a friend of mine who studies social sciences told me that a three year old child will know that the color pink is "for girls", under three years old, they couldn't care less.

It is only relatively recently pink has been associated with girls and blue with boys; traditionally pink was considered a male colour and blue was associated with females.

*Nods* Hell even caring about trying to define what a child's gender at birth onward is a fairly recent cultural trend. It used to be I think around 5 was when gender roles began to be enforced.

When and more importantly where? Prior to the boy/girl thing blue was associated with nobility, wealth and IIRC magic where as pink... wasn't really associated with anything.

Assigning colours to gender is a recent thing, mostly early 20th century. As to your associations, I've never heard of those.
Certainly for much of the relevant history in Europe the only constant reason I know of for colours being restricted is the cost of producing the specific dye, something which ensured only the wealthy could afford certain colours.

Indeed, in the 1800s very young children would wear mostly whites and greys and both genders wore what would be called a dress now.

Which is where blue's association with wealth and nobility (there's also the term blue-bloods for aristocrats) came from, same for purple's association with royalty. I've taken both womens' studies and sociology classes and I've never heard of the blue/pink colours being inversed at any point in history, which you would think most feminist teachers would be rather keen to bring up as further proof that notions of gender are social constucts.

"Blue-blood" has nothing at all to do with that. It relates to the pale skin of aristocracy.

Ugh, this thread.

While I can certianly agree with this sentiment in regards to some of this thread's content, I do think that the art shift makes this topic worth discussing.  One of the goals the devs claim to be trying to achive is to make things more sexy.  So far, I honestly don't feel that they have accopmlished that, given the screens we've seen.  Isabela's outfit is fanservicey, sure, but she and Aveline thus far don't "do it" for me.  I don't find either of them that attractive.

I think Isabela's face looks cartoonish and unnatural. It has less to do with her being outright ugly, for me, and more to do with her not having a normal person face. Her lips are far too high up on her face, and far too pinched. I think Aveline is prettier. Honestly, if they just widened and lower her lips a teeny bit she'd look so much better.

I think Aveline is prettier, honestly. Not because she defies social norms or anything, and Isabela is walking fanservice, but because her face isn't cartoonish and out of proportion.

Any better?

Is the Revamped version real? If not, I'm shocked. Bioware's art designers really need to step up their game the original is just pure fUGLY.

It looks like an early version of Isabella. She looks much better in other screen shots. I'm surprised they even showed this one. It's bad indeed.

Actually, as late as the 20th century, I believe pink was considered a colour applicable primarily to male children.
Princess Astrid of Belgium for example, decorated a room for her assumedly imminent son, only to give birth to a daughter.
I've also heard it speculated that blue was the colour referring to girls due to the Virgin Mary's dressing in the colour. And I'm fairly sure that in contrast, pink, or a light red, was assigned to boys as it was considered the colour of the archangel Michael.

I’m not big on girls that can beat me up (which covers the majority out there). Isabela looks like a nice bit of crumpet though, I’d sure love to plunder her booty!

Well, I've never encountered a girl who can beat me up. I mean, there's a reason girls can't dunk. No offense ladies! Upper body strength ftw! That said, it's okay to let the girl beat you up if that's what your into.

Did you guys immediately like Morrrigan and Leliana when they were announced? I'm just curious.

Eh, as I've said many times elsewhere, most of the girls in DAO are butterfaces. It's a damn shame that the best looking women in the game aren't even in your party (the barmaid from Redcliffe and the Lady of the Forest). Modders recognized this too, hence all of the revamps on Morrigan and Leliana.

yeah i used mods to get Morrigan and Leliana to look half way decent.

Leiliana was Fugly.

I found the barmaid from Redcliffe had nothing special and never thought Leliana or Morrigan needed to be revamped (I saw the mods but to me, they're just other characters). If you want to use words like fugly and butterface, fine, but you shouldn't assume your personal opinion is the general one. Is it so hard to say "I think that / find that" as opposed to "is" ?

People keep bringing up that one image while I think she looks different on all the others we've seen. If you ask me, the revamp looks more like someone got a sex change, so then again, it's all opinions. Forums are made to express opinions but if you go "X is fugly", "Y is the best looking character in the game", you're disguising your opinion into a universal truth.

Ugh... That Isa pic. When will it die?! Do so few people understand that angles make a difference? Or that it isn't final? *sighs*

I didn't get a chance to mod until I got DA:O for my Mac but I wasn't fond of those appearance changing mods, it just didn't seem right to me.

Sidenote: Revamp Isa is definitely not for me.

I've taken both gender studies and sociology classes and have heard this.

wikipedia

In Western culture, the practice of assigning pink to an individual gender began in the 1420s or earlier. From then until the 1940s, pink was considered appropriate for boys because being related to red it was the more masculine and decided color, while blue was considered appropriate for girls because it was the more delicate and dainty color, or related to the Virgin Mary. Since the 1940s, the societal norm was inverted; pink became considered appropriate for girls and blue appropriate for boys, a practice that has continued into the 21st century.

I find it funny that the best looking female Dragon age has produced so far is Bethany and you can't even romance her. However, I understand why people have an issue with it.

As for the others, including Varric, I'm very uncontent.

Forbidden fruit. They treat us like dogs; they give us the table scraps whereas the delicious tasty cuisine remains high up on the table itself forever beyond our reach, almost as if to mock us . . . until modders hack Bethany's skin model and replace Isabela's with it.

I'm waiting until a "final" version of Isabela and Aveline are released before I pass any real judgement on them, and even then it won't make any difference.

Personality will decide who joins the party and I can think of few companions Bio has recently created that I truly can't stand in a party.
