I feel were getting off track here. I'm not trying to make a statement about military ethics, I'm pointing out that Bioware romances are usually underdeveloped, have no bearing on the main plot, and occur in unrealistic settings. In other words, they fit the tvtropes definintion of a "token romance" like a glove. Therefore, they shouldn't be included in DA2.

That's just the nature of the game. They have to remain optional content, and you can't have something that's optional be intractable from the main plot. You could have them fill a generic space in the plot that's unrelated to their personal narrative, but that would be largely unfulifilling.

This is exactly why optional romances should get the axe. Plus they casue endless, boring shipping wars on the forums.

The number of people who think the main story line is the only thing that matters in an RPG is mind-boggling.

The romances were not optional in DAO to my mind, because they were the primary way in which I figured out who my character was.  In DA2 there will also be family relationships in which to do this, but besides just being fun story elements in themselves, romance story lines are still rich, rich lodes for characterization of both the PC and party members.

As to your whole theory on no romance occurring during wartime, I'd say you've been pwned by reality, even setting aside the fact that this is a fantasy setting and in DA2 you even have a decade's worth of time in which to develop a romantic story line.

Ok, thanks for clarifying, but the warden didn't have a physical attraction to any of her companions before the crisis began. Its not "a physical attraction that, suprise, turned emotional". Its an emotional and connection that developed under circumstances that wouldn't allow for romance.

Says who?

Says you? No, actually not. The Warden is a customizable character.

For example, Aedan Cousland - on my version of Dragon Age, was instantly attracted to Leliana when he saw her, and welcomed her despite her odd Maker theories. He also slept with Morrigan who he bonded with immediately when their journey began. But he fell in love with Leliana. Why? She believes in the Maker, and is a kind soul. So he's happy with her. So does the "official" story come to a close at the sex? Actually, it ends when the game ends.

Or my first Dalish elf, he had no attraction to any party members when he met them. He's a dalish elf, they're all humans/dwarves/qunari/golems/male elves. He only fell for Leliana after she proved to be a strong and capable woman.

You don't get to state this crap as fact. Just because you don't like a particular romance does not mean Bioware should cater for just you. If you don't like a particular romance, then nobody is forcing you to. That is why it is optional. I'd not play DA2 if they cut out features because someone tried to cite their opinion as "fact" that they are "unrealistic."

My main warden was a sarcastic hornball who slept with Morrigan, countless prostitutes, and Zevran. Stuck around for Zevran. Maybe your warden wouldn't fall for anyone under the circumstances; Maybe he was too straight-laced for it. But that's your warden. Mine was a bastardly rogue who didn't much like the idea of, you know, becoming a warden and who reacted to the stressful situation by becoming even more of a sleaze.

You say that you don't like the romances because they add nothing to the main plot.

For me, that doesn't matter. They, while not being part of the main plot, gave my warden a motivation he previously did not have, and depth to his character. The romances shouldn't have to be an integral part of the story because - and I'm totally stealing this from your book because your arguments are absolutely mind-boggling - , in real life, loving someone isn't normally the prime motivation for going to war, or becoming a cop, detective, anything risky to one's health. However, cops do date cops. Military personnel marry military personnel; In fact my cousin, who is currently serving, is engaged to the most ridiculous marine I ever had the pleasure of meeting. So you saying that it is 'unrealistic' to find people falling in love during times of peril - or people who live perilous lives side by side - is supposition at best. It happens. Romance doesn't have to be the driving force behind something in order for it to happen. It doesn't even have to be part of the main story.

In fact, it could simply be a side-effect. You say it doesn't make sense for romance to happen in tense situations? I say people have different tension relievers. Some people find that in sex or with being someone they care about in general. I met one of my best friends in a time of really crappy personal stuff. We are just friends, but if things were resolved a little differently it probably could have been more.

But you also said that you found the side quests ridiculous and that you wanted them axed, too.

If life was as straight-laced and clean cut as that, if people were so focused on one thing and one thing only, no room for anyone else, then God damn that would be a boring existence.

Bottom line is this; you play Dragon Age your way, I'll play it my way. You're free to have your opinion, but your opinion doesn't mean Bioware should get rid of certain options just because you don't like them.

Probably not gonna happen in this game, but I would love the ability to have romances with people outside of your party.

I've always found it quite unprofessional to have relations with people in your party, it's like banging a co worker. It's like. . .the one thing I liked about Persona 4, the ability to have relationships with a class mate or something, a npc that doesn't fight. While you had the choice of party mates, I would never choose that option because dipping your pen in the company ink leads to disaster most of the time.

I personally would not like to have to think of the death of my beloved and then drag them about into situations that increase their chances of death all of the time. DA isn't like the Baldur's Gate series where people can be brought back to life with ease, it's supposed to be a difficult/impossible thing. Not to mention situations that would cause strife and jealousy that can not be avoided in the line of duty.

I forget which dev said it, but it was stated that you'd be able to get into relationships with people out of your party. What that actually means is unknown.

Knowing the writers, it isn't that far-fetched to assume that this 'relationship' is the npc trying to eat your kidney.

No need to necro old threads when the answer is readily available in existing ones.

There are romances. We have not announced which characters they are. The Hawke you've seen is the default appearance, though you are free to make your own (as in DAO) and can also select your character's first name (as in DAO).
