What can I say. Companion and friend of many, many battles and did really was as a tank. I read a post in the spoilers forum (no spoilers here btw) about alistair and another individual later in the game and how whiny and undecisive Alistair was for people during the game.
I didn't have this problem as I had Shale for tankidge. Maxed him out with str and stam on each level. Send him in too big groups, taunt and pound the ground, gather up as many mobs as poss, then pick them off individually. I didn't have much AoE in the group, but, have started a mage playing through hard mode now, we'll see how tactics will differ.
My hero was a Berzerker/Champion Dwarf, Wynne healing and lilianna as Archer/Ranger, swapped out on occasion with morrigan...
The conversations and banter you have with Shale and those he has with your companions is just so funny, makes it a joy to listen to. When he starts addressing someone, I stop and listen. If you guys don't have him, hes a must
