What I'm saying is that to me, when a Bioware dev says "action RPG" - they're talking about aesthetics and presentation, nothing more. It strikes me as a marketing ploy to appeal to non-RPG fans who feel games like DA:O are too slow and stuffy for them by tacking the word action in front of it. DA:2, to me, isn't even remotely an action RPG. It's a traditional CRPG, it may not have all the same features as some devotees of the genre were hoping for, but it hasn't left the genre.

That's using my definition, though. My definition of an ARPG starts with twitch mechanics and DA:2 doesn't have them.

That really wouldn't surprise me at all, considering the deception they tried with DA:O.  That's what makes the lack of real video annoying because I kind of feel like as soon as I see some gameplay I'm going to go "oh, okay, can't wait."

I remember I wasn't paying much attention to Origins outside its marketing and was very meh about the game, then I saw the giantbomb quick look and was blown away.  OMG, a tactical RPG!  Why didn't they tell me?

My guess?  They presume most tactical RPG fans would already be aware of and following it.  At least to the point that Bioware imagines targeting their marketing in that direction would produce minimal benefit.  Action oriented marketing might annoy some fans, sure, but I don't imagine they expect to keep gameplay hidden forever - and then they'll have most tactical RPG fans who will know what they like when they see it and not before anyway.

Yeah, the way they deal with the tactical RPGs fans seems to be to get the devs to come on the forums and tell us to ignore the marketing

I think it's an old interview, reposted. He wouldn't call Lothering by name, like it was some big secret.

I don't get it. Or buy it.

But he mentions Isabela and that she's a romancable character. He mentions Varric as well. This is a new interview. It also mentions we've "seen" rogues and warriors.

God no, If Isabela is a romancable character, I fear to see the others... I mean come on! She looks like a gipsy!

You guys are hypersensitive. This interview was completely unremarkable.

Gypsy? Oh no! Isabela will steal your men, curse your crops, and she turns into a wolf by the light of the full moon.

I have to admit, I'm actually RELIEVED when I hear the devs talk about the battle system because I only have DA:O for console...aaaand the battle system is horrible there. I quiver in envy when I see gameplay videos from the PC version. You can't tell your characters where to move unless you manually control them in real time, and inevitably when I switch to Wynne to move her away from a stupidly close spot to the enemy, my PC does something stupid while I'm not controlling them. I've hit the point where I've turned the difficulty all the way down to the lowest setting so I can blast through the battles and get to the juicy plot bits, I'm pretty much playing for the character interaction and the great writing at this point.

I've gotten the impression from the interviews I've seen and read that they aren't actually changing the combat too heavily for the PC, they're just making it actually function well on consoles, which I am INCREDIBLY grateful for. I still want to see some gameplay videos for sure, but I haven't heard anything that makes me want to give up on the game yet (although I am admittedly primarily a console gamer who plays *Eastern* RPGs, so I know I come from a totally different background as most of you and understand your concerns).

Part of what makes me willing to wait is that I had a similar reaction when I heard about the changes to ME2's gameplay in comparison to the first game but when I actually played it I realized the combat worked much better (...on the consoles, of course, the PC version definitely doesn't sound nearly as good). Although, really, Mass Effect is a pretty different series (and at this point I still believe that--the comparisons to Mass Effect seem to be based on surface things like the dialogue wheel than anything having to do with actual gameplay).

Actually you just made Isabela sound kind of hot. I might buy DA 2 now. Image IPB

I don't know what the panic is about, but he said he wouldn't say which decisions carry over. He also said he won't comment on any of them carrying over as well, granted. But at least he didn't say that they won't. He just didn't seem to want to talk about it. I don't really know why, since the game should be in a state now that you can say that some will carry over (just like devs here did). I can't imagine they are still in a process of deciding whether or which do or not.

speaking for myself, I don't really think it's what he said in the interview that left me scratching my head. But more on how he said it.

Because, truthfully, there really isn't that much new revealed in the interview, aside from mentioning Isabella is a romanceable.

And that's just it. The way he was answering the questions and commenting, felt like that was an interview done 2 months ago, when they couldn't really reveal/or discuss too much specific.

maybe it was the venue/audience, maybe the guy was simply unprepared. But it just felt odd reading such an interview now, when more official info should be coming out. I mean, the game comes out in just a few months...........

I like to look on the bright side, it's a better sequel than KoTOR2. ;)

Tell your fortune, too. Make love potions. And remove that curse for gold.

Kotor 2 was better than Kotor 1 IMHO.

Gonna go out on a limb and say it's prolly the same reason they hide She-pard and LadyHawke.

KotOR2 is the pinnacle of sequels.  It expands on the original story without redering it invalide.  It introduces new characters and concepts without making it seem to take place in an entirely different multiverse.  KotOR2 actually makes the original game better, in some respects.  And, of course, KotOR2 took what was already there with KotOR1 and expanded, instead of say, running off into some game-play genre-altering tangest (BioWare, cough cough).

Plus, you know, the game itself was better than KotOR1.

Why do they keep regarding ME2 with Dragon Age?? I'd feel better if they said it's like The Old Republic lol

Because... that's a much fairer comparison? But hey. People are already comparing Dragon Age 2 to The Witcher 2, so go ahead.

All I got from that is that we will have fewer spells ( which are now upgradable ) to make the game easier to play on consoles. Instead of going from fireball to inferno we'll be going from fireball to improved fireball.

... Yay?

Oh, you managed to put the game toghether? See, I couldn't enjoy KoTOR2 because it came broken.

Seriously, for whatever praise you can give it re: what it tried to achieve, the actual result is 2/3rds of a buggy game that collapses as you near the ending. And for that, Obsidian has no excuse.

Yeah they do, Lucasarts forced them to release it before they were ready.  They even offered to make put up the missing content as free dlc, but for some reason couldn't.

I'm pretty sure gypsies are better known for trying to sell you pegs or lucky heather, offering to tell you your fortune, and "borrowing" your dog for an extended period of time.
