So, obviously I've missed something.  All across the forums there's this underlying assumption that Loghain is quite possibly the end villain, and a decent bit of hate his way.  My question to the populace, is why the assumption?  To the best of my knowledge, he was a long time friend of King Maric, he shut out the love of his life for the betterment of the kingdom, his daughter married Maric's son and is now Queen, and he's still sitting in Gwaren, although be it considerably older.  Soooo yeah, was there a spoiler I missed or somesuch?  Pieces just don't seem to fit with him to be the big baddie at the end.

Reposting on account of the fact that I was daft for a moment and placed it in the General Discussion. >.<!

No problem. I don't believe Loghain is the 'end villain' but he is a prominent villain. During the Battle of Otigar, he withdraws his troops and leaves King Calian and a small group of Grey Wardens to die at the hands of the darkspawn.

I loved Loghain throughout both books. ^__^; He was the only character I really liked. So even if he is evil, I'll be siding with him anyway (my first character was planned out to be evil in the first place!).

Loghain is voiced by Simon Templeman. He's gotta be a villain.

Plus, he's a jerk.

Plus, what Maria said.

I don't believe he is the villain. For several reasons. If you want to know why check the Prima guide TOC. On top of that. It's been stated that he becomes a Grey Warden.

It's interesting that he withdrew his troops, though it seems to me there'd be more to the issue. Calian was all but promised to his daughter since birth, and he'd been around while the kid was growing up, and by all accounts owes his livelihood to Maric's family, and has a deepseated loyalty to Ferelden. Seems out of character that he'd use Calian as a sacrificial pawn for at best some minimal gains in influence. I mean, his daughter was already queen. Can't get much higher than that.

It's a lots of ifs and maybes, but what if Loghain found Cailan less useful, he is not as obedient as he should be, teaming up with Grey Wardens, and as far as I know Loghain isn't realy fond of them, If Anora is with a child, he can be a regent for his granchild, 'till the child reaches adulthood, or he would like to see his daughter as a sovereign ruler the first of his dynasty. So it's lots to gain, with a  clever coup d'état, he can state that, he never saw the signal, to come to Cailan's aid. (Giving this signal would be the PC-s job if I recall it correctly.) There's are some prophecy about Loghain's treacheries so he could be a vilain as anyone else, but not  necessarily. The dragonage wikia wrote something about Loghain being a possible companion, but that doesn't mean anything about Loghain being a vilain or not.

I believe he's not a villain, at least not in a conventional sense.

He obviously betrayed Cailan but getting rid of him is a favor for Ferelden.

Perhaps he can become a villain depending on what choices you make.

But overall I still think he's cute and warm and fuzzy.

Only an idealist would consider him a villain. Some people have to think of the bigger picture, and get their hands bloody... so that idealist can exist. :P

For everyone who hates Loghain, there's another who loves him. A lot of people took away a lot of different things from him.

I find it hard to believe that his betrayal of Cailan is just that simple, though. Read The Calling before you make judgments on Loghain's character.

He can alway change into the villain...after all you are a new recruit trying to act like a grey warden...he may think you can not handle the job so he will take over!

That wouldn;t necissarily make him a villain. Just a narcissist jerk. :wizard:

I sure hope he isn't a villain. I love him in the books and would really hate to kick his butt in the game.

Not a villain; a damaged man with a tactical mind, yes.

I won't have any trouble sacrificing him for the greater good, lets just say.

I went ahead and fixed that for you, hahaha. Needless to say, I'm a raging Loghain fanboy.

I like him, very interesting character, but he will absolutely die if necessary.   I'm sure he'd want nothing else, right?

Can't deprive him of his rights to uphold the common good, can I?

Everyone makes mistakes. I am sure he learned his lesson.

It's confirmed he's a companion NPC by the official strategy guide - I doubt he's the final boss, though it would be a nice twist if he were.

Linarc, in CC files is a lot of info but don't know how many of them are true and are in finished product...I even found a word about Human Commoner Origin in CC file :D

Mjodr

Im sure that Loghain will learn his lesson in a Hell..He will be my Dalish Elf enemy not only becouse he tried to kill my PC, but also becouse of his race, and becouse I plann to have Elf PC as a member of a Katriel's family. While, when I will play as a Noble I will probably ( if it will be possible) work with Loghain.

I think Loghain is one of the antagonists at least early on. Since it's speculated he's a potential companion I'm sure that's based on player choices and he may be one of the harder to get.

Unless I missed something, it's not speculation - the released table of contents to the Prima guide lists him as a companion along with Alistair, Sten, Morrigan and the rest. The guide doesn't list temporary companions like the tower guards, so I suspect it means he's a permanent companion. But I do think he'll be a secret or difficult to get companion.

It's definitely more than speculation. Even before the Prima guide AND the CC file leak, it was a little more than speculation.

A traitor to one can be a hero to another. Benedict Arnold is an enemy to the US, but a hero to Great Britain.

If he feels very strongly about Cailan turning to the, to him, non-trustworthy Grey Wardens. In his mind, he might just be thinking he is saving Ferelden from a huge threat.

Nothing is really ever just black and white.
