For default default Sheppard, yeah, I'd say some ghetto part of Canada. Background says he was part of a gang.

I always imagine London, Dublin, or New York as my Shepard's former home. I imagine Grand Central or a similarly large place being converted into a spaceport, with gritty and battle-worn, old style architecture and the new era of technology mingling.

I think its you decide where. What about spacer or colonist? Sheps not born on earth yet has a canadian accent(?). Plus I'm sick and tired of the most badass heroes always being born in America, being american and generally "the world, now space sux ass and licks americas ballz".

Earthborn male Shepard strikes me as coming from New York. But think futuristic New York, like the huge city in The Fifth Element, or the ground level on Coruscant like in Star Wars Episode II.

paragon earth shepard was created with the idea that he represented the heart of the human race at its best. being american and from kansas the heartland of america, i always pictured my character being from kansas. the way the background story reads, hes from the inner city of somewhere on earth. could be kansas city

FemShep sounds oddly Texan so yeah, I think FemShep is Texan. I don't like the idea either but the accent says it all.
MaleShep however is probably from Canada. Again, the accent.

And that's why I choose Colonist lol. Even though I still like to think my Shepard is Tim Burton's great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great (keep saying great for another few hours) grandson; henceforth my Shepard finds his descents from California.

That's only a necessary element if he/she is biotic. Obviously, if you're playing Soldier Shepard, he/she doesn't need to have been exposed to eezo, so could have been born anywhere.

E-zero exposure could happen under or at any given city for any number of reasons. The limiter of Shepard's location is 'the slums of a big city', which really just means most any major city anywhere.
