Because how customizeable a companion is doesn't make them any more enjoyable, either. Your PC gets to be the special snowflake in that regard.

Saying that a hated character is a success just because people are passionate about it just seems like grasping for straws to make you feel better. If there is a character that is half loved and half hated, sure, it could be a good character. If there's one that everyone hates, (and not in a love to hate sort of way), just accept it and do better. Don't rationalize a screw up.
Do we have any characters that are
universally hated? None that I've seen. Hence I've nothing to rationalize.
