Interesting post. I HNF made Alistair king because he doesn't show up in Awakening if you don't make him king. If he was a Grey Warden, then Awakening would be full of bugs or does the convo change and you aren't the only Grey Warden in Fereldon. If Alistair is a Grey Warden he would be with you at Vigil's Keep.

Unless he was at Highever building Duncan's memorial, called to Weisshaupt, temporarily reassigned, whatever.

Though honestly Alistair is miserable as king I don't see why you'd make him king unless you planned on being chancellor or queen. He's much happier if the two of you remain grey Wardens together.

Unhardened, that's true.  Hardened, not so much.

OP, my advice- reload and make Anora sole ruler.  Others have told you not to do it and to play it through, so you decide.  :)

Hmmm? Did I completely miss something?

In one of my Dalish play throughs, she was very selfish and self absorbed but rather brutal. She hardened him, because that was her outlook in life. She then didn't make him King, 'cause that would mean a likely seperation to her. The two remained Grey Wardens, and he said something like

'I'm so grateful to you. You gave me the strength I needed, and helped me avoid the one destiny that's haunted me since I was a little child'.

I mean.. I'm not saying he isn't happier unhardened and remaining a Grey Warden, but he's certainly not sad? :P

That sounds like an unhardened line to me, but I'd need a toolset person to confirm.  In response to "are you okay with Anora being queen?" he says "barely, but at least it's not me" and doesn't sound very happy about it.  It's not that he wants to be king, but doesn't trust Anora, and is willing to come around to see being king as an opportunity to do good.  For instance, if you ask him in the Landsmeet "what should I do?" he says unequivocally "make me king- Anora is not an option."  When hardened, I mean.

Yep, when hardened, Alistair wants you to make him king, and even says that it might be an interesting life for him. It wouldn't have been his first choice, but in the absence of better options, it's what he wants. And it turns out he's pretty good at it. When left unhardened, he never comes to terms with the idea.

Yes but they don't say that and I doubt that Alistair would go off by himself.  When HNF tells Alistair that she'd go to Highever with him to do a memorial for Duncan (afterall she is from Highever), Alistair says that he'd like that and wouldn't the Grey Warden commander be the one called to Weisshaupt.  I think so.  Awakening is disjointed and really doesn't fit in with DAO except for that one part.  Even Ogren is different.  I played through it once and once was enough for me.  Also one other thing that isn't right.  Duncan said that the joining was secret and only Grey Wardens knew about it but in Awakening the seneschal certainly knows about it.  Huh???  Well anyway, I only played Awakening because my son made me.  I write romance novels and I'd never leave an ending so open.  People need closure even in a game.

I believe that they would have put Alistair/Leliana/Zevran in if they were a love interest as a companion if they had had the budget.

All three of them, if they were in love with the warden and the warden chooses to rebuild the gray wardens, stay with the warden in the Origins epilogue cards.

I personally was let down by Awakening (Hated the dialog system for sure) but I do understand why they had to deviate from the epilogue cards.  It's not only Alistair.  In many ways I think the way they handled Zevran was worse -- they took his ultimate sacrifice endings -- the absolute worst that happens to him -- and made it very possibly what happens to him no matter what.
