There are still characters (some of them party members) that we have yet to announce, who you haven't seen the slightest hint of yet. And some of the ones we have announced probably don't fulfill the role some of you seem to assume they do.

A character being rabidly disliked is, to me, just as successful as one that is enormously popular-- which Alistair is, actually. My comment was that a lot of people look only at the surface, whereas a great many of our characters are enjoyable more because of their personality and their plot than how unique their appearance is.

They're not going to be universally appealing. Tell me which character could be and I'll let you write the next one-- it doesn't happen. Aveline will be liked by some, disliked by others. Some will think she's pretty, some will think she's ugly. That's nothing new.

So why do we have to stick with non-customizable looks on companions again?

Because how customizeable a companion is doesn't make them any more enjoyable, either. Your PC gets to be the special snowflake in that regard.

But you already knew that and decided to misinterpret what I said to be deliberately obtuse, I'm sure.

Saying that a hated character is a success just because people are passionate about it just seems like grasping for straws to make you feel better. If there is a character that is half loved and half hated, sure, it could be a good character. If there's one that everyone hates, (and not in a love to hate sort of way), just accept it and do better. Don't rationalize a screw up.

Do we have any characters that are universally hated? None that I've seen. Hence I've nothing to rationalize.

I was referring to the number of companions only. We've never said boo about Varric as a love interest, nor how many there would be-- nor will I.
