Your opinion seems to be shared by several posters, but I still don't get it. Fighting a possessed Collector =/= fighting Harbinger. It's not like Shepard was in space going toe to toe with a reaper. I agree that the dialogue was terrible, but Shepard's ability to defeat a possessed labor drone with no mind of its own did not, for me, diminish the threat of the reapers. To say that it does is like saying "I am strong enough to break Mike Tyson's toothpicks. Every toothpick he discards, I can break it. Therefore I am not scared of Mike Tyson."

It is the suspension of disbelief, which is neither logical nor rational. Simply being incapable of defeating an enemy immediately accentuates the intimidation behind his existence. We know due to the structure of gaming that we must be victorious, however the lingering query of how is an amplifier. The best example is fear. I can show people vid clips from The Ring or a creepy gif I have of something popping out and while it will spook them, yet telling a plausible story where something might happen at any moment, but you never know when nor to you ever see anything can terrify someone far greater than a cheap clip. We scare ourselves a hundred times more than anything else.

Now Sovereign or any of the Reapers never imposed horror like the aforementioned. It is impose elements that were unnerving and simply because we cannot defeat it outright increases the delusion. I know, it sounds completely ridiculous, however it is how the mind works at times.

If you fancy a less philosophical approach. It could be the horrific dialogue, him being irritating to constantly fight or simply Sovereign was first. We already know how powerful and deathly a reaper is and the knowledge alone is a hindrance for Harbinger, who does little to one up; for lack of a better term, Sovereign. I imagine if Harbinger has more obscured role and came before Sovereign, he would not been complained about as much.

We could also fault the poor pacing of the main storyline and the whole character focus. There are a large variety of theories all equally acceptable. Hopefully Bioware is working to improve with ME3.

I think in ME3 we will find an ancient race that will rival the Reapers. We will see the Reapers from their pov ,and realize they can be beat. With this new help.

Maybe the Reapers just tell us what we need to hear and not the whole truth. The Shadow Broker proves the point that there are alien races out there we have not seen, and may not have found. The collector base, the dead Reaper in ME2 prove we have not found and explored the entire galaxy.

It doesn't sound ridiculous, it makes perfect sense, BUT... (and I'm going to sound like a broken record here) ... Shepard did not defeat Harbinger in ME2. What you're saying would make sense if we had defeated Harbinger (even just once, let alone a dozen times over) but we didn't! We didn't even fight him!

Along the same lines, it really bugs me when characters in the game credit Shepard with taking down Sovereign. Sometimes they say he is "the man who defeated Saren" which is fine, but sometimes... well for example, right at the start TIM says "you killed [a reaper], they have to respect that" and I was like WTF? Shepard didn't kill Sovereign you idiot! The fifth fleet killed him!

Harbinger would have been so far better if his possessions would have been invulnerable and dished out enough Damage to kill everyone with one or two hits, but disappearing after some time (about one minute in which sticking out your nose makes you dead for most of the time) due to the difficulty to sustain such a presence over such vast distances, leaving the body he possessed utterly destroyed in the process.

Just imagine a whole group of Collectors attacking and flanking you during a time in which a possessed drone wreaks enough havoc to make you want to run as far away as fast as possible and just to sit out the time so you don't die of Reaper Stompage, whilst it is completely untouchable. THAT would have made for some serious battles and would have actually make the Collectors pose a threat AND keep the Reapers there aura of neverending superiority.

Right now, people see Collectors and start shooting. And now imagine that each of those Collectors could turn into a Cain dual wielding wall of invincibility that has a personal vendetta against you specifically. The players would start gunning them down like there is no tommorrow for the sheer need of survival.

Four pages and not one single reference of...

"Ahh yes..." *airquotes* "Reapers" *stop airquotes* "we've dismissed those claims!".

Impressive, most impressive, I don't consider ME2 to have bashed the Reapers, Harbinger, yes, but not the reapers in general. Main reason for my thought on this, the derelict reaper. Considering how creepy it was going through a derelict one, imagine what it might be like going through a live one which we know will be teeming with husks, abominations, scions, indoctrinated people etc... and probably be a good idea if there is a time limit on how long we have to get something done before the affects of being in it could start taking effect, remember what Benezia said about it?

I have every faith that the Reapers are going to be just as scary/creepy as sovereign was, because the sheer thought of us potentially needing to get on a live one just sends shivers down my spine.

Course, trying to get to its core would be a real suicide mission I imagine because just think what it'd be like to be that close to a live reaper core. Somehow I think it'll take more than a CAIN shot to take one out, even if you were able to survive long enough to get there ;)

ME2 ruined the Reapers for me, they were far more scary when they were unknown monsters, instead of silly one-liner spouting squids who fail at everything.

Hilarious!

As for the first post, rarely have I found something on this forum that I agree so wholeheartedly with.

Edit - and Bourne Endeavour talks sense as well.

Yeah..I was going too..but felt that it had probably been so overused on other forums.

I killed the counsel once for fun, just because of that line. Posted Image

Harbinger is like a 12 year kid on a soda buzz calling you names on XBOX live.

Real scary.
