What most people don't understand is that the button<->awesome effect will happen with any set of buttons while DA 2 is running. Like, if you pause the game and go to heat up a chimichanga in the microwave, Batman might burst through your window and beat the crap out of you.

This is why I stopped dressing like catwoman when making my chimichangas.

Not a clue, but they probably have some guys who advertise games for a living. Going out on a precarious limb here: they probably know more about that than we do.Ryzaki wrote...

I fear it's armchair marketing that has them where they are now with DA2. They are becoming the laughing stock of the internet with this game. Except maybe for 12 yr olds.
Really, do they even read the reactions? It's humiliating.

Yes, but we are not representative of those who buy their games, so what do we know?
I mean, after all, I'd prefer to see gameplay footage in order to decide whether to buy a game, not know who is or is not a companion . . .or romanceable.
See how unrepresentative I am?

If you are really concerned about DAII then wait for reviews. Gameplay footage won't make a difference I bet.

You're on the games forum discussing it four months before release. You are not the demographic they are advertising towards.TJPags wrote...

The potential issue here would be, the pre-orders end quite a bit earlier than you're likely to read any reviews of the game. That means either missing out on some bonus content, or having to pay extra for it. And in such situation it's not unusal fro people to just put off the game purchase until the "complete edition" appears after a number of months -- but i'd imagine the developers would rather get money for their game sooner than later, so unless they feel showing gameplay would actually hurt sales rather than help them ... witholding it seems counterproductive.ErichHartmann wrote...

It will with me. But they're busy trying to snare those unfamiliar with the franchise, so they say. Lol, how many gamers are really unfamiliar with Dragon Age Origins at this point?
Just who are they targeting?

Nope, clearly I'm not.
The demographic they seem to want is those who get roped in by fancy catch phrases, and sex.
Not, you know, people who actually care about the game itself.

So the leading lady is a wh*re, and a pretty ugly one at that? Meh.
"Leading lady"? It's a companion, with an optional romance, and one you don't even have to recruit. If you really don't like her, then give her a pass. Seriously, the day we make a romanceable character that appeals to absolutely everyone (and, if female, isn't picked apart by forumites based on her facial features)... well, there's no need to speculate because that will never happen.
Just because it's the first companion we've publicly spotlighted doesn't mean there isn't anyone else.

I'm not saying that this is what they're definitely doing, this is more of an example, but feel free to attack this particular straw man, he probably deserves it. He has shifty eyes:TJPags wrote...

Splitting the audience into 4 rough and ugly groups (thats the demarkation that's ugly, not the people in the groups. Though I have no data on that); People who will buy the game regardless. People who want positive input before buying. People who aren't really paying attention but might buy it on a whim and People who just don't like this sort of thing.
Two of those groups are a flat out waste of your advertising budget. One of those groups might make a decision early on if the feedback is good throughout, but will most likely base the final decision of in depth reviews just prior to release, to ensure the feedback is positive. Making the other group the one you throw your budget at.
Obviously it's a lot more complex than that, what else is on the market etc, but I though their marketing direction was fairly blatant from the whole push button to release awesome talk. They want quick, memorable statements that will stick in peoples mind as they glare at the latest releases.
Also, people who care? I'm as big a fan of cliche as the next man but I imagine they're not all that giddy at the greeness of your currency.

I would hardly disagree that the marketing hasn't been stellar upto this point, however I do think it is partly a bi-product of DA2's development history. Regardless of whether it has or hasn't been given enough time (we won't know until we see the finished article), it could easily have meant that certain marketing bits and bobs (such as polished gameplay vids) have been delayed. Just speculation, but there are other alternatives to them just being lazy or getting it wrong somehow.
But I have no idea how any of this is relating to Aveline being a love interest...

Gaider got me started on that.
But hey, I love Aveline. Thighs of steel, bounce a quarter off her belly, and she can bend a horseshoe with one hand, no doubt.
