Maybe I never heard it explicitly laid out, but I didn't know that ME2's system of levelling skills had been implemented. I also have to be suspicious about why they've decided to go mum on decision imports when we knew we could before.

I'm not sure what I feel at this point.

I think that whatever portion of my being that determines how much evil I can do in one act has unfurled like a flower of death, filling me with an insatiable urge to rend and tear flesh in order to quench the bloodlust I feel after reading that interview.

Or I haven't eaten in twelve hours.

I'm going to go see what I have in the fridge.

I had a fireball, but now that I've gone up a level I have… a slightly larger fireball!

What a huge improvement from Origins where the strength of one's spell was determined by stats and each level gave you a different spell.

Enjoy your nerf bat, mages. :P

I am really hating that. Look, it's exactly like Mass Effect 2's crappy system!

Image IPBImage IPBI don't really know anything about ME2's system, but I don't necessarily think the upgrades are going to ruin spells.  The devs have already said that each upgrade will be roughly the equivalent of a new spell.  Whether they actually deliver on this promise remains to be seen, but I don't have a problem with the concept as long as they do it well.  Not to mention all of the spells that weren't that useful or ones that can probably be upgraded anyway (instead of getting a new spell-such as Paralyze to Mass Paralyze; it's the same effect but it affects an area.Image IPBImage IPB

They said you could upgrade abilities if you chose to, but it was not a linear thing like ME2

I'd use a picture of Corporal Jones but I doubt many would get it.

Taking out the spells people never used anyway is hardly a nerf, more of a step towards WoW.

You choose to upgrade existing spells or aquire new ones. You probably don't have to bother with upgrades at all if the podcast 5 pics are anything to go by.

Really? Then why...?

Awesomebutton marketing at its finest! Well, I was misled, at least. Still, I'm suspicious about the "we're not saying you can import" thing.

We've known that you would up upgrading spells for a while now. We've already seen what Isabela's small Swashbuckler talent tree looks like; if each class has a tree reasonably larger and more complex, then it is a definite upgrade over the Origins system.

My guess is they interviewed a guy and asked him all sorts of questions he was not ready nor briefed to answer; that is to say, he was not sure what was and was not already released, so he played it safe. I will eat the hat I do not own if our Origins choices end up not transferring.

Image IPBImage IPBThey've said over and over again that you can import your saves.  I think what he was probably getting at is that the differences in DA2 based on your choices in DA:O are not necessarily huge.  Maybe a few conversations will change and characters (like, say, speaking to the ruler of Ferelden and it being either Alistair or Anora or whatever), but the overall plot is probably going to go no matter what since it's a new story.  Which is actually what I expected.  It's like the changes due to choices in Origins are seasonings on food-they lend flavor to the experience but you're still eating the same dish at the end of the day.

The whole point of the new talent trees are to give you more choice in how you develop your character. They don't want linear skill development anymore.

Forcing things like spell upgrades down players' throats seems a bit counterproductive to that goal, IMO.

No, it's not new information.  In fact, it's less information than we'd previously been given.  I mean, holding back the name of the town Hawke flees from (Lothering)??  We've known that for quite some time.  Won't say if decisions even carry over?   We've been told some will.  Yet he confirms Isabela is a romance option, something Gaider seemed to be playing coy on just yesterday.

And not once did he say "pushbuttonsomethingawesomehappens".

This was just - extremely odd, and glaring in its inconsistency with other interviews and press releases, etc.

That's what I'm saying. That's why I think they wouldn't do it.
