

Still, I understand the concern.  Accuracy is much more of an issue in tactical games, and grids can certainly help with that.   But accuracy and speed are two different things.

Hmmm... I think I'm going to have to find my ToEE disks.  Now you've got me wondering whether I'm  not getting my game features mixed up. :)  The joys of old age, I suppose...

Edit:   ToEE did give you info about where you character was going to go if  you clicked on a particular spot, as well as if it would (or wouldn't) provoke an attack of opportunity along the way.  And spells also show the AoE.

I've put a couple screenshots up in my profile if you want to take a look.

No Wizard's Crown? I love me some Wizard's Crown. Controlling 8 characters in a turn base setting. I could sit there all day trying to strategize how to proceed in certain situations. Certainly you can try and progress in a part you shouldn't be in, but that was up to you. I love tweaking the characters inventory. Deciding who should wear what. I even had my favorite characters.

I played a lot of those games back in the days. The first ones I put a lot of time and effort into, were the Eye of the Beholder series, especially number 2, I think.

A few months ago i downloaded them all off abandonmania( or something like that)one of those retro games sites. They were free(and legal) and work on windows 7 rc1 (64) via dos box.The memories of the early nineties -great games .Whilst the graphics arent there the playability was and still is!!! check them out whilst your waiting for Origins. :)

Loved the SSI Gold Box series of games, especially Pool of Radiance.

The attack on Sokal Keep was awesome. Failed quite a few times. I remeber debating whether to put some of the orcs and hobogoblins to sleep, or try to charm a couple to add to my ranks.

I miss the challenge of those games. Having to try different tactics for tough combats. Before we had walkthroughs and cheats. Ultima IV was truly epic. I don't think I ever really achieved Avatar status, not because of my lack of morals, I was a pillar of virtue in Britannia. I just couldn't figure out how to end the game.......anyone remember?

Man I loved the Bard's Tale trilogy, Wizardry, Ultima, Gold Box series (though I found that SSI's games got worse and worse with every one they made)

Then the mid 90s hit and it seemed the CRPG was dead replaced by endless DOOM clones and then came along Fallout and suddenly the good times were here again.

I think my favorite quote in that whole series of articles was the very last line: "Like Pool of Radiance, Baldur’s Gate, or Fallout, the next big CRPG won’t be so much about doing something new, but doing something right."

Dang straight that is exactly what Dragon Age is going to do.
