The whole point of the new talent trees are to give you more choice in how you develop your character. They don't want linear trees anymore.
Forcing things like spell upgrades down players' throats seems a bit contradictory to that goal to me.

I think this is the first time I've actually felt pessimistic about DA2. Great. Tch.
"Dear BioWare, please bring back the cute blonde or Mr. Too Much Coffee. Even fight like a Spartan, think like a wallaby is better than this!"
It doesn't make me pessimistic. BioWare's marketing has never impressed me, but their games always do.

I didn't expect to be this disappointed with DA2 but I'll still stick with it, the story is the real reason to play it anyway. -heavy sigh-

Bah, there's nine more reagents, three somatic components, and twelve verbal ones. ONE OF WHICH IS A LIMERICK.

You just made me fail my Concentration check. This summon will never get completed now.
And where's the Nug Cake? It's the most important reagent!

I was a bit worried about the companion armor eerily similar to Mass Effect 2 but kept faith. Now I am speechless, you aren't even trying to hide how much you're "borrowing" from Mass Effect. Mages' spells seem to be cut down hard, many spells being scrapped which successfully screws up the strategic parts of mages. I loved how every spell had a use and only a rare few seemed to be filler, sure I couldn't map them all on my controller but the radial freeze time menu was quick and fun to use. Don't get rid of spells to replace it with upgrades to "main" ones, the variety of the spells gave you control over the battlefield and felt unique. It was what made the mage experience a more tactical, at least more tactical than "making decisions that are best for your party".
I didn't expect to be this disappointed with DA2 but I'll still stick with it, the story is the real reason to play it anyway. -heavy sigh-
The whole 'upgrade' bit worries me too. I would prefer variety when it comes to skills and spells, not just a powered up version of the same thing. We got to evolve powers a grand total of one time in ME2. A real disappointment for me.

It was an interview for xboxachivements, it was never going to be something that would blow our minds. The quote about crossovers from DAO is very vague as well, I'm pretty sure he just didn't want to let anything slip so went with complete vagueness on the topic. Reading his whole response didn't leave me thinking it wasn't part of the game, just something they weren't ready to discuss in detail yet.
This forum is so excitable.

We'll, those examples are very different spells. They're used in pretty different ways, even if the effect is the same. Upgrades won't be that dramatic. They won't revemp the spell itself, but just increase things like radius, range, damage, and maybe some added effects.Ryzaki wrote...
Also...if you evolve the spell can you no longer use the weaker form? Because that in itself is kind of meh. I still used winter's grasp and paralyze long after I had gotten cone of cold and mass paralyze.

Nothing. it was bad and uninformative, like all the others. Certainly nothing to get excited about.

Yeah, I remember reading that interview earlier today and being left a bit confused by it. "We're not talking about what decisions carry over yet. I'm not even saying that they will." Given that it has been confirmed a LONG time ago that we will be able to import our end game saves from DA:O to DA2, this part is extremely confusing. If decisions don't carry over, then what the hell would be the point in importing our Origin characters?
It just doesn't make sense. Bioware has talked about which characters are planned to return. The only possible explanation would be that they are thinking of cutting features due to the deadline.

Until we know exactly what everything does, we can't really say there's a loss of variety. It's been my experience across many RPGs and MMOs that a system like what DA2 will likely be supports much more variety than a system like Origins.slimgrin wrote...

In Origins, you picked up the best 10 or so spells, and nothing else mattered. There wasn't any variety to begin with, at least no meaningful variety.

For me the only part I really had a problem with was the response about importing DA:O saves. Given that it was confirmed that we will be able to upload our Origins saves in the August issue of Gameinformer, what was the reason to say "I'm not even saying decisions will carry over"? There would be no other reason to import our saves other than to have some of our decisions carry over. That's what got to me.

The biggest challenge is making the best use of each of the peripherals,
so that in itself, going from a keyboard to a controller, you want to
have the same feel.
A keyboard is a USB peripheral. I guess 'push a key something awesome happens' just isn't catchy enough.
Maybe they just need to add more buttons to the console...Randall Bishop
...if you were a Mage, you had about thirty-six spells by the end of the game, but on the console, you didn't really have access to that.
But then who would have thought you'd need more than 640 K either... blame it on Microsoft.
Sounds more and more like it's being dumbed down for controllers.
