Seems like I'm not going to enjoy it expecting Dragon Age, but probably will thinking of it as Dragon Effect.

I'm only f***ing clever when I'm trying to sleep with you. Or Morrigan.

I thought there was still an approval system, but they just couldn't leave you.

There is an approval system, but it has been changed to give tangible rewards - in terms of content and attitude - to disapproval. The addition of the rivalry path is awesome in my mind.
I hope they remove the gifts. They were stupid. From what I understand though there are simply fewer of them - stuff like the mirror for Morrigan or the flower for Leliana, less of the silly "Oh, thank you so much!" stuff. But I'm less sure of that than I am of the above thing about approval/disapproval.
Yet another previewer gets it wrong.

Yeah I would actually prefer it a LOT more if there were some sort of consequences with pissing off your companions. I found in me2 they were largely no consequences for doing something your companions didn't like, and this aspect of DA:O gave the decisions a lot more impact.

We'll see. It sounds pretty lame to me, but maybe they'll do something interesting with it. Decisions like contaminating Andraste's ashes would really lack impact if Leliana were to simply say "I really don't like that you committed the greatest possible blasphemy against a religion that I live, breath, and revere, but I respect your role in our team and in the world so I will go along with it. You're kind of a dick, though."

this seems like an approval/rivalry bar to me (the blue/red balls with the skull in the middle)
Looks more like Paragon/Renegade meters to me.

david gaider or mike already said the companions won't always put up with your dickery, if they think you're going too far, they will abandon/attack you.

DA:2 doesn't have Paragon/Renegade. I want to say Mike Laidlaw confirmed that the Friend/Rival system is precisely what those blue and red icons were indicating on Isabela's page, but I don't have a link on hand.

Yes, because with a new system they would write that exact scenario.

Again, we'll see. They've stretched the truth quite a bit recently.

Fun? Maybe. Important? Are you kidding?

Not to me. It sounds more like Alpha Protocol. You would get different bonuses from your handler loving or hating you. It's not quite the same, though.

Damn, I was hoping they were mostly gone.

If I've understood the new system correct. The gifts are not gone, there's just fewer of them and all of them trigger conversations. There will be a friendship and a rivalry path, which both will function like the approval did sort of. In the former you advance through it by making choices they agree with and becoming friends with them, in the latter you earn their grudging respect while they try to convince you they're the ones that are correct. Both paths will unlock bonuses.
So it's like approval expanded. If I've understood the explanations correctly.
