I'm quite glad that Alistair forces himself to sacrifice himself, actually. It's fitting. Very fitting. In the movies (bear with me on this one) it's always the big, hulking, charming man that saves the day in the end, and what better way to do with then giving your life for your loved one?

The feminist in me wants to grumble but I'll let this slide. It's ultimately not important. Alistair just ****ing died... godDAMN him.

I got that my first time.  Then there was much swearing and tears.
Great game.

Edit:  Any regrets on not reloading right away?

None. As good as a more happy ending probably is... it's gotta be damn good to top this. Honestly, the ending I got was probably better than every second of entertainment I've gotten out of the game till that point added together. Glad I listened =) Thank you =)

...But I still gotta reload! Cause I wanna know, still x)

I used to be a fan, now I'm just a DAMN YOU ALISTAIR

Ah. The first time got that I gaped at the screen in shock for a few moments. (Granted I figured that would happen) but still. O_O

I was displeased that I couldn't even stop him.

I mean...come on!

Though the sad look he gives you when you leave him at the gates. :crying:

Well it's kinda hard to stop him when he's running with all he's got and he's got a head start on you. What was I supposed to do? Arcane Bolt his knees? x)

EDIT: Now that's a paragon interrupt right there......

If you were playing on PC there is a mod where you can knock him out and kill the Archdemon yourself. But I just saw your profile, 360 player... :(

There are mods for the computer version that let you punch him out.

Edit:  Someone beat me to it... :)

Yeah I wanted to use that mod but it interferes with other mods. D:

Still his goodbye is so heartbreaking. (All of my US games end up with him hardened and king) I can't deal with what happens when he's unhardened.

As for his head start if you're a mage all you have to do is forcefield him.

Yeah, I'm a dirty consoler ;) So no mods for me, all vanilla. Just as cruel as David intended it, I guess...

I'd whoop that guy's ass right about now. Then blow on his wounds and kiss them to make him feel better. Then beat him down again. Repeat until I feel better.

Frankly my emotional state is really weird right now. It probably doesn't show much in text, but I doubt I show much emotion at all in my text right now. I'm all numbed out. ****.

Don't worry I think most Alistairans have been in that position. I knew it was coming and I still burst into tears like a baby.

I think girls got the better end of the deal as far story and romances are concerned in this game.

Good luck on your attempt to romance Lelianna in your next game as a girl.  My second playthrough I had planned to romance Zevran...until I got that F%^ing rose.

Yeah, usually I feel the male characters get the better stuff. I mean, BG2 has three romances instead of one if you're male? KotOR... even though I don't hate Carth by any means, who could possibly compare him to Bastila? Ashley's more interesting than Kaidan. And hey, Jack and Tali are both great romances, though I guess so are Garrus and Thane.

But wow I ain't seeing any DAO romances beating this. Not even happy Alistair ending. Oh crap now the visuals came up again... why isn't there some Alistair resurrection DLC? ;_;

And yeah, that rose. I can totally see what happened with your playthrough there =) Alistair is just way too sweet.
Way way waaay too sweet. It's actually quite odd that I went for a straight romance on my first game when a lesbian one was available, I usually jump right at those. But Alistair charmed me right away <3 Oh Alistair... why did you do that? =( You silly, silly knight...

I have great empathy for you. I'm starting to think that the Landsmeet is a giant two fingered retort to the gamer and their plans for Ferelden.

It really sort of is isn't it?

I have to make another suicidal Cousland one of these days. The only question is if they should be male or female.

Hey I'm only starting to think it Image IPB.  I think about all sorts of things that turn out to be wrong.  That's why I love thinking Image IPB

ZOMG! New players are delicious!

Yes, I had all the black and white, good guy bad guy stereo types going into this game too.

Fortunately after talking to Ser Gilmore (human noble origin) and Alistair when I very first picked him up at Ostagar, and Duncan and Loghain and every single character or nobody I ran in to . . . it was made clear to me that Wardens are not knights in shining armor, they are not heroes in everyone's eyes, and it was my character's duty to do what needs to be done. At that moment I said to myself, "OK - if that is the case I can expect the same hard line from the NPCs too I'll bet."

I was lucky. I figured the "realistic" tone of this game early. I wasn't horrified when bad things happened. I owned the Landsmeet.

But, ironically, I discounted a lot of "good guy" choices in the game because I had assumed the opposite of the OP . . . I assumed that the "win - win" situation was impossible. Only after coming here did I learn I could get what I wanted.

I had the same playthrough first time, though I was a HN. :) Alistair king, unhardened, dumps my char (she didn't announce she'd be queen--too power-grabby. She was hoping he'd propose), doesn't make him do the DR, and he kills himself. Argh. >.<

Glad you enjoyed the first playthrough, with all its laughter and tears!

KiddDaBeauty:

You have my sympathy — I, too, have experienced that particular ending with Alistair, and it drove me absolutely batty.

Be warned, though, that if you stick to your plans to romance Leliana in your next playthrough, you can expect similar emotions (or not), depending upon the choices you make with her.

Romance can be such a literal heartbreaker, sometimes. Other times, it makes your heart soar. Ah, such is life ...

Why can't I just carry Alistair's baby and call it a life!? xD

Here's to finishing up Witch Hunt with my Warden, then I'm going back pre-Landsmeet to put Anora as queen to see a what-if =)

I did this my first playthrough. Nothing wrong with choosing the fate of the country's monarchy and ending the royal Theirin line to keep your relationship going :innocent: Not when it's Alistair you're in a relationship with, anyway.

I hope you went ahead and did the playthrough without him. I also was a bit shaken afterwards but I stuck to my guns (I went into the landsmeet with every intention of making Anora queen and wasn't going to let anyone or anything derail that). I liked having Loghain on my team for the short time I had him and you learn some interesting things about Anora. After I played through to the end I just went back to my landsmeet save file and married Alistair on my second go.

God damn you, Alistair.

Told you :P That ending is one of my all time favourites, simply because it came so unexpectedly and was utterly heart wrenching. The way your character looks on helplessly is perfect.

WHY DID YOU DO THAT?!

You're a better woman than I, KiddDaBeauty. I wasn't able to go through with it. Heck, on my most recent playthrough, I broke up with Alistair to keep Roland happy (was trying the Ser Gilmore mod), and I felt like an absolute monster. I actually cried. And then, I wanted to see the different endings, so I accepted his offer to make the killing blow. Apparently, you get to choose if you're the one that dumps him. And that made me cry. I copied the save to another folder, reloaded, and convinced Alister to make the demon baby. I couldn't live with myself for killing him.

This is my first playthrough of the game (yes, I'm very late to the party, quite aware), and I just finished the Landsmeet. I made Alistair king since I trust him and his good heart a whole lot more than Anora, and... then he dumps me!?

I just can't believe it. I sat there for a good 5 minutes or something just staring into my monitor after the dialogue ended. I tried my best to fight his stupid decision but he won't budge. I can't be his queen since I'm not of noble birth, and regents are expected to marry and have children.

God, I feel so strongly about this. It's really weird. This is the first time I've gotten dumped in a Bioware game. And I liked Alistair so freaking much too, I almost felt guilty over how much I liked talking to him when I thought about my irl boyfriend (silly, I know!).

So now's just the question to myself... do I accept this, or do I re-load and make Anora queen just to save our relationship? I don't particularly like her, and I'm not sure it's okay to put her as reigning queen just to save mine and Alistair's relationship. Not to mention that even if my characters won't know this happened, I freaking know! My game's still running, haven't moved an inch since Alistair went out the room and I have a stupid level up window up. But yeah, what now, what now...

Did this happen to anyone else? I mean the event, and the feelings about the event both lol =)

Welcome! Image IPB

I cried like a baby when he broke up with me. I just couldn't believe that he would end it, after all the things we shared. At the time, I felt used, and betrayed.Image IPB I didn't know about "hardening" him, and I still put him on the throne(despite him telling me he didn't want to be king), because I disliked Anora.

Some of the choices you have to make really tend to wreak havok on your emotions. Goodluck on your other playthroughs. *hug*

=D *hugs back*

I'm quite happy with the ending though. Played out an "alternate ending" for myself where I put Anora as queen and did the Morrigan ritual. It felt pretty good to get to see it. But my "self-canon" story will always be the one where the hero of my heart became the hero of the lands ^^

Now I'm more starting to feel bad about how the game's over xD New origin, new romance, new class and a new persona would work fine though I guess =)

But yeah some of the consequences to these choices are so sadistic...

Just a warning, since you're on the console -- Zevran's and Leliana's romances both have pretty bad bugs. Romance stopping, end of communication type bugs. If you start Leliana's romance and have not gotten her personal quest, you will have to break up with her to get it :/ You can start it again after finishing her personal quest, but it's a shame to have to do that. If after Zevran's personal quest you get a public kiss -- reload and redo the fight. the public kiss is bugged and the romance never switches to love. Plus with both of them, you're getting the wrong dialogs a lot of the time.

Bleh, i hate that bw hasn't fixed those.

Maybe I'm not understanding you, but he doesn't break up with you if you make Anora sole ruler.  If you spare Loghain, yes, but if you just run off and be Wardens together, he's copacetic.
