Why use the exact same color on what's essentially another region of the same feature (his face) if not to convey the same idea, that it's shadow in both places?

They do have a sort of Maori-vibe now that you mention it.. hm. Not sure that is facial hair, still think it's Nutella or dirt on his cheek.
Of course! Why didn't I think of that? Nutella... tis the most powerful substance in all of Thedas!
@hagspawn - I agree. Also, even though they are not tattoos, I think the glowing swirls contribute to the vibe
You know what would be great? Not that I don't appreciate the writers or anything, but I really wish some of the BioWare concept artists would participate in these sort of discussions and explain what they were trying to convey, and what inspired them to convey it in such a manner...

It's totally a shadow. The shadowed bit on his forehead gives a good reference as to the angle of the lighting, as the shadow there is the same shape as his hair. Also, I'm no artist, but it appears he or she used the same darker tan color on his forehead as they did on their cheek, and - again, I'm really no artist - if I was going to be drawing facial hair I'd try to make it more distinct in some way, even if it was just stubble.

Damn, they need you in the Australian yowie forums to de bunk all their hairy tree bush photos
I'm not sure what they are talking about but I'm looking at the dirty marks not the shadows lol though the nose part yeah, shadow

Anyway, when I saw MEG's tattoo, somehow that image immediately pop up into my head.
EDIT, @java, they might be watching. Eye of Sauron always watching.

A man's facial hair (see my avatar, though Rayin's unkempt hair kind of hides what I'm talking about) tapers up towards his ears, you know where sideburns would be if he was mostly clean shaven. If that is facial hair on MEG, it's covering half his cheek up to his temple.
There's a diagonal line there on the left which I think just means he's got something of a gaunt face, and the angles on the right side support this. If I had to guess, I'd say the artist used the lighting the way they did in order to give him a rougher, more masculine appearance, to contrast it with a "typical elf."
... I haven't followed the discussion too closely so I'm not sure if any of this is even a "new" take, fwiw...

This is a really far out and unlikely the be well-received idea, but what if he's a sort of evolution of the Harvester? It struck me that his skin runes are kind of like golem runes.
Or maybe he's just a Tevinter assassin or something.
Good suggestion, but the pointy ears and the hair make me think he is definitely an Elf.

Well, Tevinter elf assassin, I mean. Since he isn't a Dalish or a mage, I figure he's someone who works with mages, to get runes like those on his skin.

Maybe.. Shayle was unable to go back to her dwarven body but they were able to turn her into a male elf instead.. you know what, scratch that idea.
Is it weird that I'd find this incredibly awesome? (Mostly for the lulz)
