I wonder if any of the Bioware crew ever regret the fact that Romanceable NPCs have emerged as an expectation in all of their releases? I mean, I can't think of many other western games with a similar feature; Fable is pretty much it, and really, Romance there just entails farting, dancing, and maybe waving severed heads around a few times. GTAIV has you bowling and playing darts until women like you enough to fade to black. Neither of these games even remotely approach the intricacy of Bioware's romances. I wonder if anyone could have possibly realized back in the days of BG2 that romanceable NPCs would end up being quite so endemic to all future Bioware releases?
David ends up writing most of them, it looks like, and he even has the (unenviable, in my opinion) job of writing a lot of the male LIs. I have to think that at some point, the seeming obligation to shoehorn in yet another romance to each release has to start to get a bit tiresome.

Appropriately enough, Kotaku just did an editorial on what I find to be a major problem with Bioware's depicion of 'romance' lately. kotaku.com/5701668/the-problem-with-sex-as-a-video-game-goal
Bioware games are still on the top of my list when I think of games with great story, but one area I feel they sort of lag behind in is 'romance'. Sex has been the climax of all relationships since Jade Empire. I'm hoping more than anything that with the time gaps this will be something Dragon Age 2 can improve on.

I don't see why it would be, really. I can't think of an epic story that doesn't have a romance in it. It really doesn't get much better than love and adventure and saving the world.

That is a good point. I never really realized/put thought into the fact that pretty much all the romances in those Bioware games put sex as the last complete step. I guess it can be argued that Zevran is an exception to this rule but that is just one exception out of many.

Because these romances are being written for irascible RPG nerds. If I had a buck for every time I've heard someone complain about Anomen or Carth, I'd... Well, I guess I'd spring for the Super Prestige edition of DA2, that comes with a facial scar temporary tattoo, a jug of stage blood, and a Zhu-Zhu Nug.

From what I've seen here in the forums, nothing's been anounced about the romances. Is it certain that we're going to have romances in the game at all?

Nope. Isabela just shoves her tounge half way down Hawkes' throat for fun.
Don't misunderstand. It's just her way of saying hi. She does it to everyone.Xewaka wrote...

I bet she did have fun with him, though.

Are you serious? A nerd calling out nerds. Romances are an extra layer of character development and immersion. Nobody forces you to pursue them either.

With the 10 year span of the game, I would expect the romances to be more in-depth both before and after sex; otherwise it is going to be a looooong 10 years.
Of course they could go the other way and give you the ability to have multiple LI's i.e. one gets killed or leaves you and a few years later you get another one.
Hopefully the writers can find the right pacing for character development over the 10-year span. That sounds like something very hard to pin down.Johnny Chaos wrote...

Hawke: We've been having sex for the past 10 years, what's next?
Isabela: I haven't thought that far yet

Bioware have written many romances over the years: anomen, viconia, jahiera, aeire, aribeth, valen, nathyrra, carth, bastila, juhani, sky, silk fox, dawn star, Liara, Ashley, Kaidan, Thane, Garrus, Jacob, Miranda, Jack, Tali, Morrigan, Leliana, Zevran, and Alistair to be exact. And all but one (Alistair's) sucked. Most were underdeveloped, corny, and added nothing to the main plot. I really wish Bioware would avoid fluffy love stories (which have no place in a dark, gritty game like Dragon Age) and focus on the story instead.
