I don't get why people are making a big deal about this. I highly doubt the Product Manager is involved in anything but managing the payroll and making sure things get done.

I'm fairly sure there is no creative control or anything like that. So let's stop demonizing a guy for talking about his job.

You may very well be right.  I personally have no idea what he normally does.

But it begs the question - why is he giving this interview, then?  Image IPB

The dev that was supposed to be interviewed transferred the call as a practical joke.

setting the harping aside......lol

one interesting piece of info in the interview ( if true ), is that Bianca is Varric's "signature" weapon that he uses throughout the story. This seems similar to what Mike Laidlaw said in a recent podcast, when he said that while you can change companions' weapons, they will have a preferred style of weapon.

So, perhaps Isabella will prefer daggers, while Varric prefers Bianca, etc.

I wonder if this means that all companions will get "signature" weapons........

And, does Hawke get a signature weapon? Can you choose which weapon becomes Hawke's signature weapon?

I can see this as one way where if you designate a weapon to be a "signature" weapon, that weapon will level up as Hawke levels up. That would allow you to stick with a preferred/favorite weapon throughout the story. Much like it seems Varric will do with Bianca.........

Randall Bishop says -

"Well, obviously the controls are different between the PC and the console. The console version (of Origins) didn't work out quite the way we wanted it to, which is why we've made these changes to the controls and the combat. We want to move more into the action RPG realm, so it has a lot more of an intuitive feel for the console and it's something that console gamers will be a lot more used to."

And then they're surpised when PC v's console wars breakout.

This interview is a perfect example of why there are console v's pc wars, and so much panic on the forums!

After I read more about how DA:O played differently on the PC, I bought the PC version. Never tried DA:O again on the PS3. The controllers are great for shooters and I never had any complaint. By the same measure, sometimes trying to play the PC version of ME2 via the keyboard seems awkward because of the limited keyboard input. That seemed more like a bad port of the console version than what was originally available in ME 1. ME2's overuse of the SpaceBar is annoying and it can't be fully remapped to another key. ME1 you could tap J for Journal but can't do it in ME2 - have to hit Esc and select it there. Not well planned out for keyboard use.

Bingo.

It would seem they are "streamlining" the abilities and skills and spells with the consoles in mind, specifically so they can cram everything onto the controllers lessening the need to pause and go into your radial menu, so that you stay hackin' and slashin' in real time. Basically marginalizing the need for any tactical pause and play. Sure you can still technically play that way, but they're designing it to focus on being able to casually hack and slashin real time.

I mean, its one thing to say you're designing for all 3 platforms simultaneously, but its painfully obvious that they're primarily taking into account the limiting hardware and input factors of the consoles first and foremost and simply porting that version of the game over to the PC and making it simply functional with the PC GUI- but the high level design changes aren't being made to utilize the strengths of the PC, but rather the limitations of the consoles and thereby shackling the PC to the consoles.

If you worked for a gaming blog, and they wanted you to get an interview with someone from the DA2 team, a guy with a title-that-is-ambiguous-to-your-readers is golden. How many people actually know how games are made?

Very few in comparison to the amount of people that know how Honey Bunches of Oats are made.

I very much doubt it, I am told I have a rather dry sense of humour at times.

It would seem you are not alone either:

What do you mean 'never used?' I used all of them. I really liked it that I could build mages completely differently on each playthrough and experiment with using different spells and combinations, or emphasising different schools for different characters. Doesn't sound like there'll be much of that anymore.

Ah, well, if you used them all then clearly they were all useful.

I read it and thought, oh, that's horrible. My mind is in the gutter. I can't believe I thought that was what it meant.

Then I went back and reread it.

That is what it meant. <_<

Anyone else laugh at the picture right above the interviewer's "featuring the no-pants dance" question?  Whether he did it intentionally or not, I though it was appropriate.  ^_^

I have no idea what 'pressing buttons and something awesome happens' means. I expect it's similar to 'new and improved' or 'as seen on t.v.' etc. I can hardly wait  :P

I get the feeling that this product manager fellow has absolutely zero interest in Dragon Age, or video gaming in general, and couldn't even survive Ostagar if he had a couple of months to do it.

I'd sound like an imbecile if I had to give an interview on quantum physics or something, too. Some subjects are simply beyond the grasp of some people. They shouldn't even open their mouth when it comes to such matters.

Taking into account his job title, Occam's Razor suggests that this guy probably is not as expert as we are on what information has been released and what has not, so decided to err on the side of caution. You guys freak out really easily.

Is this the part where I start talking about those couple of moles I have that you'd find interesting? hehe

I don't see the spell upgrades as a nerf. In Origins you had spells that depended on your stats for power, and that was it. You couldn't make the radius of a fireball bigger or the duration of an inferno longer or increase their damage with means beyond upping your stats. Now you can do those things. If anything this is additive, making the mage more powerful at the cost of versatility, should the mage choose to take upgrades.

Now, if spells have been removed, that could be considered a nerf, but has that been confirmed?

Yes, it has.  I don't recall exactly where, but it was definitely said that there are less spells than there were in DA.

Well, they have said that there are fewer spells in DA2. We don't know which ones though. The whole "upgrade" thing is just copy/paste ME2 though no matter how you cut it- like your fireball, level up and you can have it do greater damage or bigger AOE!

Thats not bad necessarily- only if we end up having a handful of spells or abilities to actually use per character like ME2.

You mean us, the forum members? The ones that aren't paid? (I'm not saying the guy do his job bad or anything, but I would like to be paid for knowing more than people who receive money )
