Wait wait, how can you say that one the one hand, the dialog system was not dumbed-down but on the other hand, you say that we now get paraphrases instead of real dialog? O_o?

Because paraphrase dosen't equal dumbed-down. I've seen games with seven responses in their dialogue but they only result in a total of three variations to the actual conversation. So BW removes the BS in conversation.

As for the graphics, a LOT of reviewers, gamers etc complained about the drab grapics of DA:O. In fact of all the complaints that is one of the first I ran into when looking up reviews on the game. So yeah, fans complained.

As to the interview, Mrs. Rabatich presented herself and DA 2 in an enthusiastic and profesional manner so kudos to her.

As to why she hasn't been used before, it's because Bioware was saving her for just this moment. BW knew that some of their "fans" wouldn't like the marketing. They knew they'd gripe, complain, *itch and more. Yet they also knew that some new potential customers would be intrigued by this marketing campaign. So how do they have their cake and eat it too....

BW Dev: "I've got it! We'll go with Marketings plan, and just at the point when some of our more vocal fans start gearing up for a full on hatefest we'll unleash Rabatich to quell their rage."

Dev 2: "Brilliant!"

Granted, she truly is an awesome choice and really made that interview interesting.

Bonus points for new info could not be given though :D

Yes.

Same thing applies to combat - improve (!=) reinvent.

Reinvent can equal improve.  Granted, they're not doing that.  Unless they went to twitch-based, skill-over-class system behind my back when I wasn't looking.

Maybe it's the DA2 shirt, but anyway, she looks and talks like a gamer, and her enthusiasm is refreshing when compared to... what was his name? Phrase Silverman? The one who looks and talks like a number crunsher that only cares about the sales.

Exactly.

A good example for an improved combat system would be Shield Bash.

In DA:O it was lame because the animation took so long that your enemy got a free hit and was already standing again when you ended the animation.

Improvement: you press the Shield Bash button and the character immediately turns around, runs towards the enemy, knocks him down, jumps on him and attacks a few times before getting off, ready for the next action.

That would be awesome.

Bad example: YYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY to frequently bash the enemy with the shield

or

YBAAY to pull of an amazing combo that results in a huge blood fountain with a lot of gore while Hawke decapitates 50 people at once.

None of those ridiculous PR lines for once, thank god. First proper Dragon Age 2 interview that I've seen, eventhough still no real gameplay footage.

That is exactly what happens in da2 IIRC

Tho I never get the 'I accidently hit on Zevran' thing. Zevrans flirt options were all so obvious. And he was very easy to dissuade. Am I the only one who thought he was the one they clearly went out of their way to not be able to accidently romance?

You're not the only one, but I've seen guys on the forum complaining that they managed to ninja romance him right up to the sex scene, so I guess anything is possible.

...How...how did they do that.  Did they keep sneezing while clicking, and because their eyes were watered up, they couldn't see what diologue options they were choosing.

I'm pretty sure your example of "Improvement" is actually what DA:2 does. The spam-able attacks on console are simple, basic attacks.

Granted, your example of a multi-step combo that results in a huge blood fountain of gore was awesome in Age of Conan - granted it wasn't that easy, well, not all the time. It wouldn't really fit in a party-based RPG because it would demand exclusive control of your player at the expense of the team.

Re Zevran: Maybe they imagined he couldn't possibly be into men - or something - and figured he was just joking.  I have no idea.

I was really hoping for some gameplay footage to match up with what she was talking about.

But even with the lack of that, great interview. Must not get too excited! Too much time until release to work myself into a froth.

Well, I can only judge from what I have seen / played right now.

From what I've played, the game will be terrible and could easily be Bioware's worst game. Pure hack n slay gameplay, weird dialog wheel, weird graphics (the ogre...man!).

From what I've seen / heard, it's a lot better but still...bad. Bioware states that they want to make an Action RPG (Diablo 2 / Jade Empire much?) and seriously, Jade Empire was terrible combat-wise...you basically jumped around like a flea dodging all attacks with ease.

Inventory system sucks in DA2 and it's officially confirmed and effectively dumbed-down. Want to customize yourc companion's outfit or make unusual character builds? Too bad. Anyone still remember multi-classing? Man, that was awesome. lol Imoen!

We will be forced to like Morrigan (oh gods, I absolutely hate that ****) and...

"Press a button something awesome will happen"

How can that go hand-in-hand with Dark Fantasy? I do not WANT that every time I press a button something awesome happens. That's what bothered me so much in the demo. All you did was HACKHACKHACK TORNADO SPIN HACKHACKHACK OVERHEADCHOP HACK HACK HACK BLOOD BLOOD BLOOD "Oh see an ogre, he will be tough!" "Arcane Prison!" HACK HACK HACK.

Meh.

They called Dragon Age: Origins an action RPG.  They also call Mass Effect 1-2 action RPGs.  I'm certain we can disregard their label of action RPG as meaningless marketing jargon.  Unless they actually show me where exactly they're drawing the line,   I'm going to treat the label as a phrase meant to convey a style of presentation and not some deviation in gameplay.

That's not a slight on Bioware, I just want my terms to mean something.

...

Really.

Okay, so basically, DA:O was a shooter.

I mean, you had a bow.

Some folks even said they called Baldur's Gate 2 that.  Take their word for it, I suppose.  Like I said, I really wouldn't read into that term too much.

To me, an action RPG must have twitch mechanics.  If it doesn't, it's not an action RPG.  But that's not Bioware's defintion.

Whoever called Baldur's Gate 2 an action RPG has no idea of video games...at all.

And yes. Action always means twitch mechanics. An action RPG would be Diablo 2 (and all its clones), the Gothic series, Vampire: The Masquerade etc.

Someone ask Bioware to hire someone with some knowledge of genre definitions ;)

Even if DA 2 is a bad game, it's still a Bioware game, which is better than most bad games put out by other companies. Most people don't care for a story driven RPG anymore with alot of player freedoms, so anything that entertains the masses for 20+ hours is usually "good enough" for the crowd. It's amazing how few people actually pay attention to story and play mechanics, just barely getting through a game by hammering countless square pegs through round holes, but...it happens all the time.

Hopefully DA 2 will be awesome. I'm still not pre-ordering it though as I have my doubts on a number of issues. So many questions have been raised that I want this game to be out a long time before I buy it. DA 2 (so far) feels like a game made for a generic action/fantasy market instead of a game made for Bioware fans. This isn't due to a feeling of "entitlement" which alot of Bioware fanboys quickly claim. Directors, Artists, Writers and yes, even game companies are all known for a style of story, look and/or play. I feel, presently, alot of this has been revamped or gutted in the new franchise. I hope to be proven wrong when I play DA 2. Regardless, I'm sure DA 2 will be a huge success because alot of the game playing market just wants a few monsters to bash for 20+ hours.

*raises hand*

The graphics in Dragon Age: Origins weren't terrible but I wouldn't call them great either. When I first started playing around with the toolset, I realized there were a large number of evironmental details the eye just glazes over, I suspect because of the muted, earthy coloring.

I also hated the heavy and massive armors. Having high gothic platemail does not convey the feeling of a 'rough' nation 'one bad day away from reverting to barbarism.'

I'd agree with that, but it seems to me that most of the gripes regarding the graphics come from the consoles. On the PC Origins wasn't that bad. From everything we've seen of DA2 though I'm not seeing how the graphics are technically any better- they look the same or in some cases worse.

I accidentally started a romance with Zevran. We agreed to have casual, no strings sex but a pair of gloves later, Leliana was yelling at me* and Zevran said I had led him on.

*Strangely, she didn't seem to mind me just sleeping with him.

The tag is vague and pointless because it isn't used with any consistent definition.

If latching on "action RPG" means more sales then I'm sure they couldn't care less about being correct.
