Butt that is quite the presumption. What basis do you have that more than half would be against it? And storyline comes before eye-candy and fan service, at least I would hope so.

I said more than half simply to mean the majority. My presumption came from popular male romantic leads in film and on television. And part of a love interest's appeal is eye candy and fan service. Look at Isabela.

The problem with using that as a way to tell what kind of romantic leads women like is that most writers for film and tv are male.

But writers generally don't do casting as far as I know. I'm talking about purely the physical appeal and presence of the actor here, not the way the character is written. The show True Blood for example has a very large female fanbase, partly because of the handsome male actors in the show.

And Varric is not attractive and appealing? Dwarves are not midgets in the Thedas, Varric has a vocal fanbase, an interesting appearance which is an eye-candy to many. I do not see any problems with him becoming a love interest than what odd and forceful standards some people have.

I would say that the playerbase interested in male romancees have different or even unknown tastes and preferences. With Varric, they could test it.The reception has been warm on the forums, seeing the two huge threads dedicated to chest hair goodness.

I don't find my standards "odd and forceful" just because they are different from some others'. I have as much right to say I don't find him appealing as you have to say you do. And I believe the developers have a better idea of how much of the fanbase would really be enthusiastic over this happening than a single thread with some very vocal people in a single forum.

I myself don't have a clear view beyond my subjective experience, same as you (unless you work in marketing for this type of thing). I am stating my opinion from my experience and from what I have seen in other forms of media.

I will never understand why so many women get weird about a guy being shorter than they are.

If I were a betting woman, I'd say so.

Just please, if it's an elf, make him tall and burly.  Please?  I dream of Concept Art Guy.  Where oh where are you, Concept Art Guy?!

Why are a lot of men weird about a woman taller than they are?

It's probably similar to  the reason why so many men get weird about a girl being taller than they are.

I don't really understand men who are attracted to women either.

Tho you're not just saying you don't find him appealing, you're saying the majority of people won't find him appealing, which is quite different.

Why dislike Varric being a love interest when it would be optional? I see it as "forceful", when people say "Don't put x in, because I dislike it" and especially when "Don't put it in because most people wouldn't like it". Do you know "most people"?

Based on my subjective experience, yes. I'm not the authority on women's preferences, but I don't think my opinion is without merit based on past video games, television, movies, advertising, etc.

The main reason I doubt Varric's LI candidacy is David Gaider's on-forum reaction to the idea:

Based my Mahariel on him. Concept Art Elf sold me into the Dalish, I'm afraid.

I am honestly weirdly not fussy about male LIs, I like all types. Enjoyed the Alistair and Zevran equally, crossing everything in the hope Varric is a LI... Pixels are pixels, I didn't find any of the characters "attractive" visually from DA:O. A combination of good writing and voice work did make fangirl, though.

I trust the writers to thoroughly crush our hearts regardless of whatever they do, they like that sort of thing.

I'm picturing my 5'5" straight male friend reading this thread, nodding knowingly, and pouring another shot of Jameson's.

/he's a cool dude, honestly

Okay...that's an elf that would be acceptable.

I hope they announce who he is soon. It might be a concept art for an important non-companion NPC, for all we know.

And I also hope, if he's an LI, that he's not the bisexual option. Dalish culture doesn't strike me as approving of same sex romance, what with all the need for procreation.

5'5" isn't terrible. That's a woman's average height. In America, at least. Not...erm...ideal, but it's not as...off-putting as dating someone who comes up to your chest.

That was concept for DAO--for the Dalish elf origin.

Well, Dalish disapproval might explain why he spends his time hanging out with a bunch of humans - something which certainly isn't approved of by Dalish culture.

The importance on procreation among the Dalish would also make it unlikely that a Dalish elf would get involved with a human.

That's right, you aren't. And a problem with video games, television, movies, and advertising is that they're often run by men who either ignore womens preferances entirely going for that white male demographic, or get things very wrong. Using things that are made primarily by men as a sign on what women like isn't the best way to go.

I personally like him, and like shorter guys. And considering the huge lovefest for him in his threads, I'm not alone in this opinion. Sure there are people that dislike him, but claiming the majority won't like him is rather silly.

If they get things so wrong, then why are they effective draws for a female audience I wonder. And why do romance novels written by women for women feature big hunky guys on the cover?

Really? Most females I know want a guy bigger and stronger than they are. Very few females I know are actually ga-ga at a smaller guy at first sight. They'll win them over with personality but not at first glance.

You know the whole sweep me off my feet and protect me type. Not saying shorter guys couldn't do it but it's better to hide behind someone with a nice broad back and taller than you than someone half your size

And the fact that we're females on a video game forum isn't helping the case of thinking like the average female.

I second this. There's a reason Garrus is a popular romance for ladies in Mass Effect 2, and I don't think it's his dashing good looks first and foremost.

When it comes to games, I find personality and voice work the most attractive thing about characters in a video game.
I'm not going to discount that looks factors into it, but it's never the first thing on my list. For instance, I really liked the romance with Ashley in Mass Effect because I found her a compelling character, not because of her looks.
