Are there any ways to unlock chests other than bashing or having a rogue in the party? I would be open to installing a mod or even somehow editing the pick lock skill into my character (favoured soul).

I know I could just bash the lock, but not knowing what items were broken from bashing will drive me nuts. Sometimes, the way you enjoy playing the game, is not the way the developers intended :P.

Welp, knock would work just fine. Unfortunately I don't have a wizard/sorcerer in my party at the moment, and I'll have to level Qara at least once more to add it to her repertoire.

Thanks for the suggestion though!

A Bard Character would also allow you access to Use Magic Device, pick locks, and a few other sort of theifly and wizardly skills all rolled into a character that can also fight a tad better than either of those two classes. Just a thought.

But a pure Bard won't be able to take max ranks in Rogue skills (you can still take them, but at medium ranks). Though a single Rogue level and the feat Able Learner will solve that (for any class, not necessarily Bards)...

It seems you're playing the OC. There are several items that let you cast Knock. Look for merchants in Neverwinter.

Chime of Opening, iirc
I guess using a Character Editor to pump up Lockpick skill would only get ya so far if no Rogue.

Yes, and Commander's Ring too, I think.

About half-ranks: you can buff your skills up to a respectable level even if you can't max them. Heroism, Inspire Competence, Prayer, items...but Knock is faster and easier.

This is a lot of concern over consumable items. Sure that potion may be nice, but is it worth the extra effort to get. Nothing important is destroyed when you bash the chest.

For a role-playing aspect I could see avoiding bashing the chest but it offers no consequences. You can pick locks, steal stuff and whatever with very little negative reactions from surrounding the NPCs.

Yeah I wasn't certain if bashing chests actually destroyed magical items or not, but seeing those broken items just made me ridiculously curious. Thanks for all the suggestions guys. For now, I just edited in some ranks in lock-picking for Grobnar (urgh) and I'll be picking up the commander's ring when I have enough dough.

Shaughn, are you sure you can't smash non-consumable items too? I have a vague memory of managing to break the drum of haunting in the OC bandit camp. I'm not completely sure I'm not making that up though.

Just double checked the script for treasure and it will replace a disposable item with broken item when bashed.
if (GetIsObjectValid(GetLastKiller()))
{
//PrettyDebug("creating broken item and removing disposeable");
iTreasureType = iTreasureType & (~X2_DTS_TYPE_DISP);
CreateItemOnObject(BROKEN_ITEM_RES_REF, OBJECT_SELF, 1);
}
Disposable items are identified in a 2da and there are a little more than just potions.
Items that can be destroyed are:
potions
grenade weapons (fire flask, thunderstones, choking powder, etc)
healing kits
lock picks
wands
scrolls
