This month’s challenge is “Field war hospital, the toll of war”.   Just what sorts of things would a hospital set up amid a bloody battlefield need? What do the soldiers look like that survived the battle?

Some specific suggestions from the original post include a sling or bandage on a player’s arm (Builder Anthony). Scars and wounds enough to fill a hospital with hurt NPCs (Estelindis).

Once again, the possibilities for content types are pretty much endless.
 Rules:
- It must be fully working in game
- Use of vanilla NWN or publicly available texture is fine, though state-of-the-art amateur's work would require 100% original work, but that's up to you.
- Teamwork is also welcome
- Beginners most welcome, don't be afraid, just try, you'll be surprised!

Unless someone else wants to handle packing and shipping this month’s goodies, given the holidays, the deadline for this challenge is going to run into January a bit.   Lets plan on a deadline of 9 AM EST on January 5th (which is a Monday).

Some things you could include in the download/email that would make packaging everything up easier and faster:
- 2da lines needed
- Screenshot for use on the vault page (this also gives me hints on how to display the new goodie)
- Portraits (if needed) of your new goodie
- Any credits you would like listed
- If this is your first entry, please tell me what name you would like your work listed under and provide a link to your other NWN content if you want that displayed as well (the link bit is totally optional).

Remember, the Challenge is all about fun, sharing, creativity and surprise!

If you have concerns/questions about December Challenge please post in this thread.

If you want to discuss the Monthly Custom Content Challenge idea as a whole or want to submit ideas/themes for future Monthly Challenges please post in its thread here.

If you have a technical question about some custom content creation, please create a separate thread so that the answers can be found later by anyone, not just people interested in this Challenge. We'll try to help!

Have no fear and join the fun!

And finally, you can vote for next month's theme at the following link:

*edited to add in the poll link*

Hmmmm. I've been pondering what to make this time around. My graphics skills are pretty limited. ;) Loadscreens don't really fit the theme. So I'll probably go with inventory icons again. Any ones y'all would like?

I'll probably be making a selection of medical tools as weaponry, such as hacksaws.

I will be making a range of anatomy parts with wounds, scars, and bandages - perhaps some torn clothing (just modified standard Bioware stuff; anything else is really too ambitious if I want to get lots of parts made). Some will range on squicky, in the case of a character who's really badly hurt. (Squicky by my squeamish standards, anyway.)

Looks like I may have time to participate this time around. :)

I'm going to try stretchers, both empty and 'loaded' versions. Stretchers with folding legs (sort of like a cot), and handles. Also thought about trying to make a wheeled stretcher, maybe as a tail, for an NPC to push around, with and without people on board.

Good luck everyone!

Sounds cool =)

I'll do some gory stuff, to balance Este's "squeamitude" (edited...).
Wondering, is there a need for like ointment pots and other kind of potery/boxes. Maybe some existing inventory icons could be done as placeables or item models too.

(nb: thanks to the invisible moderator =) )

Here's what I've come up with so far:

Posted Image

And here's a battlefield scene, where you can see I've done a tipped over stretcher too:

Those are actually the 'empty' stretchers, with some placeable bodies on them. I'm thinking of putting a few bodies already on them too, covered with sheets (bloody? ) maybe? :P

JFK

Looks good, JFK.

A few with bodies already on them would be good; the empty ones will still be there to allow builders to put whatever bodies they want on them.

I wonder...  Injured phenotype???    No no no - too much work for one month!

Nice stretchers. Might want to make them just a tad longer? Though I admit I'm nitpicking :D

Actually I seem to recall Tom_Banjo made such a thing a long time ago, without releasing it. Don't know where my copy got to, though, or if he's still got the files around.

Thanks Estelindis and _six. An injured phenotype would be very cool!I hope Tom_Banjo is still on the scene, and might release this.

On the length, I was planning on trying to scale these for the PC races, but after thinking it over I decided it'd look cooler to have a little halfling on a big stretcher, for some reason. I placed Aribeth on the stretcher (it was a more or less random choice, honestly), and it looked pretty decently sized. Of course, she's an elf. Maybe I better see with a half-orc what it looks like. :)

I don't know if this is too hair-brained or not, but I'd like to try making a stretcher like carryable by 'two' NPCs. Might look hokey, but if it was a tail, the front NPC could have it 'held' behind him, and the back NPC could be scripted to walk in the right place. Probably couldn't do this . . . whaddaya think?

I think im going to make a hot poker.I seen in a you tube video that you can make certain objects glow. But im not sure if nwn supports this feature.Id like for the end of the poker to glow red like its hot.

I have a key ready but i dont know how to export it in nwmax from 3dsmax11.

injured phenotype would rock! (Was just playing around with the Witcher again the other day) If the old DLA stuff hadn't died off, the Raistlin model had an idle animation of him stopping and coughing!

Even though it's more combat related than hospital related, perhaps an improvement to the blood vfx when a creature is damaged? (was playing Dragon Age too.. *Grumble*) a head bandage VFX? a persisting bleeding vfx? (to go with the mentioned injured pheno maybe?)

The two person stretcher sounds great!

You can make objects glow.  Just set the self illumination to something other than 0.0 0.0 0.0 (r g B).  All zeros means no illumination, while all ones (1.0 1.0 1.0) would mean fully glowing with a white light.  1.0 0.0 0.0 would be for glowing red-ish.  0.5 0.0 0.0 would be a dimmer red-ish glow.

If you only want the end to glow, make your model in two parts, with only the end part set to be self illuminated.  If your texture is dark colored (like steel), the glow will only really be noticeable in dim light or darkness.

Here's another shot of my progress. I think a few sheet-covered stretchers can get a lot across.

Posted Image

This one, with the sheet pulled over the head, says, "Hello, my name is Dead Guy.", I think. I'm probably going to make a few like this, with different footwear sticking out the bottom. Trouble is, what footwear? Maybe naked feet of each gender? Too many otherwise...

Criticisms and advice welcomed here. :)

Sorry to flood the thread - but can one of you gurus tell me how to get bodyparts I'm using to use their texture? I'm not using the PLT (unless there's some way to use it for placeables? THAT would be cool.), just cannibalized the parts, and left the references in them for what texture they use.
How does this work with body parts though, where one can customize the tint? Is there an easy way, or must I make new textures for them? I hope not, as my texturing 'skills' are questionable at best.

Here's a shot of the body parts as placeables:

Thanks for any advice in advance.

Well .plt textures will not work whatsoever on placeable objects, so your best solution would be to use textures from some of the non-dynamic NPC models - I'm thinking the prisoner or beggar models here, as their textures are separated by part in the same way dynamic models are.

Thanks _six. I was pretty sure I couldn't use the .plt method. However, now I'm daydreaming of making the stationary (ie 'placeable') loaded stretchers as a creature similar to the armor stands. Then, a builder could specify what feet and head parts they wanted to put on the stretcher. Think that'd work?

JFK

on second thought, that sounds like a lot of work... bleh. Gotta leave, but thanks for the advice. :)

Tail node might be better for that, imo.

Welcome back to the fun, JFK. You sure jumped in with both feet and took off running. =) I really like the stretchers. The fallen over one with the body and blood is neat combination of placeable use. The idea of being able to carry a stretcher between 2 NPCs is cool. Would you make the 1st NPC's tail contain both the stretcher and the 2nd NPC? Curious how you would keep 2 NPCs in "step"? I'm clueless when it comes to modeling so go ahead and giggle over my question if you like. ;)

Heya Jez *hugs* Placeables that players can actually pick up and turn into inventory icons are almost always a fun thing. I could see a nurse needing some special ointment that is only sold waaaaaaaay over there, and the player must go get her some urgently or her patient will die.

Anthony - Owie a hot poker to cauterize wounds? *sympathy wince already!*

Your questions are not silly -- in fact they are questions I'm grappling with myself! :)

Here's a shot of the stretcher as a VFX, set up in the toolset just to try it out:
Posted Image

Doesn't look too bad as a still, but it really isn't too good in game. The NPC swings his arms as he walks, and the stretcher bobs along behind him. Plus, I was unable to get the following NPC to stay the right distance from the leader. My scriptFu is weak. :)

Here's how it ends up looking, without the rear NPC:

Posted Image

My plans are in flux. I think the very best way to pull this off would be to make a new phenotype: The Carrying pheno would keep the arms locked in place, and maybe hunch the shoulders a bit, and strain the neck out a bit? Could have an animation of bending the knees to pick up the stretcher placeable (which then disappears at the same time as the VFX or tail is applied).

As for the rear carrier, well that is gonna be hard for me. I'm not that good at animation. Maybe with help I could add another 'medic' figure right to the end of the stretcher VFX? Unless someone knows a reliable way to script NPCs moving in sync?

Scripting it would be really unreliable if you were trying to achieve the right look - your best bet would be to just create a new "creature" that had the characters holding the stretcher already, then you could animate them separately. If you need help with this I'm more than happy to lend a hand - PM me!

Thanks, Rubies. I may do just that. You're right in that it's just too finicky to try to script them to walk exactly right together, so that leaves either animating it as a tail, or making it as a creature completely. I like the VFX because I don't have to mess with clothing, and a PC could use it, but I don't think it's going to work out.
Don't be surprised if I shoot you a PM after messing around with animation for a while! :)
