I hope that at least one of either Bethany, Carver, or Aveline will end up being permanent, and who, depends on our actions at the beginning.

I personally think (and hope) that Bethany will be permanent but this is obviously just speculation and wishful thinking on my part.

I think that there is a possibility that Anders will appear, maybe just a cameo though. I went through an Awakening epilogue today which said that after Anders left the Wardens he joined the crew of a familiar pirate woman. The only familiar pirate is Isabela.

I'm a bit surprised there is immediate assumption by a good amount of people there were only be 6 companions in the game. The word was there was going to be At Least (key phrase) two members of each class. Doesn't "At Least" suggest there is bound to be more then 2 of one class? Maybe say the mage class will consist of two, and maybe there'll be just two rogues as well, but then if there was only going to be 2 to a single class why use the phrase "At Least." Seems to me in a ten year campaign you'd pick up more then 6 people willing to fight for you.

And to add on the last thought, If we assumed you had two family members filling the spot, I'd find even less likely Hawke who leads a land only gets 4 people to join him not related too him. So I think we can look forward to maybe 10 companions, which if I'm not mistaken is the total number possible (including DLC) that you get in ME:2 so I'm thinking probably 8-10 again. If you're taking them by their word.

A character being rabidly disliked is, to me, just as successful as one that is enormously popular-- which Alistair is, actually. My comment was that a lot of people look only at the surface, whereas a great many of our characters are enjoyable more because of their personality and their plot than how unique their appearance is.

So why do we have to stick with non-customizable looks on companions again?

An example of a rabidly disliked character that I would not qualify as successful:

Jar Jar Binks

Saying that a hated character is a success just because people are passionate about it just seems like grasping for straws to make you feel better. If there is a character that is half loved and half hated, sure, it could be a good character. If there's one that everyone hates, (and not in a love to hate sort of way), just accept it and do better. Don't rationalize a screw up.

Some time ago the Bioware store started selling shirts with a splatter dragon motive. Inside the shape of the dragon you can  see seven humanoid shapes. The woman in the middle could be Aveline, the shape right from her Varric and the one on the far right Isabela. This implies that we will get seven permanent characters plus one additional as DLC (either for everyone or just for preorders).
ME2 had 10 companions on disk, one as free DLC and one as payed DLC. Having twelve companions resulted in very little interaction between the companions themselves and also in little interaction between Sheppard and the companions, so I really hope the number of companions in DA2 is smaller than in ME2.

That's a pretty good point, It's always nice to have more depth to a npc. Though based on the evidence given my figure was accurate. Always nice to know you are good at taking educated guesses. Still I think 7 is a pretty fair number for characters and such, I find it highly unlikely they'd leave out the core races so it leaves room to make everyone happy.

Plus I might guess there will be temporary helpers, the example being Nathanial Howe being in Kirkwall at the beginning but will obviously have to leave for the events of Awakening at some point with no guarantee of a return so it leaves potential for more then what you have at arms reach..

Some short-term companions seems a likely scenario to me as well. Or at least ones that come and go. Can you really expect to keep one team together for a decade? A core half-dozen plus some temps seems most likely, though this is pure speculation.

I agree with this. I just hope you get some choice as to who your core group are.

For instance you could send one companion away or convenience a supposedly temp companion to stay on.

My sentiments exactly. I'd be willing to guess that Bethany might stay no matter what, but it would be interesting to have the available party be tied to Hawke's relationships to an extent. I'd still prefer a couple perms just so you don't end up with no companions left.

Because how customizeable a companion is doesn't make them any more enjoyable, either. Your PC gets to be the special snowflake in that regard.

But you already knew that and decided to misinterpret what I said to be deliberately obtuse, I'm sure.

Do we have any characters that are universally hated? None that I've seen. Hence I've nothing to rationalize.

Aveline

Carver (seen in screenshots)
Hawke's mom (since if you can save Carver or your mother, it's a given that she's the final c ompanion)
The DLC character

This is probably going to be it. Oh, and Varric is going to be the only male LI. Live with it.

No.

And, no.

Indeed. This can't be it, no way.

I was certain of that just based in the character balance there, but it's good to know. I haven't been following the details of the companions all that closely, or reading all the discussion of it because I don't really want to know too much, so what's been said and not passes me by. That, and I've been busy playing DA:O. :)

Dispel Hope.

I was referring to the number of companions only. We've never said boo about Varric as a love interest, nor how many there would be-- nor will I.

Boo is only romanceable by the secret unlockable Richard Gere companion.

Wow. That raises some unpleasant imagery right there.

Be glad this is a world without duct tape, I guess.
